OK to all the Lomu-lovers out there: how many tries did Lomu score against the Boks?
Fact is, despite the admiration I have for him as a player, he was one-dimensional. Tana Umaga was a FAR more devastating winger, and he played centre in the end. Lomu missed tackle after tackle (heck come to think of it, I can't recall a great try-saving tackle of his) against all but the most inept of attackers. He was TERRIBLE under a high or bouncing ball, and how good was he at kicking?
I remember seeing him at the fag end of his career and he was without doubt the greatest centre i have ever seen. What a tragedy he never played more international rugby. The man was a golden god.
not sure about in league.id have loved to have seen him given the opportunity to play league along with that great french centre wingers stand offs scrum halfs and full back called blanco playing league also at the highest level which would have been in australian compettion.gerber was outstanding at union level no doubt.it just leaves you thinking its a great misjustice that he was denied the chance to play world cup because of his countries goverment.
This is the way to react after a try in my oppinion, score it, turn around and run back to the half way line, none of this hugging and fists in the air etc. which really just rubs in the other teams faces that you just scored.
I dont mind seeing a team mate grab and congratulate the scorer, or a bit of a fist to the air in front of the crowd to get them on your side...but personally I hate the stuff shane williams does with his little hand over his eyebrows 'looking for the opposition,' or effectively when team mates start this nut licking ceremony they seem to perform these days..
Lomu wouldn't ever have made a Springbok side. He was simply too one-dimensional, and he didn't like getting hammered, so he couldn't play forward. Too bad, #8 was the right position for him. He'd be nowhere today against the likes of modern wingers...
@bcfsl what a you smoking man? it must be some good shit lol prime lomu would make any team in any time and in any era. but the thing is, we never saw lomu in his prime because he was never 100% fit. boks are very good but they are shit this year. dont kid yourself man, lomu would make any springbok team, same to any other nation. peace.
your comment was a long time ago, but im glad to see someone with the same opinion...too many times i mention something like this and people start with the keyboard warrior syndrome.
Lomu had fantastic potential back in the day, and i would have loved to see him play more, but i do feel the same, he didnt offer much more than speed and bash...
If you take someone such as Alesana Tuilagi who is shorter and lighter (yet still huge) he offers a huge amount more as a big winger ...
.....than lomu ever did in his time. Lomu I found was one of a kind, no one else had a 'lomu' on their team to take on the guy, especially not on the wing. These days with big centres and big wingers, he would be closed down and given little space. No.8 would definately where I would put a man of his calibre, even then with No.8's nowadays taking little kicks and chances i dont think he'd fit in...
@bidefordrfc It was a response to your Lomu analysis. Tiquiri played a big physical game, was better on the tackle than Lomu and terrorised defences with his runs. Often took more than two to take him down. And Lomu wasn't even the first Lomu-esque player. Bryan Williams in the 70s and Tuigamala just before Lomu. Lomu benefited from playing more tests than the others and getting into international rugby before more wingers were of his stature.
the best centre hands down! odriscoll would be on the bench as sub for this guy. im a kiwi, the best kiwi centre ever - joe stanley! bunce and umaga are princes to this guy but gerber is the closest ive seen to a COMPLETE centre. master of the sidestep. each sidestep unique and intelligent like in this clip, making the fullback and winger clash. brilliant player, centre in my world ever 15. u cannot compare lomu and gerber. 2 diff positions, 2 diff fishes in the sea.legends in thea own right.
I think they would have. It's shame that apartheid schnaaied so many great rugby players of SA out of the greatness they so richly deserved. Danie was a legend. Lomu pales in comparison. Same with Naas no-one gives that man the respect he so rightfully deserves. Can you imagine if you had a player like him in the modern era? Not even Carter was that good.
Danie Gerber was indeed a legend. But no way does Lomu pale in comparison, Lomu scored tries nobody else could. I rate Gerber alongside Phillipe Sella as the best centres that I've seen.
Hey man, That was probably a bit unfair of me. I apologize. Lomu was great in his own sense. Brute power and strong running. Danie Gerber was a side step master and quick with the ball in hand.
Lomu was a machine and it's a pity that he had to hang up his boots. Respect!
As a kid I'd always back the ABs (I still do), but the strange was my favourite players were always the star players from the other teams. Wierd huh? With the Boks I liked Gerber, with the French it was Blanco and Sella, Australia it was Campese, and with England....well, maybe not all the teams! LMAO
ROFL!!!!!!! Good one. I was 11 when the boks won the 1995 world cup. All I could remember from all the games was Lomu running over the english player Mike Cat I think?
@boywithnoears Plain and simple our win in 87' does'nt count cause the hairybacks were'nt there...cavaliers prob not that significant cause it was'nt the All Blacks
Apartheid was a tragedy for a player like this. Ho would of course have been hailed as a much greater player if Soth Africa had been playing internationally. But what else could countries like NZ do? My father and grandfather ahd to stop talking to each durng the '81 tour or they would physically fight.
since a kid growing up in New Zealand I was raised on Buce Robertson and Silky Steve Pokere, but absolutely was in awe of the first big inside backs who exemplified power, speed, step of both feet and off load in a tackle and feed his wings.
Danie spun those okes 360...number 14 and 15 tackled each other, BRILLIANT. Eastern Province were at their greatest with him, Garth Wright, Frans Eramus, Michael Du Plessis, Tino Kankowski on the wing and Shalk Burger senior before he left for WP.
in my 33 years, Ive seen some fantastic backline players scything through defences - Sella, Blanco, Guscott, Horan, Umaga... but I have yet 2C a player match Gerber's ability (Cullen comes close tho). He was never a good defender, but on attack his step was unstoppable. Agst the Cavaliers he was already over the hill, so all the comments on his performances against Horan etc. are relative. In his prime he is the best attacking centre that ever stepped foot on a rugby field (IMHO).
Danie Gerber was the best centre ever, can you imagine if he was playing today with change in technology, he would have even been better, you cannot compare this man with anyone he was in a league of his own. Does anyone remember 101 doelynverhale??? If so do you know where i can lay my hands on a copy i think its only floating around in vhs!!
in daardie jare was die sprinbok agterlyn iets soos: divan serfontein, naas botha mighael du plessis, danie gerber, carel du plessis, ray mordt en johan heunis. wat ek die meeste van die drie hou is die twee iere wat mekaar tackle.

Martin Johnson rated him as the greatest out side centre...I was only just born in his hay day but everytime I see the Cavaliers tour on DVD I scream for them to give it to Gerber, because everytime he touched the ball he seemed to score...If gerber had played now days no one would touch him
what a great man, i lived in PE in the 80's, saw him play every season; a freak player, could step anyone even though he was huge. gerber along with frank bunce, tim horan & sella were greats from a golden era... please some more gerber posts here.
Gerber was a rare combination of size, power, speed, agility and vision. I saw himmplay in the 1986 north v. south game and he was very good...but it was not a test type match....more like the Barbarians.
Mind you...if you chose Sella, Horan, Gerber, Bunce or BOD u will not got far wrong. It's like chosing a vintage wine!
It's a pitty there aren't more clips of Gerber on you-tube. He would be my choice as 2nd best rugby player ever. The problem is people only hear others talk about him or see a single clip of his brilliance, but it does not do him true justice.
In a centenary game at Twickenham (Northern vs Southern hemisphere), the world was able to see some of his brilliance. Playing against Sella (who many saw at the time as the best centre ever), he showed all his skills, made Sella look ordinary
Gerber was a great centre and belongs in the pantheon of midfield maestros, that include Horan and Bunce. I live in the UK where the majority of people drool about soccer. They have no idea about the beauty of 15 man game, and probably have never heard of Danie Craven, Frik du Preez, let alone Danie Gerber.
Did you know?...On the day the Sprinboks were allowed to re-enter International Rugby there was a particular match that took place at EllisPark in Johannesburgh where Frank Bunce got the opportunity to come face to face with Gerber...The Boks lost but so did Bunce ...Gerber cut him down to score 2 tries that day...I recall reading Bunce's comments on the Sunday paper..."In his younger days he must've been something...I really struggled to mark him!"
I saw the Test back in 1992-but a one Test confrontation is not enough to compare these two great centres, But, the following week, Horan ate up the field and literally tossed Gerber to the ground to set up Campese's try. Horan showed moments of genius that day, and during the 1991-1993 years, I not seen since. Three great midfield artists.
Gerber playing for the Barbarians against Scotland at Murrayfield in the early 80's is burned into my memory. At the end of the match, and five tries later, I knew I'd seen the most explosive centre in world rugby and one of the best of all time. I wish he'd been Scottish.
Yes, Tim Horan & Gerber is in the same league. I would put Sella & Brian O'Driscoll in there as well. Not sure about Mike Gibson? And from that elite group, Gerber would be my 1st choice without a doubt!
Bill Mclaren has him and Mike Gibson of Ireland as his two centres in his Greatest Ever XV. Though like somebody has said already i would love to have seen him play with Tim Horan too.
that clip is from the 1981 Ireland tour to South Africa...Gerber must still rate as one of the best centers ever...that was Fergus Slattery trying to get to him and Naas Botha.
I'd like to get my hands on those Springbok Saga videos or Super SPringbok videos, anyone know where I can buy it? DVD format would be great of course.
Absolutely brilliant. I have that on a tape at home. I'll try organise a better quality version soon, with english commentary for the people out there who don't understand. Classic try, brilliant player.
Danie Gerber sal altyd uitstaan as een van die beste rugbyspelers wat hierdie land nog gesien het.
