Why is the vent mount so deep/large?

Does this allow you to mount onto a horizontal dash, as the video implies (at the beginning and end), or is it only meant for windshield and vent mounting?

From Kensington, it has a vent mount and a suction cup [windshield] mount, so anywhere that you can securly mount the suction cup it will work. You would have to test it in your car to see if it works for you on your dash surface.

1) Clean surface of windshield prior to application. 2) Run the round plastic end under hot water for 15 seconds and dry off before applying. 3) Exhale on the plastic end to warm it up prior to application.

Reply from Kensington: No the mount doesnt cover the microphone. Theres a hole in the bottom that allows the iPhone microphone to work like it would normally.
