  • we played this song last year with about 4 other bands at a winter concert. it sounded amazing. i have lots of good memories connected with this song. i still listen to it occassionally because it makes me happy

  • I absolutely adore this piece, however, my oboe playing is rather soft, and it drives me crazy when I listen to such a gorgeous oboe recording and I can't possibly play as loud as the 2-3 oboe players they have here. I need an oboe friend in band. :(

  • We play this piece this year in band. Its still rough, coming together though. I play brake drum around 1: 28 and hi-hat somewhere around 1:58 also. Gotta love this piece, can't wait until it really starts sounding good:)

  • we played added this song to our concert very last moment. it was really easy, but alot of fun to play. my sisters college band played Ghost Train by Eric Whitacre at their concert just a while later. now that i think about it, the Great Locomotive Chase is kind of like a little brother/sister version of Ghost Train. i love both songs

  • Omg snare drum :DDD

  • we just got this music in band class today! when we played it, we failed.... but it'll get better :D

  • I have the solo at 0:30 :D lol its not much but hey....low brass finally gets a solo so im happy XD

  • @GothicGirl967 I had that solo 2 years ago! :D

  • @BARITRUMPET2009 Haha nice! brass love <3

  • @GothicGirl967 Heck ya, especially low brass!

  • This was one of my favorite songs in concert band. I played the timpani roll in the beginning and the triangle because, um...the pedal on the tubular bells was broken. It kind of sounded like a railroad crossing bell, in a lame sort of way. I liked imagining this song as being part of a dramatic runaway train scene in a movie rather than being inspired by a Union raid in the Civil War. I hope that doesn't sound shallow, but that's what went through my head back then.

  • i can listen to this while playing temple run

  • This piece is EPIC. ^_~

  • Sounds like the music that plays when you have 5 minutes to escape the ancient temple

  • Trombone solo FTW!!!

  • @DancinGranny55 also bari sax and baritone solo not really a solo if u think of it

  • @DancinGranny55 It was a baritone solo i believe

  • @NCHaker He's talking about measure 111 where Trombones do a solo. But nice try. (And it was a EUPHONIUM solo by the way. a Baritone is the marching band equivalent of a Euphonium which is used for concert pieces.

  • @MrKuso101 they have concert baritones. They have less piping and 111 says nothing about a solo. its just such a weird part it sticks out

  • @DancinGranny55 you mean the french horn solo?

  • @DancinGranny55 It's actually a baritone solo XD

  • @DancinGranny55 its actually a french horn, i played the solo for my school last year, :)

  • @mellaphonforevar143 GO HORNS!

  • @DancinGranny55 Is it trombone or euphonium? It sounds like it could be either... wait I found it... Nevermind

  • Played this my freshman year (1st horn YES) lol

had no second though cause my horn broke right before we went on and she refused to play the solos so we switched

  • 29 people got hit by a train

  • just played this last night

  • Love this piece -3

  • I played this song last year in band. I did the French horn solos, and this song was so much fun to play!

  • @glerk12361 lol rly?

  • I remember when I played this in Middle School. I played the euphonium, the trombones barely played and no other low brass. I had, like, 50 solos.

  • omg i'm playing the solo when there is silence

  • about to play this in all county band

  • I'm so jealous... He made the 8th graders play this when I was in 6th...

I wish I would've gotten to play this song... :(

  • I played trumpet on this song in our community band! This piece gets a 5/5, thats for sure!

  • When we played this at school the melody played by clarinets in the middle was given to me and some ither dude as a duel solo

  • Trombone FTW. And Tuba part is awesome. Same part as timpani and Base Drum

  • @TheQuilanvos Trombones are horrible

  • Euphonium/ baritone FTW!

  • haha oh middle school memories

  • Baritone Be tha Shit

  • i'm playing this for middle school honor's band, wow

  • I'm the one of the only two Euphonium's in my Honor Band, and its so awesome when we have our solo in measure 13-14!

  • yup..im playing the warning bell....band geeks beware!

  • French Horn FTW!!!

  • @TheCornsnap yeeaa buddy

  • @TheCornsnap this was SO hard

    thats what she said...

  • @MSquaredCubed lol

  • the witch and the saint are my two favorite songs so far. band rocks!

  • I played this in high school, awesome clarinet part!

  • @dleduddet i played this like 3-4 days ago 9th grade mnjh symphonic band epic! XD i was on the marimba

  • did this come out before into the storm? if it didn't, then smith pretty much repeated the flute part in the first fast part of Into the Storm with the clarinets at in this song at 1:02. it's just a difference of two sixteenth notes

  • Clarinets!

  • I play the flute, and we're playing this in band. We sound more like a train wreck than a chase right now, but I'm sure it'll get better with time! Good vid! :)

  • 0:50 wtf?

  • We played this at festivals of music in boston, and got first place :)

  • playing this right now in band. just got the piece. We still need some work, but I think it will be awesome when perfected!!!

  • I just got back from my Fall Concert and we kicked butt!! XD This was our last song that we played, and all of the concert and honor people were like, "OMG I loved your last song!!! And I thought our songs were good...". :D I play bassoon in Symphonic Band btw~ 1st chair~ XD LOVE MUSIC AND BAND! BAND GEEKS UNITE!!! Love this song too~ :3

  • Lol I've played a lot of songs by Robert Smith, I really like this guy. I noticed there was a similar rhythm in this song and Into the Storm by the same guy. They both use the really the first five notes of the minor scale in a similar pattern.

Anyways, this guy is my second favorite musician named Robert Smith ever.

  • This song is so beast to play in band. Gets the heart pumping.

Played it in 8th grade, I played the flute :3.

  • Favorite RWS song! I played this for three years on euphonium, had the solos one year :)

  • Timpani!!!!!!

  • i played this in 07 08 to bass clarinet RULES!!!!!!!

  • I remember when I played this in band.... it was so epic

  • man them snares and them chimes be where its at

  • we played this in my 7&8 band. we played it better than the highschool band I heard play.

  • I played this in seventh grade. SO. MUCH. FUN. Listening to it makes me miss the eighth graders from last year.

Not to brag but, I played the horn solos,

    And I was pretty darn good at it (;

  • go flutes.

  • @TradingFeline Where flutes go, treble follows!

  • OMG!!! My highschool played this last year! so incredible!

  • This song on Tuba... WHO'S INSANE IDEA WAS THAT?!

This on trombone is fun though,

  • TENOR SAX!!!!! FFFFTTTWWWWW!!!!!

  • SAXES!!!!!!

  • i remember this as the best song our band played back in 8th grade

the audiences reaction at the end was great, we were awesome back then

    now we are sub-par marchers

  • I remember playing this freshman year two years ago it was awesome. I loved playing the french horn solo. French horn's the best and I love the random note thing it's so fun playing the worst note possible.

  • this song is just so amazing :D.. i played it when i was in 8th grade and i won't ever forget it :D

  • The only part I didn't like was that the tubas didn't get to participate in the random note, we ha to play a boring F. Or the bass clarinet cues. But other than that... Amazing piece.

  • playing this song in a music workshop. im doing the clarinet solo!

  • This is a full blown song, one that compleatly wipes you of all emotion except stunned. I am inspired every day with this song, and it is something that keeps me going each day, gives me the strength to meet each day with a smile, no matter how hard it may be.

  • We are playing this song in band right now :D

  • how can someone dislike this song?!

  • I love how much oboe is in this song. :D ♥♥

  • Thumbs up if you played the chimes and were forced to play out of time for once.
