  • Wow , I find myself coming back to this song time and time again it just awakens your emotions the beautiful thought provoking lyrics the melodic musical arrangements....just haunting, thanks Ken!

  • I just love her...; D

  • Like so many of her best songs, this one gives voice to obscure emotions; of longing and dreams unfulfilled. Only Dylan Lennon and maybe Van Morrison are in her league.

  • I can so relate to your comment. This song is powerful for me because of a lost love many years ago.

    Catch this folks.

  • That vocal harmony at 1.25 and 2.35 is chilling and the piano melody is so beautiful. Yes it has all been done before - but not quite like this!

  • Phew - so powerful, distracting, exhausting, draining.

  • Some nights, when I have a cigarette in hand, and am feeling very pensive, Joni is the only thing I can listen to. This was the first album I ever had of hers, and it has seen me through many difficult times in life. She is truly the only artist who can stir the deep emotions, hiding in my heart (or soul) the really make me realize how incredible life is, and how truly appreciative we should be of it.

  • My favorite Joni as well. Thanks much.

  • yes! this is one of the finest from a compendium of brilliance.for some reason I also feel a stinging behind the eyes whenever I hear it.

  • This!

  • It's such a great song...I really loved her years at Geffen records even though she didn't sell much. Chinese Cafe at one end, this at the other of that period.

  • This is such a hauntingly beautiful song, and when I heard if, I played this over and over again..and very sentimental also. AmyK

  • @sandey1234 Same here I'm brought to tears every time I hear it! beautiful song!

  • ...loved you 30 years ago Joni!

  • someone had posted an outtake from this tune that was amazing...where is it?...wonder what happened to it...

  • No one knows I am here

  • someone i was once in love with..played this for me...a nice moment

  • Can not stop the impulse to click replay.

  • Love this lyric. Wonderful.

  • the greatest Joni ...is a really treasure for the human race....

  • Thanks for posting this masterpiece.

  • gorgeous i agree with blackkendoll82...gotta add "don juan's reckless daughter"

a gay man watches 30 years from 2 grey rooms with a view...

  • This really is one of my favorite Joni songs. It's the perfect blend of nostalgic reverie finale for a great album.

  • Beautiful beyond words...Look after your beautiful self, Joni. The world needs your wisdom and comfort.

  • She titled it "Speechless." Lyrical inspiration escaped the songwriter until 1989, when she encountered the story of New German Cinema director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who, amid the repression of Germanys antigay Paragraph 175 laws, was left broken-hearted by a male lover in his youth.

  • Why don't the radio stations play this masterpiece instead of the generic garbage they pump out?

  • I think the quickest answer to your very good question is: Garbage makes money. Seriously, if it weren't for the garbage, how could we pick out the great stuff? Fortunately, we have Joni.

  • @inkforhire

    what year was this out?

they could play this on adult contemporary stations today and no one would know it's old for those who have to listen to something new.

  • @donovamj Because they don't know good music when they hear it. They're doing it to appeal to the masses, who want what they want musically because that's how they've been conditioned. It's a big circle that keeps feeding on itself, and has for at least the last 15 years.

  • If you like this, try her piano/sax instrumental "One Week Last Summer"- it'll blow you away!

  • Ever hear a song that you were sure was written just for you?

Makes me think about that gorgeous sweedish man that used to walk by my window... loved each other but he was married....

  • @LaLawre1 Same thought - mine was a Jewish psychologist that looked like Bob Dylan.

  • Music to leave this life by.....

  • @TheNigelr

    Excellent way to meet God............

  • Dare I say this is one of Joni Mitchell's VERY best songs - ever. The opening piano part is brilliant.

  • Another gorgeous painting by the master...Joni !! Thanks, I will acquaint myself with "Blonde in the Bleachers" (uhh, I mean the song...not the blonde, heh).

  • I agree, my fav song, followed very closely by Help Me. Great chords here, sounds, arrangement, performance, mix, mood, it's perfect. A true 'songwriter's song' I wish I had written and recorded. Too bad it's far from the most famous.

  • In 1991 I worked in a plastics firm injection moulding, the job bored me out of my mind, but this song (as did the rest of the album) through my walkman head phones, used to blow me away.

  • magic

  • OliveJewel, I share your comment: "laying on my bed and hearing this song it was like an out of body experience, like my soul left my body and time traveled through the universe and then came back at the end of the song."

  • I'd love to hear a Chakatized version of 'Two Grey Rooms'. What a ride that would be!

  • One of Chaka Khan's fave songs I believe.

  • Love this! Brings back childhood memories!

  • truly truly one of her best. absolutely haunting. every song on this album is perfection

  • 12 years ago I heard Joni Mitchell's Blue and wanted to buy an album of hers for myself so I just went to the the used CD store and randomly got Night Ride Home. I still don't totally understand why this song makes people cry, but I can remember laying on my bed and hearing this song it was like an out of body experience, like my soul left my body and time traveled through the universe and then came back at the end of the song.

  • That's awesome that you like Blonde in the Bleachers, blackkendoll82. Everybody always overlooks that song.

  • One of her most beautiful songs; and hers is a huge songbook.

  • it touches my soul which leads to my heart which leads to my tears..............god is great !!!

  • yes mike......preach!!!

  • M-

    I couldn't say it better.

  • I am Christian, but am wondering... how does this song remind you of God? LOL Not being flippant just asking out of plain curiosity.

  • Check out the extended version of this on that Geffen set. There's like at least 2 minutes of intro piano and awesome abstract vocals before it gets going.

  • is it on the geffen set that has the cardboard sleeves?

  • She first came up with this melody in 1982 while doing "Wild Things Run Fast" but only came up with the lyrics in '91 when she did this album. Little trivia fact for you. :)

  • ohh thank you i never knew that.........its such an amazing song.....i can see years put into this.

  • When I found this out I was very surprised.

Another thing she said about this song - that she does not only write songs about herself because this is a song about a gay man staring twice a day the man he loved 30 years ago. That is a true story she heard.

I would love to have this song with no lyrics. I was called Speechelss and I would really like to hear Speechless.

I love this song very very much!

  • Comment removed

  • In the case of this song, she had the melody first, in 1982. She added the lyrics in 1991.

  • Wonderful song, one of her best piano melodies too. Most striking line:

    'Rainy days you run

    then you fade so fast

    below my window'

  • yess thats my favorite part..."hot days your shirtsssss undone..........rainy days you runnnnn ...then you fade so fastttt below my window".....that line gives me goosebumps everytime.

  • my best part is another sad one:

    noone knows I´m here,

one day I just disappear :_(

Repeating and realizing it really makes me very sad.

  • it just brings tears to my eyes every time i hear this, just beautiful.

  • this is the most beautiful song that i have ever heard.

  • yes it is..its one of my favs of all time
