  • ok lets get this passenger train going, wait oh shit i forgot the coaches! lol

  • does the steam really power the loco

  • @hornbymanzpc Yes. For example, Steam is created and superheated and the steam pushes the piston back and forth and drives the wheels.

  • just wondering if you use tap water and it scales up, can you descale it with vinegar and boiling water like you can on a mamod steam model or is it too fragile to do so

  • @steamfan1998 its probaly to fraigle to go at but you could have a go but i would be dangerous

  • @eoin730 Thanks, i havent got one yet but im thinking about it when i have the money but if its too dangerous then i wont risk it

  • @steamfan1998 Good question - but one I can't answer, I'm afraid :o(

My view is that the 'steam ways' in this size of model are so tiny that they can foul up very quickly so I always use distilled (or water from a condensing tumble drier) which means I've never had the problem.

  • @Tomlan2007 hey tom this is Dylan. We haven't talked in a while I was wondering if you have made any more live steam videos.I was also wondering if you have made any more videos of you hornby live steam flying scottsman.I was also wondering if you have made any more daft dave videos. Please respond and tell me how you are doing as well as ansewering these questions. Thanks from Dylan

  • I want one! :-)))

  • Hello and thanks for a very instructional video. I noticed you said that a couple of drops of oil per run are sufficient, is it better to do it this way instead of the 0.5 mls oil per 3-4 runs as stated in the manual?

BTW: for those asking about water, i run mine on normal collected rainwater . this is free from limescale, all i do to it is that i have poured it through coffee filter paper to make sure its free of particles.

  • thx for the vid it helped but i made the mistake of over tightening the o rings and can't find any that fit do you know where i can find some

  • yey i was wondering what type of power track do you have to use for live steam or can you use the normal dc power track or the digital power track thanks

  • @mongoosekid14 Hi, It's standard Hornby track. You just have to be sure it's isolated from any other power source.

  • What happens if you use other types of water?

I'd imagine that tap water would limescale the insides to hell, but what about others?

  • @leeham991 Sorry for the late relpy... Constantly running on tap water would cause problems but I've used it in an emergency and it's not harmed the loco. People have used water from a condensing blow dryer as a souce of distilled water and say it works fine - but smells a bit perfumy!.

  • Hey Tom this is Dylan I was wondering how you're doing its been a while since

we talked.I have Golden Fleece still but she has a con-rod problem right now I'm hopeing to get it fixed. The con-rod that's messed up is the one where when you tighten or loosen it,it turns in the direction of the tightening tool that comes with the set the tool I'm talking about specificlly is the one that fits on the little screws that hold the con-rods to the driving wheels of the locomotive.PLEASE help. Can you?

  • I have just bought a Hornby train and controller set. I can't wait to get them! Yours look beautiful. I just have to buy the distilled water.

  • You made the boarding platform from scale scenes didnt you?

  • do you ever fear that it might explode? Did they make sure it wound'nt?

  • now not ewt to upset anyone but as far as i know andi know an awful lot about these you should practice on a rolling roadnot on the tracs correct thx

  • hey tom this is Dylan again I have a question for you how long is the power track.OH! and tom please reply to my outher comment and please reply to this comment too. Thanks from Dylan

  • Comment removed

  • hey tom this is Dylan again.I have a outher question.how loud is the choo-choo..or chug-chug as you say.Oh!! a outher thing I have a comment under this one asking a outher question abuot the carriages. Please respond to this comment and the outher.thanks again from Dylan.

  • @PalomboDylan Hi Dylan. Watch my vid 'Live Steam in Crawley Down' for an idea of how loud the loco is. I did respond to your earlier comment about the carriages - see below.

  • hey tom this is Dylan again. So sorry to bother you but I was wondering what would happen if I a few wieghts inside the carriages and dont ask me how I do that I just have the smart analizing type brain that allows me to.If you are wondering where I got the wieghts they are from an old broken down...please excuse my language but CRAPY 12 volt direct current controlled OO-Gauge or HO-scale is what we call it in my part of the U.S.A train. Please write back. Thanks from Dylan

  • hey tom this is that Dylan kid again I am so sorry to bother you again but I have a outher question do you need to do any jogging when ever you set the heating controls to simmer or running mode to make the red led turn on.Please write back as soon as you can. Thanks again Dylan.

  • @PalomboDylan 'Simmer', 'Run' and 'Super-heat' just set the amount of steam being produced and have no control over the LEDs. The 'jogging' lever controls speed and direction, so you will use the jogging lever to light the red LED when you bring it to a stop.

  • hey tom this is that Dylan kid again.I have a question. When you add a load or (carriages) is thier any thing special about the carriages that makes them heavy to where they keep the locomotive from speeding up uncontrolably or are the carriages just plain plastic with nothing in them and by nothing in them I meant like nothing inside where the passengers sit.If there is any thing special about them let me know and if thier is nothing special about them let me know.Write back. Thanks agian Dylan.

  • @PalomboDylan They are just normal carriages. Wagons and trucks will do. A small load when you first run it will make it easier to control.

  • hey tom this is that Dylan kid again from the U.S.A.I just wanted to tell you that you are right about what you said in the comment that you sent me.In my possition I should be happy with what ever live steam loco I get.I am getting the golden fleece.Oh and tom 1 more question is the golden fleece a british stream liner.Write back as soon as you can. Thanks from Dylan.

  • @PalomboDylan Hi Dylan, thanks for the kind words - I'm always glad to help!

Yes, Golden Fleece was a genuine British stream-liner. All the streamlined A4's were excellent looking locos (in my opinion :-) ) so I'm sure you will have great fun when you get yours.

    All the best

    Tom

  • hey tom this is that Dylan kid again from the US. I tried to buy my silver link off of a UK website called amozon.co.uk then when I finished ordering it they said they cant deliver it to my adress. 508 HARRELL.DR Lafayette,Louisiana is my adress. Lafayette,Louisiana is the state and country. I guess me and silver link were not meant to be. Now I have to buy..GULP..the golden fleece. Thanks for the info on the trains. Tom please you have to try and ask them to send it to my country and state.

  • hi Tom this is that Dylan kid again. I am sorry to bother you but I need to know every thing before I run my train. I was wondering if I can use distilled water that has been procceced thruogh steam distillation, micron filtration, ozonation and ultraviolet light. Plaese write back as soon as you can thanks Dylan Palombo.

  • @PalomboDylan That sounds like it's perfect Dylan. Steam distillation = distilled water. And the rest of the process is just icing on the cake to make it purer.

  • tomlan this is that Dylan kid again from the Uninted States. I am so sorry to bother you agian But I have anouther question for you. Can I use distilled water from a store. Plaese write back as soon as you can. Oh! I just came up with anouther question. I am so sorry to keep bothering you. When ever you set the conteroller to super heat or any outher boiler setting does the red LED come on auto maticley or do you have to jog the lever thanks agian Dylan Palombo.

  • @PalomboDylan Hi Dylan, as long as it is real distilled water (NOT de-ionised) then it's safe to use. No, you don't need to do any jogging of the lever when you set to super heat. It's all automatic.

    Cheers

    Tom

  • Tomlan this is Dylan palombo from the US. I love hornby live steam. I think I am getting a hornby live steam for Christmas specific locomotive A4 Silver Link. I was wondering do you have to give it a push after every time it goes forward until it starts going around the track by it self. Write back as soon as you can.

  • @PalomboDylan Hi Dylan! No, you only have to give it a push when you first start it. What happens is that the steam condenses in the cool cylinders when you first start off. Once they are nice and warm, no 'pushing' will be needed.

Enjoy your Silver Link. (I saw that loco in real life in August 1958. Oh my, I'm getting old!!!).

  • ive recently purchased this set myself yet my loco refuses to move. it sits there releasing the occasional burst of steam with the red light remaining on no matter what i do with the controls am i doing something wrong?

  • do the sets come with distilled water and oil or do u buy them separet

  • @hornbyfan1 The sets come with oil only. You have to get your own distilled water.

You can use water from a condensing tumble drier or a de-humidifier but you need to filter it first. Use a paper coffee filter.

  • Is the power track the live steam uses the same as the 12v one?

  • @thecuddylier No, it's 17VAC and packs quite a few amps so a normal 12VDC is no use.

  • @Tomlan2007 I mean does it use the same power track bit?

  • @Tomlan2007 Can the controller leads go into the power track that the 12v DC or DCC uses?

  • @thecuddylier Sorry. Yes it uses the same power track connection.

  • @thecuddylier thanks a lot for helping me, btw like your video, it will help me a lot when I get mine very soon

  • is it absolutely necessary that you use hornby oil, or can you use regular model lubrication oil?

  • wonderful model

  • very nice!

  • great vid is ur hornby finished now

  • Awesome! Great video. :-)

  • I think I would be having way too much fun with Hornby live steamers.

Do they last for a long time (and I mean YEARS and YEARS) before breaking down to the point where you can't use them again?

  • If treated with respect, there's no reason why they shouldn't. I know of very early ones still happily chugging around to this day.

  • hey great video. i just got a hornby live steam silver link. i does take alot of practice to drive thouse trains its not easy lol

  • Ummm... I don't think so. Computers I can live with, like the sound chips in the DCC models, but liquids, electricity, tiny real steam pistons? Surely that's asking for trouble when they start to get a bit old. I'll wait a bit and see.....

  • cool....how do u stop her do u just go back a few clicks till she stops

  • Yes, that will slow it to a stop. For an emergency stop you just hold the lever over until the red light comes on.

  • DO I HAVE TO USE THE WATER FROM HORNBY?

  • You can use any make of distilled water. Don't get it mixed up with di-ionised or battery water. It HAS to be labelled 'distilled'.

  • THX

  • Can you work a live steam train thing on any hornby track or do you have to get a special one for it

  • You can use any currently manufactured track. Just make sure the electrical connections are good.

  • i love my live steam.

its broken in and runs like a dream.

  • hey nice video, is the the live steam worth getting/worth the money ?

  • Cheers mate.

If you have a largish (say 8' x 4') oval track and you like a challenge to become a real train driver, then the answer is yes.

If you just like owning a fine bit of engineering to run on a rolling road, the answer is still yes.

However, if you just want a loco that comes out of the box and is dead easy to run, then the answer is no...

  • im from aus 2 and im looking at buying a livesteam a3 and putting a kd on so i can haul my fs and bs cars

  • thanksalot

  • can i use distill water which cud be drink or can only us hornby distilled watar?

  • Yes, you can use any make of distilled water, but DONT use anything that calls itself 'de-ionised' or 'battery' water.

  • I'm from australia and these ate expensive but I am going to get they are one of the best things out great bids by the wat

  • I've been told that if you order them from the UK, they are a lot cheaper than what Hornby in Oz are charging. Check out Hattons UK website - they do world-wide delivery.

  • haha its finely arrived

  • Enjoy!

Any problems running it, please contact me and I'll see if I can help.

    Cheers

  • ok i will get my friends camera. i hope it arrives soon lol

  • i have finely ordered the scotsman set!!!!!

it will be here in 3 to 8 days!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great news.

Do a vid of your first steam up and let us all enjoy the event!

Don't forget that it's a precision bit of equipment, follow all the instructions and be patient! :-))

  • How long does it take to "get up to steam"? Open to anyone who knows

  • Up to 10 minutes Andy. It depends if you fully fill the boiler or if you half fill for a short run.

  • Oh Ok Thanks I worked it out for me to be able to buy the FlyingScotsman Set it would take me 2 years to save up with me gettin my paper round money and pocket money. But ive been told by so many people it is worth every penny.

  • hi there how much are these now

  • £500-ish

  • thank you very much for that!

  • what would u recomand the mallard set or the scotsman one.

im very persuaded to get a LS set.

  • Go for the Scotsman set. Hornby did an internal re-design for the A3 and it's resulted in a better runner.

Get one. You'll enjoy every minute running it!

  • very nice!

  • this is mad i want one lol :P good vid 200/100 how do u go backwards?

  • Thanks bactatank. You move the lever to slow down until it stops. Then hold it over until the whistle sounds and keep flicking the lever until it starts moving backwards.

    Easy! ;-)

  • oh i see k thx

  • Hornby Live steam Looks great.I Think i will buy one of the A3s.

  • Hi David, thanks for the comment and the rating :-) I would strongly recommend the A3, it's by far the better performer than the A4. I hope you manage to get one!

    Cheers

  • Comment removed

  • Also how long does it take to heat up.

  • Well done. I'm in the market for the Mallard. I'm over in the States and except for fellows like you information on Hornby's Live Steam is scarce. Thank you for your time and effort.

  • Thanks Dan, I hope you manage to get yourself a Mallard. Please get back to me if you need any help once you get one.

Your Tri-motor vid is brilliant. I can't understand why it's got so few views.

  • Great video! 5* i've uploaded live steam vids if you want to see them :)

  • Hay just to envy every one I got my Live steam set all new from the Hornby Factory for £200

  • I love watching videos lick this, there really good.

    keep it up mate!

  • awesum is the word, Hornby live steam is amazing, oh and is that SS Great Britain in the yards, lol ........................

  • Hi Tracey, nice to hear from you!

It's actually the Revell CSS Alabama. It's proving a bit of a challenge - it's a very old moulding and needs an awful lot of work to make it look right. Still, it keeps me out of mischief. :-)

  • Live steam is awesome

  • cool i'd get live steam but i realized they cost something like 700 euros

  • Cheers mate. The full set (including track) is 700 but I think you can purchase a loco and controller for about 550 but that's still a lot of money!

  • yeah, besides i already have mallard and flying scotsman so i wouldn't want live steam now

  • there are more then just mallard anf flying scotsman.

  • yeah i know but out of all of them i like those 2 the best

  • so do i.
