I really don't care for this movie, but as I am a fan of horror and thriller, I am going to give kudos to this particular scene. This scene is genius... I just love how it took me off-guard completely! xD
For me, the point of this scene in the film was to show the viewers that he's scarred. Although not physically, inside, a part of him is bleeding. As he reveals later, he's seen things that no child ever should. Looking at his life, at first all you see is some seriously weird guy but in his dream, as he opens his eyes, the viewers too open their eyes in the sense that they can see inside him and see a child who has been wounded irreversibly and is the cause of all his actions.
@newdawnfades96 I like your explanation of this scene. Really does add a certain clarity to it. Plus there is an additional fact to be added to your analysis - that it is said that the eye is a window to the soul and in this case Sy's soul is bleeding.
@Pinhead554 Well, Sy is a very lonely guy. That's why he attaches to the Yorkins so easily. After he looks at the last photos turned in by Mr. Yorkins and sees that he is cheating on his wife with another lady...Sy gets angry. He steals a knife from the display in the store (not sure why a photo guy has a key to that? lol) and goes to the hotel Mr. Yorkins and his mistress are staying. Makes them pose nude and act like they're doing sexual stuff. Sy was abused by his dad when he was little.
@Pinhead554 Sy's father took pictures of him in the same way that Sy made Mr. Yorkins and his mistress. So Sy has some psychological problems and this scene, I think, depicts his conscience crying about all of this overwhelming stuff. You can see the red color...he's a photo guy. It's red ink tears. Dark Magenta tears, I guess? It kind of shows his love for his job + his crazy childhood + his love for the Yorkins' family. All combined to form a nighmare.
@Pinhead554 i'm not sure if this scene takes place before or after he finds out about the affair (haven't seen it in a while), but if it's after, I would assume the scene represents how you feel when you see something (ie: with your eyes) that you can't erase/forget..some thing thats so disturbing and distressing that your eyes metaphorically bleed from it.
seeing this scene again after years its not scary at all. but i was like 8 when i saw this the first time and i was traumatized beyond belief. since then ive always dreaded seeing this movie again, but now that ive confronted my demons i will watch it again

Because of this scene i have a fear of eyes. Can look at people normally when i talk to em but if they open their eyes wide it makes me feel sick. HATE this scene, good film in general though
@SuperHeroMania Its to do with the fact he's spying on these people, its like he shouldnt be looking at what they're doing so he has this nightmare about his eyes bleeding.
Well, this scene happens right after he see's the pictures of the husband's affair. He's followed the entire life of this family. What he's seen is, for him, life shattering.
@BBeAtZ91 I was about... 12? I don't know if you really consider that young, but back then it still made me jump quit a bit. Still gives me a little bit of a chill. I loved the movie though, still do.
ah i remember first time i watched this, really made me jump out of my skin!
the way i saw this is that the blood coming out of his eyes is symbolic of something he witnessed at a young age that he wasn't meant to see and its scarred him. i think thats pretty in keeping with the rest of the film.
I work in a one hour photo lab now and it sucks ass. I have worked in two so far, Walmart and Walgreens. Not by choose but bc I was desperate. If I had to work in a photo lab for 20 years I would go nuts too. As far as being a bad job, it's almost as bad as being a waitress or telemarketer (in my opinion). At least at those two jobs you get either tips or commission to deal with all the bull shit. Photo lab, you just get your shitty hourly pay. I can't stand professional photographer customers.
I can see Robin's character is quite lonely and sheds tears of blood. I think it is a symbol of punishment through the subconscious mind seeing these photos and being attached to this family that it was a sin from god to have this nightmare.
SO poignant and meaningful to the film. Watched this (Again) last night. Love this scene. Bare shelves representing his loneliness and emptiness inside, his vision, which he uses through photo development as a way to escape but in some ways come to terms with his past, robbed from him leaving him more vulnerable to his past than ever before. This is such a good delve into abnormal psychology. Amazing film. Watch it now if you haven't already!
I remember watching this film for the first time on our VHS player. Me and my dad jumped out of our couches laughing! and at the same time screaming! lol This scene is one of the main reasons why I have nightmares of Robin williams at night! XD
