Love Hammill, Adore this song and this performance is blow away!!!!! I have been listening to PH since 1974/75.. seen VDGG in NYC their only NYC Performance OCT 76 and then again in NYC July 2009! Was luckyenuff to see him solo in 1978 at the other end then in 79 at the bottom line! yeha I am lucky!! thanks for sharing!
Strange... for years and years this used to be my favourite song and somehow I'd forgotten about it... thanks for bringing back memories (and making me take the original out of its 1977record cover) :)
A truly unique and stirring performance. One of my favorites. Litzlitz, thank you. Btw, though it's true that this video footage is superior to the old youtube upload of this, the audio is tinny here. I wonder if that could be rectified. Thanks again for all your great PH uploads!
I just started discovering Peter Hammill in the past year, buying his music starting from the first albums (including Van Der Graaf Generator) and I am overwhelmed by the artistic genius. I have 7 albums so far and will collect them all, savouring each one.
People which knows him, never forget. But Hammill and VDGG also played dark progressive, some texts are against God etc. Somebody can be infuriate but I´m not... I´m from Czech republic, English is not my language but he has very deep text, great musician.
Great video of one of the greatest singers of progressive rock or music in general. And when you look at the right at related videos and you read about an artist named "master pussy pimp" you know how far most music and artists of today are away from such music like this :-( really a shame. greetings from germany
Hail to a Great British Artist, refuted by his own time and country. This performance demonstrates the artistic level of the progressive rock artists of the 70s, whose works were effectively and violently truncated by the press and record companies. Shame on you Britain!! The future will look back at you and judge you as a nation who pushed your best men into darkness while worshipping Samantha Fox. What a fall from near greatness into sheer misery.
@TOREMJ What a load of bull! Britain has nothing to be ashamed of. It has given this miserable world the best culture possible. A few stupid critics don't count, they exist in any country. Charisma Records alone is a major cultural contribution. Samantha Fox has nothing to do with Peter Hammill. For every Samantha Britain can offer dozens of major talents. If you have a problem with the country, go and see your shrink.
oh my. What a performance! One of the great things about Peter Hammill (who i am recently rediscovering) is that no matter how horrible you are feeling and how bad a breakup you may go through, it is never nearly as bad as his. But seriously, the guy is a brilliant songwriter and performer and this performance makes that very obvious. Are there more performances of him with orchestra besides this and "traintime"?
Tortured Artist Effect
but a great song,
and delight to see him wallow in pure 19th century Sturm un drang Angst!

Musically I hear echoes of Sibelius here but has there ever been a voice like this in a generation or two generations?

I do not understand modern times! How a composer/singer like Hammill is forgotten by people who love true music.

@FlyingJunk It was ALL the critics. They started hailing punks who admitted they couldnt play a note and later playback pop queens whose boobs sang.
