There's only 1 Northern White rhino left in the Czech republic left after today's news. That makes a total of 5 left on the planet: 1 in the Czech republic, 4 in Kenya and none in the wild. Maybe that will dampen the humor of posted comments on this video.

More depressing news: 1) Scientists now think the Northern White rhino is a separate species, 2) cloning has failed.

From what I recall Rhinos are hunted for their horns due to superstition in Asian medicine. I love rhinos, so laid back until threatened. Just one question, how do we know for a fact they have poor eye sight?

@SocomWeapon Good question. It is interesting that we are told birds have great eyesight, skunks don't, and so on..i guess researchers have looked at the eye structure of certain wildlife. Rangers will tell you, that the rhino will often smell or hear you before they can see you. That is most likely from the guides experience walking around in Africa.

The vast lands are shrinking. Just like any where else in the world, the human population is expanding and taking up a lot of land. Many of these animals live on parks that are now fenced in or have other borders. It is a shame that sometimes even with in these parks, conservancys, private lands etc.. that poaching still takes place. Thanks for watching!

Great question. Poachers want to get in and out and sell the horn to their dealers. So they usually shoot/kill the rhino and only chop off the horn. When they are legally killed by trophy hunters, the meat can be consumed.

I wish to share your view on the recovery and protection, but sadly I know that it will be a long time yet before we can realistically say so. Firstly the demand/mindset behind the healing properties etc for the horn must be corrected. Secondly, Africa, where the Rhino truly belongs, is politically unstable, Zimbabwe was about the most stable place, now look at it, and now look at what it has done to the Rhino population there.
