Wild. There's a very good chance that where you say "reporters" at the start of the video, that's me and my buddy. He was working for the Halton Hills Herald at the time, and he borrowed the lens from my SLR to shoot the derailment. Locked us out of his car. We had to phone his brother to come pick us up. :) That was some night.
I know that the derailment in 1979 occurred at Mavis Road between Burnhamthorpe and Dundas. There's a marker on the railway overpass bridge commemorating the event
Sure in hindsight, it was "dumb" to crawl under two derailed cars but you'd be surprised at the "dumb" things that I've had to do to follow a story as part of my own research.
You clearly thought that there was little risk. Turns out you were right. AND. You got a neat story to tell your grandkids.
I was there as a radio reporter. I remember being one of the first on scene and having to crawl under and between two derailed cars...that was dumb I know, but I had to get to the other side of the crossing.
heat began to build up in an improperly-lubricated journal bearing on one of the wheels, resulting in the condition known among train workers as a hot box. Residents living beside the tracks reported smoke and sparks coming from the car, The friction eventually burned through the axle and bearing, and as the train was passing the level crossing, one axle and pair of wheels fell completely off.Procor was found at fault!
I was just wondering if the wheel sets on freight car trucks are loose. I ask because when I see an accident like this one, I usually see the wheelsets off the trucks.
Sorry, I don't know anything about wheel sets although "crazyman50001" (see above) offered comment about a fractured wheel. Every once in a while someone from the Mississauga Fire Department stumbles onto this video and comments. So maybe some Missy Firefighter who was there in January 1990 might be able to oblige.
I remember 1979. I was in bed when the first wreck happend and was asked to leave at 8:00 am. My friends on Parkerhill dr. Were evacuated that same night shortly after it happend.
Hi there Tom8201, Actually depends on when you saw it. Like I first saw it at night and wondered what all the fuss was about. Then in the morning, oh yeah, there were derailed cars all right. Zero hint at night though.
Hi there jeebz77. I remember the one from 79 as well. The shock from the blast cracked our window when we were living at Paisley Road at the time. Our Missy Emergency Services was some kind of wonderful. Did at great job at the 1990 one as well.
Ummmm *huge blush*... "he same crew from 79" are you talking about the train crew or the Mississauga clean up crew.
Yeah, I know it sounds like a stupid question but there is a stupider one. It'd be if I didn't ask it at all.
I took the tour on Mississauga Public Works "Family Day" and the tour guide showed us exactly where the '79 train derailed. I was completely surprised. I thought it happened at the same place as the 1990 one.

I remember that crash, I went near the scene of the wreck, though I didn't see any derailed cars.

Hi there, Nathans9955.
Not sure what you meant by your comment. This derailment happened at the southern end of Streetsville (Mississauga) on Queen St.
Or are you referring to the actual railway line?
MISSISSAUGAWATCH 3 years ago
Must have been on the CP Galt Sub near Milton.
