i remember when this came on i was in the 4th grade and me and my friends were so excited. now that im older i listen to the elder a lot its more a grown up album lol. awesome song
That's true - that is what was wrong with it - A lot of the fans were just too young to get it. I was around 13 when it came out, and it wasn't until I listened to it a few years ago and I was floored at how great of an album it really is. I mean, lyrically, with "The Oath" and "Just A Boy", they were treading into Ronnie James Dio territory in many ways.
Thanks for the footage, The Elder is the best progessive metal recordings ever, in a league with Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime and Dream Theatre's Metropolis
The Elder gets such a bad rap...This is great stuff...they should have gone on the road, playing small places...kinda surprising that Gene and Paul have next to apologized for it over the years...it has great tunes on it, bring Ace and Ezrin back. That would be a trip.
Throughout the years I have always noticed that every time that Stanley has trouble hitting a note he will look down at his guitar. Just watch...he does it.
This is too cool! I love to see some of the more obscure Kiss classics performed live! Always liked this song, so awesome to see a performance of it. Thx
When ACE, heard it for the first time, he smashed the tape against the wall. Reason: His solos, were cut out. Overall: Bob Ezrin, was a complete dick to Ace.
This is such an underrated klassic. I've always viewed Eric as the heir to the stool, and this is proof as to why he will always be the Fox. Singer and Thayer really REALLY need to find their own personal character. It's such an embarrassment to see them parading as Ace and Peter. Eric did. Vinnie did. Why not these two? I know $immon$ needs more money to burn, but jesus. If they give Peter and Ace their 25% cut, fair, then they'll make more than they have so far with the two impostors!
I agree with throatgorge2. There is no doubt that Ace's solo here was cut from the album. I wish KISS would release a deluxe edition of this album in 2011 for the Elder's 30th anniversary with the original tracks (w/ Ace's solo's) as a bonus disc.
It's a damn shame this line up didn't record together (unless you count Dark Light, but Escape from the Island was Ace, Eric with Bob Ezrin on base). Luckily there's some live footage like this around.
Paul Can't hit the notes on the Chorus, and Ik this song is horrible to sing. But gene is singing higher then paul lol thats funny. Great job by ace N Eric
a true kiss fan in tasmania, australia is the one and only damian hind. the biggest kiss fan in hobart. fly down people and check it out. the beer is great too
Ace's solo is fantastic. When I listen to the studio version I realize this is one of the solos Ezrin cut out! You hear only the opening measures of it on the studio version! Wow, I'd have quit the band too. Also that is Ace's coolest stage outfit ever and him and Eric Carr are the only ones whose hair looks GOOD. Ace will always make my jaw drop, to be such and outstanding musician among such brilliant musicians is a hell of an accomplishment. He's awesome...
They should do some of the elder. Eric and Tommy can play the whole album...but Gene and Paul? I think they see it as it did not sell as much so why should we play it. But it has some of the best musicianship ever from Kiss.
I last saw KISS in 2004 and what made that tour so good was that they actually dove into their catalog a bit. Yes "Kiss Alive!" is a classic and yes it should be featured as the definitive party live album and I am sick of death of nearly every song on it because that's all they seem to want to play live. If they would bring songs like this back or "Heart of Chrome" from an album which they all say is among their best, then maybe they will earn my hard earned money and I'll see them again.
MAN ERIC CARR was a DRUMMER and a HALF ,he gave KISS that double bass metallic attack ,he was so technical ,he hits everything .AWESOME drummer one of the BEST!!!REST IN PEACE BROTHER OF METALXXXOOO
@twostix67 Dude anything thats classic stuff, memorable & still gives you tingles whenever you hear it such as early KISS among others,as a true metalhead that I am all my COMPLIMENTS come from the bottom of my heart.CAN"T help but show respect, all the best on your KISS tribute band.KEEP WELL,CHEERZZZ!!!!
Man this song is so fucking heavy, one of their heavier tracks,LUV theriff very gallopy,It's an early version of a thrash RIFF& at the same time very very melodic so the first time you hear it just grabs& doesn't let go.This live version is outta this WORLD,the solos are longer than that of the album,FUCK wish they kept the shredding at this duration on the album. The elder is such a unique album from start to finish even the instrumental 'escape from the island',awesome STUFF!!METAL PIONEERZ!!!
The Elder is like an orgasm. It is a great masterpiece and one of the best Kiss albums than fans usually don´t like. I love "Only you", "Under the rose", "I", and "The odyssey". Fantastic job!! We will never forget the "hidden albums". From Spain, I kick lots of asses in the name of KISS.
I must agree with you! I don't know why even Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley themselves still today say "The Elder" was their worst musical mistake. This album was different, magical... "Just a Boy", "Odyssey", "I", "The Oath" , "Escape from the Island", and "Under the Rose", my favorites. The only mistake (if any) was not to put their awesome makeup-on faces on the record cover.
I don't know what reasons Gene and Paul have for dismissing this album. Really. Do they prefer HITS, Dynasty, Unmasked, Psycho Circus?!?!?!?! Yeah, you could call this the worst album Bob Ezrin produced for them, but you're not always going to get a Revenge or Destroyer. Cmon Guys one more album with Bobby! Please!!!!!!!!!!
...KISS. This was a great era. A hint of their early hard rock years....love gun, dynasty and unmasked is all pop..."The Elder', was back to the guitar sound...raw!
i agree i love eric carr. in matter of fact i live in the same town where eric grew up and his parents still live in the same town and i met them twice. very nice people they are
What's hilarious is the fact that Paul Stanley is singing all these "serious" lyrics about swords, destiny and power, and he keeps doing all his signature moves with his hips and hands. It just doesn't fit like it does with Strutter or Love Gun.
2:34 Ace's solo was so bad it's almost embarassing! I remember back in '82 being so stoked that KISS was gonna be on Fridays! The Oath started out so strong and bombastic, I was expecting a strong solo from Ace..and he absolutely SUCKED! He sounded like some beginner kid at the guitar shop..Daddy's buyin' him his first guitar for Christmas. UGH! JFYI, on the album it's Paul playing the fills.
@matzohgoy - As much as we all hate to admit it, by this stage, Ace had given up being in KISS and was just doing a rote job, copycatting HIMSELF. He was given space to solo purely to establish KISS were back as "hard rockers". You can see he didn't wanna. And yes, Paul did the fills on ELDER's Oath.
I saw this Friday's episode. There was a "Rubik's Cube" game show skit, in which celebrities were placed in each of cube's squares. KISS was in top left corner. After a contestant answered a question right, they took a twist on a small rubik's cube that would then twist the huge celebrities' cube. KISS fell from about 25 ft when the cube twisted. It was very funny. All members were good sports in participating and making fun of themselves.
I'm a kissfan for years and now I see this video, I notice that they do'nt wear their platform boots.I gues that the guitarsolo on the album is done by another guitarplayer.
Ace is playin'something completely different in this video.
At 00:55 sec.'s FUCK GENE'S HEAD. 02:28 Get out of Ace's way Gene. 03:30 could a stage please push Gene down on his face:( 04:04 That's it I'm killing Gene! SCHMUCK!!!!!
Awe Gene, Gene, Gene... Stop the tongue bullshit. He's is the reason I've never got into KISS for years until lately. Lyrically this album is a work of art. I just sorry that Ace was shunned on the Destroyer album by the Producer, and then by the same Producer for this album. Ace disagreed with the bands directional turn, and this Produce removed some of Ace's solo's on both albums. Now if Ace wears his make up, he'll get sued by Gene, and Paul.
this is the kind of song your children will never hear. not because they were born after the KISS phenomenon, but because it's simply a really, really poorly written song.
Actually, they lyrics are absolutely outstanding. Very, very well written. It was the ALBUM itself that was misguided. People wanted to KISS to rock, not become philosopher-poets. But give credit where it's due. Lyrically, the song is fantastic.
Boy, KISS really rocks on The Oath. I will always feel that Elder will be treated as a throwaway, but now, if you listen to it today, it's really a good album. I feel it was just ahead of its time.
