  • being on mars would be pretty cool

  • We could go to Mars now we actually have the technology but we need to be able to travel much faster in spaceships that what we now have..Distance becomes a big factor and speed cuts down on the time it would take to get to Mars and back. But, we can't live on Mars and walk around like we do here on Earth without a spacesuit..It will be a very dangerous untaking to say the least...

  • Not a bad idea, pretty much the only way to get funding for such a mission at this point in time would be to use corporations to fund it by finding ways to profit from the mission!

  • Why does the mention of Mars elicit such anger?

The exploration and colonization of extraterrestrial bodies is THE ANSWER to a multitude of mankind's current problems.

Using the "Mars Direct" plan proposed by JPL and NASA engineer, Robert Zubrin we can get a colony up and running on the red planet for about the same amount of money expended on the 2009 Obama stimulus. Unlike the stimulus, a concentrated effort to colonize Mars would actually give us something to show for the investment.

  • What a bad use of NLP. We should put a football team on mars. Now that is truly the American way. American Idol contestants can host season 13 for finals

  • Walmart logos on mars

  • I am still waiting for my ticket...

  • China will be the first to put men on mars. simple.

  • China will be the first to put men on mars. simple.

  • Marketing mars? Well, it's important to remember that the arms industry is one of the most monetarily profitable. That's why you had the US selling weapons to both sides during the Iran/Iraq conflict, while officially maintaining the position of neutrality and no involvement. If humanity goes out into space with the narrow minds and all the erroneous value systems that dominate society today, we will still end up having an elite that works towards self-preservation and domination.

  • Oooh

  • As much as I recognize the role of scientific and technological progress throughout our history, I am very afraid of ventures of different nations into space, because that's there the battlegrounds of the future will become. People have been advocating nuclear weapons for defense purposes. If competing nations will go out and "colonize the system," there will be another arms race, which will make the cold war weapons look like slingshots.

  • As self-destructive as it may sound, I can only hope that some Martian species would thwart our efforts to brand Mars with Starbucks and related corporate logos. I agree with Bill Hicks, "all of you in marketing, kill yourselves now. STOP TRYING TO PUT A DOLLAR SIGN ON EVERYTHING YOU SEE!!!"

  • Either the US goes to Mars, or some other nation will, and that nation will get the benefits of itl

  • Let's start a revolution! Vote for Dr. R. Joseph 2012!

  • y r u in the forest

  • I think people forget that there is no economical incentive to colonise mars.

You end up on a crummy water and atmosphere deprived planet that is full of dirt and metal.

What do you want to produce there that is so valuable that humans on earth would buy it for exhorbitant prices to sustain the continued presence on mars?

The new world made sense when tabacco, slaves and spices were involved. But colonising mars? It's just not profitable for business unless they gain unlawful sovereignty.

  • @BrutusAlbion so your saying its useless to do anything that isn't economically beneficial? Ever heard of fun?

  • @Pieishman Oh certainly not good sir. My life is riddled with useless uneconomical activities. Such acts are ofcourse for my own personal enrichment of my life despite their meager economical advantages provided in knowledge.

But do u want to volunteer to live on mars? Living expenses are through the roof...thats no fun now is it? And what are you gonne do for a living huh?

We'll settle mars eventualy when we have either fixed this planet or made it too crappy we have to leave.

  • @BrutusAlbion

On the contrary. Mars is rich in mineral resources which will provide long-term economic gain.

In addition you have the inevitable technological advances that will result from a concerted Mars colonization effort. And, in the more distant future, terraforming may produce even more benefits.

If you are looking only at short-term benefits, then you are correct. But short-term thinking is responsible for many of the problems we face here on Earth today.

  • @Lawofidentity The earth is rich in mineral resources which are a gazillion times more accessable than mars' resources.

Look don't get me wrong, I'd love to colonise mars, it's a great long-term plan. I'm thinking real long term here, 200-400 years.

When we got poverty on earth, are unable to feed or protect the innocent, I think we first need to fix THIS PLANETS problems first, before we go venturing out and colonising more. If we can fix our problems, we can go into space.
