Not a good recording. Sound goes flat/level drops off, when PJ faces away from the microphone. Microphone clips on louder notes ruining sound quality. I'm sure it would have been nicer live!
while the voice is nice, I cannot stand the "windshield wiper" movements of constantly changing the point of view for the audience. I have never seen him sing standing still -- and would like to !
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Umm.. can anyone else see the windshield wiper effect going on here>? He needs to focus a little more. I don't care for this version nearly as much as Daniels, who has the maturity of the voice and emotion to pull it off more...
I don't think I would comment if I were you -- until you learn how to spell. AND... if everyone in music had the same opinions, it would all get a little boring and predictable, now wouldn't it ? Get over yourself -- it's "absolute snobbery" to go around telling others on here that their opinions are not allowed.
this may be belated, but take it from an arts student.... artistic expression is often compared against certain standards and we are all quite competitive in this world.
just saying. i'm not snobbish or "annal," per se. i can just see room for improvement
this is finest performance of this aria i have ever heard...it eclipses Scholl..and even Daniels..the innocence...the longing...the loss all right there.....it is amazing...
I think the direction is the heartbeat of the performance, it has pathos - keep in mind this is not a professional recording with unequally distributed sound and it's a live performance!
He is a high countertenor...im a high countertenor too ,i vocalize till fa7(queen of the night)im 22 years old but my pass is between the si5 and the do6 (the countertenor pass) the sopranista pass is in Fa6 so even i have the high soprani notes i can't call myself a sopranista and i think Philippe Jaroussky is the same situation
Not only was this piece written origionally to be sung by a male anyways but Jaroussky (who in my opinion is a sopranista not a true counter tenor) does a marvelous job and is stylistically sensitive to the demands of baroque music. The Baroque was never about how big the sound was because the majority of it was written to be performed in a chamber setting with a small ensemble. His voice is just the right size in my opinion.
desde que descubri a philippe y spinosi no hago otra cosa que pasarle el dato a otra gente-de 15 a 70 años-hombresy mujeres, heteros y gays y todos, TODOS se quedan mudos de admiracion y emocion cuando escuchana Philippe.
@TrebleB4Mi Well what is the diffrence betwhen a counter and a sopranaista? Does he not use his falsetto voice? Indeed he has a much lighter voice then David Daniels for example.
@hotvampangel Of course he is a counter. In a interview he demonstrated his falsetto and his baritone voice. Was quite interesting to see and listen to!
@hotvampangel A sopranist are also know as "natural castratos" like Radu Marian för instence. A countertenor is a male singer in falsetto. Did you go threw puberty? If not, then you are a sopranista or a "natural castrato"
@hotvampangel I mean about the voice-change. Every boy has a soprano-voice. In puberty it changes, but a sopranist live Radu Marian did'nt change and kept their soparano-voice. Listen to his recorinds on Yotube. He has an impressive voice!
the argument by AkArtAk and Voixj are very valid, both perspective are correct, In my very naive perspective, I would say it is a matter of whether you like it or not. Despite the massive merchandising process on PHJ. I think he is new breed of countertenor,,, give him time, I bet that in a couple of year, when he finds his real voice and does not have to comply with the requirements of marketing, you will hear great performance
great musician, but is someone hearing his voice is not made for that??? Not enought harmonic range: sounds too little, without depth, one unique color from beginnig to end....
Maybe try to work upper passage and sing your thrue voice as sopranist, philippe
Hey AkArtAk, I understand what you mean, but that means at the same time that every soprano who uses her (or his) head voice should change to be more natural ? The voice, normally, is not made to sing ! This guy manage this voice very well. Regularity, nuances, pure voice... Sounds too little ? You cannot do better, if you stay in these little distances of sound. It's a shame you advice to sing his true voice because it's the only voice a man can explore with depth and passion.
No shame to say that. The worse singer is abble to hear what I said: he sings alto stuffs, but he is SOPRANIST !!! What's the problem you'll ask??? The problem is that the sound he can produce is not enough deep, dark, wide: in a word, his harmonic range is too tiny. It's like a sopran coloratur singing role like Carmen: she will have the notes, but not the sound the drama needs...
I'm not the one telling that: all professionnal singers agree around that: Jaroussky is graeat musician, but sopranist, not alto. So would he give us the best of his voice in soprano scores...
anyway, you have the right to like this version, but try to compare with true mezzo or alto singing this aria (maybe Daniels for exemple) and, to the end, it's both a shame and a bless to you if your lader of value is so low: you must like everything you hear without judiciousness.....
Without judiciouness... too easy. This idea confirms the fact : apparently the criticism makes people as low as they want to appear intellectual and expert... I've no leader of value, but i conceive that the one who is ridiculous is the one who try to feel superior despite of accepting his appreciation for a real talent and a voice full of values, alto or sopranist
I am disappointed you cant understand my purpose, same way you cant hear...
I do like Jaroussky, and of course, i think he is a great musician. My comment was not about his artistry: i just wondered if haendel cara sposa is legitimate to his voice and tried to determinate why not to my opinion... anyway, your impermeability to technical argument tie down you capacity of hearing/understanding, so...

His voice is fine for this rep on the grounds that he sounds amazing singing it ;).
Too many people get hung up on whether a voice is 'right' for a piece simply because a certain kind of voice has primarily performed it in the past.
He sounds gorgeous on it, so I personally feel that he has all of the harmonics and depth of sound that he requires to sing it :).
I am not trying to say you're wrong, because music is such a matter of opinion anyways. But I personally feel he's just right for it.
