Hi Eddie. Interesting to hear of your interest in Christy Mathewson. When I was 15 I became friends with Joe wood the great Red Sox pitcher. I was 15 and he was 89. It was quite a thrill for me and still is to to this day. I was friends with him until he died.
I read where Mathewson played some ball in Taunton ,MA, not too far from where I live.
@fr6313 Yes, he played in Taunton but the team folded financially so he (and the other players) was not paid what was due him per his contract. It almost caused him to give up the game professionally.
Yes, it's true! In Cincinnati they used to make mock of his "BIG SIX" nickname and yell out, "You're a BIG SIS!" Of course, none of this bothered Mathewson and he just laughed and mowed them down. Thanks for the comment. If you have any questions about Christy Mathewson that you want answered I would be happy to talk with you about him.
Yes --- there was a time that I toyed with the notion of using the "high" voice as Mathewson and talked with those who remembered him from their childhood. They could only describe his voice and couldn't imitate it as they remembered him visiting Factoryville when they were very young and, alas, both who actually DID REMEMBER him as children have passed.
Unless Mr. Edison somehow recorded his voice or an old radio reel shows up, this probably is the closest I'll ever get to hearing what Christy Mathewson sounded like.
I did read in a couple of books that the real Mathewson had a bit of a high-pitch twang to his voice. Opposing players would refer to Christy as "Sissy Boy" because of it.

If you could put Christy Matthewson in a list of greatest pitchers... Where would he be placed in ur opinion Eddie91322?
coltrms 2 years ago
@coltrms Top of the list overall. I would put Walter Johnson number two close behind.

But I still hope there's a recording out there.
