I would build one of these over a CMU retaining wall any day. CMU retaining walls are extremely expensive to build due to the need for a huge concrete footin, CMU's are maybe more durable than this, but there are so many variables and skills needed in CMU construction that it makes these look very appealing.
These walls will certainly last, and are very good, but also very expensive. I had 3 different contractors quote me for a 50 foot Allen Block wall. The lowest bid was $8,000. They all said the same thing, that since Allen Block was so heavy, it costs a fortune to deliver that many blocks. Any idea if shipping costs will ever go down?
To build a quality wall, use a clean, granular rock underneath the base course to create a firm foundation for your project.
Good drainage and compaction will add to the quality and performance of your finished wall.
We refer to the material used for the base, within and behind the block as "Wall Rock". Crushed or smooth stone, well graded, compactable, ranging in size from 0.25 in. to 1.5 in. (6 to 38 mm) is ideal. Your AB Dealer will have what you need.
Is very excited by this. All is tip top except that tamping hammer. That is a real buzz kill to me. I use a rubber mallett. But hey, I know I need me head examined.
