Dark Super Sonic is the same as Super Sonic XP (plus from what I can see he only did the transformations from the games and the only Dark Super Sonic in the games were Sonic 2 - Sonic & Knuckles)

Dark Sonic appeared in Sonic X one episode with a very similar origins as the original Super Sonic making a lot of people predict who knew the whole story behind Super Sonic predict what was going to happen next after hearing him "not feel so well" and then get angry. The color was different for significance.

Perhaps is was the three rings that fit his form the most. Regardless, it is the equivalent to the chaos emerald turning Sonic into Super Sonic. Except seeing as the 7 sacredrings holds the book together, they are more protectors, so it turned Sonic into something more fitting towards the story. appearence wise.

actually they only show 3 rings and they show Erazor with 4 rings but they never say they really only used them, as far as I can see, Sonic knocked the power of seven out of Alf-Layla-Wa-Layla, meaning it's possible they both used the power of all seven somehow =P (otherwise I don't see why Erazor would go through the trouble of gathering them only to use jsut 4 of them and why Sonic couldn't have used then before XD)
