@PSspecialist Because the MSX2 was a home computer and was made years after the Famicom was released (1983). The Nes Tech was just too outdated that's the problem with consoles they have fixed capabilities. Konami did the best job they could (except for removing the main boss) and captured the feel of the game and the atmosphere as well as converting the music beautifully.
How'd you get this game? I know of the crappy NES version and I hear the Japanese one is the original and not fucked up version (lol). How'd you get this one (being clearly the accurate version but translated)?
And is THIS version going to be in the HD collection? If so...YAY!
You got this emulated? God I wanna play this so much. Right now, the only thing I have accessable to me, is the NES port. And if Kojima-sensei says, "don't play the NES port," then I'm not gonna play it.
@ImaruSama Oh my god, I know right?! Look at Konami's ReBirth series, featuring Castlevania: The Adventure, Contra and Gradius. You'd think they'd have made a Metal Gear ReBirth while they were at it.
I'd love them to make an enhanced remake so I could actually play this game.
Oh, better yet, do what they did with Metroid into Metroid Zero Mission. There's the enhanced remake of the main game, then you unlock the entire complete original MSX version in a mini-game section!
@tokyoking2 Awwww, hey, easy guy, I'm looking forward to Rising :( I'm not the kinda guy who spazzes over one side or the other, "new school versus old school," kinda thing, y'know? I love it all.
I wanna play Rising as much as I'd like to see them remake this.
@ImaruSama Oh my god, I know right?! Remember Konami's ReBirth series, consisting of Castlevania The Adventure, Contra and Gradius? You'd think they'd have made a Metal Gear ReBirth while they were at it. I'd love to see an enhanced remake of Metal Gear, so I could actually play this game.
I just beat the first one for the first time (Metal Gear Solid, that is) in preparation for the collection... why have I waiting until now?? :( It was possibly the greatest game I have ever played... can't wait to play 2,3 and 4. :)
Well, in order to make sense of what some characters say in MGS 1, you need to play Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2. Then play MGS 1 again, and see how much more dialogue makes sense. Then purchase and play MGS 2-4.
was the miller in this game supposed tay be the same miller in peace walker coz if it is he doesnt look like him even though he would be older but also even though that it was liquid in disguise as miller in metal gear solid how did snake not even notice the difference
@TheOpicus You don't even follow AVGN's reviews ASSHOLE. He reviewed the shitty NES version but he said that this one was great. So you know what? Say whatever you want about the NES version (Even Hideo Kojima said that version was bad). But this is epic. Voice acting? Seriously? LOL.
Hey guys, can you please check out my 'MSX: Metal Gear (1987)' walkthrough? It uses the original translation and it is in 480p. It's on my channel. Thank You. =)
@Laurelindo Hey man, use 'BlueMSX' emulator and play the game rom by inserting them into the emulator window, then clicking run. Should work if it's the right one. Check out my Metal Gear (MSX) walkthrough of the original english version... =)
Can anyone help me out how do I save on mg cuz I recently bought a retro duo tht plays nes and snes and I got metal gear but I have no idea how to save
This is a boring game, but I feel like I have to watch because I want to know the whole story. The thing that ruins is that there is no voice acting and the music sucks. Send this to AVGN
do you even have a clue of how much memory voice acting takes?
they only had what?
129Kb to work with?
if they had used voice acting, then they would have had at BEST, 1-2kb for the REST OF THE ENTIRE GAME.
if all you're gonna do is complain about no voice acting, instead of complimenting the phenomenal game-play, you don't deserve to know the rest of the story.
@TheOpicus AVGN has already reviewed the NES version of this game which was indeed, bad, but you have no right to call this one a boring game when you probably haven't even plated it. You don't even deserve to know the story...
@TheOpicus dude i can tell you werent alive back in the late 80s and early 90s. back then games didnt have voice acting, havent you ever played an 8 bit game????
@Draknfyre well still, if the games that dont have voice acting all suck then theres a ton of suckish games out there. i mean seriously, super mario bros 3 didnt suck and i dont see voice acting in it. in fact, voice acting is one of the things that completely ruined the sonic franchise
I wasn't saying that. I was just saying some 8-bit games did have voices. So it wasn't technologically impossible, but it did use a crapload of space. When your average NES game between 128KB-512KB voices had to be incredibly compressed, and sometimes it sounded like crap.
And here I was playing the NES version for 5 years thinking that was the original version. <_< I did know about MSX, but not that they were this different.
This version looks a lot better though, and the music is cooler.
@destroyer3242 Yeah that's a little funny, it would've been more challenging if you had to kill the guards who were in your immediate vicinity or something.
so this is big boss fighting outer heaven, int he the one who created it? on the fourth one liquids always like outer heaven big boss yh man they fucked up
@latexvalentine Main Char. for this game is Solid Snake that Big boss on the start up screen was Solid Snakes commander but he was a traitor who was actually the one pulling the strings in outer heaven its reaaally complicated to explain if you have not played metal gear solid 1 and 3
and Big Boss is A.K.A Naked snake
and Solid Snake is just Solid Snake

@ericorenato88 No, this is the first game which involves the incident in Outer Heaven. And now it just does this infinite loop of the blue MSX title screen thing...Why does it have to be so confusing?.. :(
@johnhassink Ok ok...I've figured out ONE thing. I just downloaded roms of the 2 games from doperoms.com..The one of Metal Gear 2 seems to work...But I'm having problems with Metal Gear 1..Should i download a different copy of it?
@johnhassink Ok that was the problem...I was using Bing to translate the page...which prevented the download from starting..but I got it! And its working now! Thanks ^.^
does anyone know how he gets to outer heaven? does he use a submarine like he did in mgs or a boat or what. it's not like he swimmed all the way there. please respond.
they are vague, big boss rarley picks up the radio 80 percent of the time, they dont tell you the codec calls at all they just say stuff like "call shneider" and i am wondering what the codec is but no, they dont tell you, casue big boss is an evil b@st@ard.
what i mean is like for example when you get to the gas mask room , big boss calls you he says you will need a gas mask, and to ask shcneider , well tell me, what is his frequency number, and when i ment 80 percent of time, i meant that when you are having trouble , and you call him, he doesnt answer, oh thanks big boss for all the help.
and does it matter the diff between codecs and radios
and yes i know what a codec is, i meant the number, sorry

Depending on the version ROM you have,
I guess you'd best go to Options --> Emulation, then set it to "MSX2+",
OR set it to "MSX2" and set the frequency to 60 Hz. This is important for the game and music speed!
Just insert the cartridge image in slot 1 and you should be fine.

I was tryin to play metal gear 1, but somehow ended up pplayin metalg gear 2. then i ended the emulation to try playing metal gear 1. And now it just does this infinite loop of the blue MSX title screen thing...Why does it have to be so confusing?.. :(

@fuzzydude64
A cartridge image is nothing more than the dumped data which was on it, similar to a disk image.
For MSX, the cartridge image always should have the extension ".ROM" or ".MSX".
Metal Gear 1 & 2 are different ROMs.
If you have inserted the correct ROM image and your emulator keeps rebooting, then your copy is probably broken.

@johnhassink Shoot...Do you know where I can pick up the needed files for MG 1 & 2?

@johnhassink Ok ok...I've figured out ONE thing. I just downloaded roms of the 2 games from doperoms.com..The one of Metal Gear 2 seems to work...But I'm having problems with Metal Gear 1..Should i download a different copy of it?
fuzzydude64 1 year ago
@fuzzydude64
Yeah, screw doperoms, srsly.
With the site I told you about you probably never need another one for downloading MSX games.
johnhassink 1 year ago
@johnhassink I went there..and found the game...but I dont know how to download it
fuzzydude64 1 year ago
@fuzzydude64
You clicked on the name?
Then you got to the page with screenshots, more info, etc.
Click the name of the game again and download will start.
johnhassink 1 year ago
@johnhassink Ok that was the problem...I was using Bing to translate the page...which prevented the download from starting..but I got it! And its working now! Thanks ^.^

@fuzzydude64
No problem.
Enjoy!
Go to CheatMSX dot com to download a full map of the game in case you're having trouble.

First, try to contact missing our "Grey Fox."
"I feel asleep!!"
"The Truck have started to move!"
Just some examples of Metal Gear's NES failure of a translation.

@sanchez1560510 aaah!! Ok, sorry, but I knew only that version, where i can find it? can you say me please =3?
Rokubi610 2 years ago
Because the MSX was created by Hideo Kojima(the original creator of the metal gear series till nowadays) , but the NES was NOT made by him.

the thing i dont like about this is that they vaguley tell you what to do, and when you try to call someone on the radio, they dont pick up , WTF ?
a1ez11 2 years ago
Have you ever played the Japanese of this game or even the released version on Disc 2 of 'Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence' ?
filipeflower03 2 years ago
yes , yes i have, Disc 2:persistence
a1ez11 2 years ago
Then you should also realize that they are not so "vague" in that version.
filipeflower03 2 years ago
they are vague, big boss rarley picks up the radio 80 percent of the time, they dont tell you the codec calls at all they just say stuff like "call shneider" and i am wondering what the codec is but no, they dont tell you, casue big boss is an evil b@st@ard.
a1ez11 2 years ago
#1- Define "80 percent of the time".
#2- Those weren't Codecs, those were just radios. In fact, first you say radio, but after that, you say codec?
#3- They do explain what a Codec is in 'Metal Gear Solid'.
filipeflower03 2 years ago
what i mean is like for example when you get to the gas mask room , big boss calls you he says you will need a gas mask, and to ask shcneider , well tell me, what is his frequency number, and when i ment 80 percent of time, i meant that when you are having trouble , and you call him, he doesnt answer, oh thanks big boss for all the help.
and does it matter the diff between codecs and radios
and yes i know what a codec is, i meant the number, sorry
a1ez11 2 years ago 2
Well, if you first say "radio" but then you say "codec", then the difference must matter.
