1968 for this one,..This was a time when top 40 stations in the south played more soul music than stations in other parts of the country. This was huge in The Carolina. As I write my book on the best 100 pop songs ever this will be high on the list....
This group, including Cissy Houston, mother of Whitney Houston, should be checked out on Wikipedia. They sang w/everyone-Aretha, Wilson Pickett, Elvis, Percy Sledge, Jimi Hendrix(!), the Bee Gees, Franki Valli and more. I remember their hit "Sweet Inspiration" in 1968.
...according to Wikipedia, it was released on March 30, 1968, and became the group's first and only top forty hit on the Billboard Top 40 Pop Chart, peaking at number 18 during a ten week stint on the charts...
elvis always said they really lived up to their name, and that they do sure is no bad about myrna, they are all so loved and now it seems most of all the ones that was with and close to elvis now over 30 years after hid death are now starting to get much older and leaving way to soon just like elvis only he was so much younger when he left this world he loved so much
This was a hit in the gay bars in the 70,s I remember the man i was dancing with while this was playing. He was and still is a sweet inspiration he is my husband 28 years now still sweet.
Chico Winston - Sax (Tenor), Tenor (Vocal) Ebony Web - Piano Estelle Brown - Vocals, Performer Michael Allen - Piano Myrna Smith - Vocals, Performer Ray Griffin - Bass, Guitar (Bass) Robert Thomas - Guitar Ronald Coleman - Trumpet Ronald Colman - Trumpet Sylvia Shemwell - Vocals Terry Johnson - Drums The Memphis Horns - Horn The Memphis Symphony Orchestra - Strings
other details concerning the ladies cd,,,sweet inspirations
no cissy was not on this cd,i check some more and the documentary that i seem in MD-at the time was incorrect, below are the three that was on the cd.they took 2 weeks however, they corrector it.
Cissy's solo kills me every time. Whitney sounded just like her in her 20's. Love her "Oohs" @ 2:24 and 2:36. Whitney definitely got that from her mom. LOVE this song!!! Many people covered it, but didn't come close.
update: Cissy houston did sing on this one as a matter of fact she was the lead singer, they did a documentary about Cissy and they showed them rehersal, listen closly, you can hear her.
Agreed , frosty!!! These girls were Magnificent! Cissy Houston was the greatest, although, if memory serves me, she didn't sing on this particular recording. Wasn't the lead a girl by the name of Estelle?
that electric gulter and piano is kicking right on time ...I just can't stop playing this.SUCH CLASS,SUCH POWER.BEATIFUL SINGING...CISSY GIRLS!!! RAW IS RIGHT!!!
know wonder this MAN told whitney when she started out singing ...if she was anything like her mother, then she is a winner. After hearing Cissy's again,( i looked for this song with cissy leading. FOR 6 MONTHS.
...These ladies are THE BEST,SOUNDS LIKE THE GOSPEL CHOIR IN MY OLD CHURCH IN THE 60'S...MS C.HOUSTON IS AS FREASH AS EVER...GO LADIES!!! YOU HIT A GRAND SLAM!
@frostyhero Agreed, frosty! These girls were so F%$#kin great! I loved them and I love them now...Cissy Houston was #1, although I don't she sang on this particular song. Wasn't the lead singer a girl by the name of Estelle?

When Elvis chose them as his backup female vocalists....no audition was needed. Elvis knew what he wanted, and the Sweets (As he called them) had it. xxxxxx
Dan Penn! Dan Penn! Dan Penn! Dan Penn! Dan Penn! Dan Penn! Dan Penn! Dan Penn! Dan Penn! Dan Penn! Dan Penn!
Dan Penn! Dan Penn! Dan Penn! Dan Penn! Dan Penn! I COULD GO ON FOREVER.. This man is all over the place with top notch music. outstanding songwriting. Superb singing..
No clue as to why Atlantic producer Jerry Wexler followed this Top 20 Billboard gem with a dreadful version of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody". It didn't do well.
Yes, it was on Atlantic. The Sweet Inspirations(originally fronted by Cissy Houston, Whitney's mom)did background on hits by Solomon Burke, Ben E. King, and others.
This is one WONDERFUL cut.

At one time, this group included Judy Clay, who had a Stax hit with William Bell - "Private Number". Check it out on YouTube.

hello fellow/sister soul music lovers
does anyone have a copy of Sweet Inspiration that doesn't cut off before the song is over?
I've noticed that sometimes that people upload songs that are too low or loud or cut off before the end of the song
WHY YOU DO THAT????????
