Loved the post, but you left out tsome "Heavy Hitters"!! Where's Phyllis Hyman, Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin & Laylah Hathoway???? And I love the Clark sisters, but I don't think that what they're doing is actually scatting, it's more of a "one-note" scatt and holler!! To put that up against the likes of Ella,Sarah, Natilie & Chaka is kind of insulting to these legends. I look forward to part 2!
Thank u so much for this extraordinary artistry,im flabbergasted lol.And my fave was in there too...wow(to find out my fave just look @my channel name). Also thanks for having the great Ledisi in the mix.Im a singer that wishes i could scat.
I agree with jazzbrats, I love Patti, she's always silky smooth, Sarah handles scat with assurance and I enjoyed watching Betty fly without a net. But for my money, Ella invented scat as we know it and while this video might not show it, there simply is no one better. Thanks for Part I, now I'll watch Part II.
how awesome would it be if past and present legacies could grace us all at once on stage. but this video can give us and idea of what that would be like great job TheCmeljazzman!
Patti Austin has such a silky smooth voice, and she always integrates her scatting into the song, often diverting into another song. Very cool. Betty Carter is probably the most daring, and then I'd say Sarah Vaughan has a very natural ability.
natalie already known as the best scat singer of her generation has even improved in the last six months to further set herself apart from todays artist.
notice most singers here are going w/the flow of the band and the band is playing towards them, but Betty Carter @ 6:13 is pushing the band to where she wants them to go. Genius!
@neofunkyman1 Yeah I knew Natalie had to be able to scat given who her father ws but I never heard her or Ledisi, everyone else I had and she brought it.
It's interesting to see some different styles. I think some people in this video are just scatting to show off voice, but you can see some of them really feeling it in the song. Really loved Natalie! You got Aretha in part 2?
@TheCmeljazzman She does it in her Canada 1978 concert on "A Brand New Me" a bit, (and from that same concert on "Anything Goes" and if you check out the account of Emeless. He has the fantastic "Mumbles" studio version from the 70s that is killer.
You need to hear Natalie's live scatting on Let There Be Love....she and the trumpet go note for note.

What? You put Fergie and Chaka Khan on here, and left out Anita O'Day?
And if we're going to talk Male vocalists, you can't leave out Leo Watson.
