  • This is fantastic!

For some reason though, the way this was filmed reminds me a bit of that Tarsem Singh film, 'The Fall'.

  • I wish the look was more natural, less 'colour corrected' not so advertisingy. Just my feeling. Mumbai is a colourful and varied quilt. Films like this always work. Especially with those who aren't from here.

For those like me who have been here always, its home. Its the way it is. No big deal.

Take a look at Philip Blooms films on faces and cities - Dublin's people, Sofia's people, Venice's people, San Francisco's people. All shot with a still camera, little or no colour correction.

  • Many years ago the Films Division in India made a bunch of films with a similar style. Montage, time lapse, straight shots of faces, gentle moves. Alaaps and tabla solos. Of course, back then in the 70s/80s, they lacked tools like this film had available now. But they did get Alla Rakha, Zakir Hussain on table and at times Lata/Asha on vocals. Gave their films much more heart.

Pramod Pati, Vijay Raghav Rao, Krishna Mohan, Narayanan were some of the pioneers of those shorts.

  • Every time I view this film, Mark, I feel frozen- like I am holding my breath- not moving- captured by the audio, the powerful images, the multiple layers of meaning... excellent work-

  • Excellent portrate of the real Mumbai, and not the prospering outsource capital of the global high tech industry the Indian government hypes up and wants the world to think the city really is. Looking foward to seeing your next project.

  • I appreciate your work , would have been insipiring if focused on positive aspects of these people rather than griefs which they go through..

  • Very inspirational. Bravo! - warm Regards to the author from Guxi, Copenhagen, Denmark

  • wonderful......haunting

  • nice nice

  • Wow! great quality!!

  • Excellent work, every sequence is well thought of and shot meticulusly

  • I notice you account does not have any movies posted. Please upload, I would enjoy watching them.

  • Great point. I was totally joking with that comment though. I was just experimenting to get a reaction, to make fun of of that type.

This was a nice film with impressive cinematography.

  • sorry floks pay no mind to him, he's 45 and all he's done with his life is be a bag boy, and hawking cucumbers. sorry for distrubing a great flim guys

  • Masterful cinematography and incredible soundtrack. I think that changed my life.

  • If you love this(and whats not to love) check a movie called Baraka! wordless, and all set to wonderful music!!

  • damn the described how i felt: i'm in deep shit but could care less lol

  • truth is hard to digest.

  • hypnotic... loved each n every sequence of the film... Great soundtrack too!... rock n roll.

  • hypnotic... love each n every frame of what uve shot.... magical work...

  • I am a photographer too but mostly do wildlife. The photography here is excellant and immages of the poor people are very real. The photographer has created very sober mood by arranging all the scenes and people's interactions in the story interwoven very artistically by him and the background music has added the great sense of artistry to the production. Very good job done. Paul

  • Beautiful. Powerful. Though provoking. Amazing soundtrack.

  • Stunning video. The images and music are wonderful. I love learning about different cultures and this is video show the wonderful culture of those in Mumbai. Very powerful stuff here, great work.

  • I'm from Mumbai and this is one of the faces of Mumbai. I don't know why so many people hate it ... it is not a judgmental clip, it's only observational ... and we have to make the interpretations ... the funny thing is, if you see the trailer for Slackistan, which shows a rich side of Pakistan, you will see hateful comments there too!

  • kind of boring.........

  • I just... Don't get it. :/

    Sorry.

  • check out JesusChristLovesForeverAmen(.)blogspot(.)com and JaneEwadeShalWendaChristAmen(.)blogspot(.)com

Praise Jesus and Mary Magdalene and Jeff Fisher and Jane Bowell and Princess Diana.

  • All religions are equal ....Praise all GODS :-)

  • I don't know what is being tried to display here. Is it the face of Mumbai? Certainly not. Actual Mumbai is not this. Mumbai is not a city of poor people. It houses everybody. It is the financial capital of India. Many American companies do business in that city. This movie has shows only the poor people in that city which can be found in any good city. For example in New York City too. I have seen many homeless people in NYC too. Does that mean NYC is a city of homeless ???

  • yes there are poor in the US citys like New york but nothing like what is going on there .. there are very few "poor" and you would never see starving children on the street that may be what gets americans so up set when we go to other countries

it is a shock to us to see a poverty stricken child ...

  • if america stops senseless wars just for OIL even you will see the same in US....Other countries are not dependent on wars unlike US to feed their countrymen...Others believe in hard work and humanity....

  • for america to stop feeding its oil appetite , you must go on an isolationist diet, no more car-just bicycle, no more chinese products, meaning no walmart or any other retailers, everything you buy must be local including food- can you do that if not - shut your moufs !

  • am not american dude....

  • never said u where this applies to all industrilized nations, dude.

  • beautiful, powerful. i love india.

  • great......love the music ...........tabla

  • Incredible!

  • Nuke India!

  • @mytube4view ... wow...that's quite a sensible comment on a work of art. Where do you get that sense from?

  • The first ten minute video on youtube I watched without regret.

  • One would think the children would be sad but they have such a harden and vacant look, what do you say to them? when you meet them " i feel bad here take some money ? " They thank you and walk away feeling as if you have justified your life style in contrast to theirs because your a good person ?

And the old woman i am almost afraid what she would say if i spoke to her... She look as she has so much to say and would tell me about my self..

  • AWESOME !!!

  • As I watched this i wasn't even thinking about poverty or wealth, I don't think that was the point. It's just letting you observe life through the eyes of those people shown. I thought there was a lot of beauty in this video from the landscapes to the music. Most people go through there lives unaware of what's going on around them, they are always in motion, then others stand still and observe. I think it has to do with your own interpretation.

  • ilVeronicali, its great that you saw beauty in the landscapes and music, but for me the music was melancholic. such music in india is used only when someone has passed away. there are other raagaas that are soothing but joyful. had the filmmakers used those raagaas then it would have given a different picture. also the sad forlorn image of the girl at 1:58 shows a picture of poverty. that is why I interpret it as a film on the poor in India

  • Ooooh...I apologize for my ignorance =(

  • th only rsn some of u hate this is bc of pride & arrogance. U don't want th world to only c India as a poverty hell-hole,nd thts understndble. But it is a BIG PROBLEM! Caused not by past life behavior, but by OVERPOPULATION and greedy elites.(mostly overpopulation) Just take film for wht it is, it don't evn hav 2 b abt poor ppl...JUST PPL! I like to look into the eyes and minds of these strangers..

  • varghese, u r right on spot about overpopulation. it is like we cannot stop breeding. every duty of an indian is to breed; that is what the society expects. that is why our quality of living is so bad and we place very low value on life.

  • should cut off the balls of these british directors highlighting poverty situations and exploiting it....they left india in such a sorry state to begin with...and these people who live in these slums chose to do so...i have been to india and there are thousands of opportunities...people just don't care...why not show the beautiful part of india?

  • why ? because you are ashamed of the poor ? face the truth. i am from india and poverty and corruption is its face. u might want to say bollywood and cricket but besides that india has got nothing else to show. time to pull up ur pants and either eliminate poverty or eliminate the people living in property by reducing social subsidies

  • There r othr videos showing those things..R ppl only allowed to make films abt the Palaces, shrines and gold? Ppl who know anything abt India kno tht most of th gold in the world in India!! :) So chill!

  • one more thing. helping the poor in India is Impossible. If India start giving social security for the poor, there will be more jobless people. Only self realization will improve the country.until then we hav to face the prblms we have. there are many other positive things that has to be shown in videos like this,Why poor?Poor is not what India all about. India is the Way of life, India is all about love, relationships, God, Education,Tradition. IF you cant see it in India, you never knew India

  • why criticize the foreign filmmakers when it is the indian filmmakers who should bring out the 'beauty' in india. where are those filmmakers ?...that's right..we only have ridiculous song and dance bollywood filmmakers who rinse and repeat the same formula

  • just a sick video...stop this poverty porn...modern India has so many better images to show than these poor people. and if you're so much touched by their poverty, do something for them rather than showing your creativity by filming and showing to the rest of the world...just plain boring and sad visuals

  • Good photography, boring vid.

  • AMAZING photography, not so great story

  • This had wonderfully beautiful imagery some of the best I have seen on youtube. But I don't think I would considerate this a short film as much as I would see it as a long music video. it had no plot but it had many symbolic images. Also I found the ceaseless concentration on the "birds" really annoying. it can still have symbolic meaning without you having to constantly throw the image in our face. other than that it was a really good music video.

  • though the movie is good. i m sick of watching movies that show poor in India.. as if India is a begging and poor country . FUK u all film makers.. If u got any skills go find what is India is famous for. Understand Why India is Great Country. Think why every India is the proudest human being on earth. then make a movie. we believe in Karma, the person who is not responsible, and don't care about future will end up on roads like the people u shown in the video. and their children tooo.

  • Indian*

  • well your obviously one of those rich upper class snobbish and cold-hearted indians... these people are God's children who you belong to I do not know...

  • India is great! But not everyone is poor just can they messed up in there "past life." Some ppl are abused or bc others take more than they need, and this is true everywhere, it's just that India is sooo big in #s so the amount of destitute ppl is extraordinary.

  • I agree India is a great country. Just as good as any other western country. But for you to assert that the poor of India deserve their condition because of their past lives...that sir makes you an a**hat.

  • hey I agree with you that film makers need to stop showing the poor. Its almost poverty porn.

BUT, i disagree with you that people who are on the roads are "irresponsible". Poverty is not about responsibility. In fact, you could have a job and a family and still be poor.

  • i really don mean in a rude way.. i dont know whether u ever tried to interact with most of the poor people u see on roads. there are many times welfare organizations request them to join schools but they dont. sometime they join and then run away. to be simple many of them chosen it coz they think it is easy way to live. talking about poor, my statement a generalized one. in one way or other irresponsibility is the reason for most of the poverty. good or bad. but it is the reason.

  • While the cinematography/photography of this short was stunning and original, i can't say the subject matter was. I am rather tired of this fixation on the poor of India/Pakistan/Africa. There is more to all of these places, and lest we forget, the Wealthy West has its own faces of hunger, poverty, and desperation. I suppose it's not as exotic though.

  • Comment removed

  • yes we have poor here in usa too. But the thing is, is even a poor person here has a nice toilet and 3 meals a day!! Not true for India or Africa..ppl care about other ppl, if u don't, that's your defect

  • I think my comment pushes the point home that I DO, in fact, care about people. And your comment actually reinforces my point. The thing is, NOT every poor person in the US has running water or even electricity, let alone 3 meals a day. But this way of thinking is perpetuated because filmmakers and members of the media continue their fixation on more exotic locales.

  • ok, i'm sorry, i'm sure u care abt them, but I'm not the one who said tht abt karma, pavancreddi did,nd i was disagreeing. also, ppl in usa tht are poor, may not have electricity or water, but they do have the 3 meals a day, given by red cross and other shelters. nd i'm not a sir, i'm a girl. cheers

  • That was great! Thank you!

  • that girl scared the shit out of me!

  • Amazing Photography..Great Mood..Thank you for sharing this amazing picture

  • Fantastic production! Cheers from Zurich.

  • Remind me Ron Fricke's films (Baraka , and Koyaanisqatsi )
