Reply to various: Baylor Uni DO NOT make bears drink real Dr Pepper, it would kill them faster than their "Bear Budget" could replace them, no matter if they claim they do. Animals DO exist to entertain us, by simply being their natural selves, and while many bear trainers do sometimes have a very loving relaitionship with their animals, the VAST majority simply make the bear perform by driving it insane, thru violence and confusion. So: Bears good, Training them BAD.
This is a historic early movie but I have come to realize that there really is no humane way to make wild animals do stupid tricks. These bears probably had rings in their noses attached to the leash which was a very cruel way to make the bear comply. They were probably declawed too. When they were not performing they were probably kept in small cages with not even room to move around. But that is how we keep farm animals now so we have kind of gone backwards....
I love the way it offends modern hyper-sensitivity--that was when people had the proper perspective toward animals, that they exist to entertain us. At Baylor University they have real bears as mascots and they train them to drink Dr Pepper from a bottle at half time.
I think that perspective and belief is discusting. animals most certainly do NOT exist to entertain us aspecialy in that manner. The use of real bears as mascots and making them drink Dr. Pepper is dangerous and I'm surprised the drink company condones and allows such promotional acts.
It is sad that people still think the way you do towards animals.
I did not enjoy this at all. Did anyone else feel the urge to call the ASPCA? Did that one guy kick the bear in the beginning of the video?! Absolutely horrified.
@ploxsicle Edison was a beautiful man, appearance wise, feelings, and kind. You sir are a tesla testicle sucking moron, who loves PETA who is an organization of hippies who eat meat and are hypocrites towards poor animals.
Voorster.I'm quite sorry for you,yu know.Never judge a man out of his time. You are so glad etc.How do you know how people in two hundred years will judge us?Or do you consider us to be the apotheosis of human development, after which nothing better will come? And I am sure that you are a superlatively good, moral, upright, generous, altruistic person.Come off it!Give it a rest love!Do not denounce the past,it is unchangeable.
The bear with the rope around it's head was Boo Boo The Bear's father. The man holding the rope is now a foot rug in Boo Boo's den. Poetic justice. Thanks for posting this early acoustic recording.
that is terrible and horrific. I would like to take a large stick and beat the "animal trainers" and force them out of fear to do cruel and unusual tricks for a good laugh. See how they like it. I am so glad I don't live in that era. Those people should of been punished.
@handtlh1200 Peta = moronic hippies who don't give jack shit for animals. I'm glad that the victorian era had high morality, decency and no stupid hippies
Seems the bears' union lost its collective bargaining rights...

This would have been a much more enjoyable clip if the bears had arranged a "pre-production" meeting, then savaged the humans,

Yeah. Good idea. Call the ASPCA and tell 'em some guy kicked a bear in a movie in 1899. I'm sure they'll get right on that.

We might as well call the ASPCA on Edison for the 1894 boxing cats film, while we're at it. We'll hit Ol' Edison right where he lives!

It wasn't that horrific... A lot worse things happen today. Think Michael Vick.
What is cool is to see a film of 1899 by Edison.
