Brava!!!!!! Just brilliant!!! Beautifully played. ....Whenever Rachmaninov is played on the piano, it's an awesome moment. But when strings are added, also, it's .just overwhelmingly wonderful.
What style, what discipline, what a wonderful clip. My heart is filled with joy at watching this wonderful artist present this work -- I feel she as playing it specially for me. My heart is full! Thank you, Thank you...
One of the best Finale's I've ever heard. She has the "goods" to pull this off in grand style. And it doesn't hurt to have one of the best Rachmaninoff pianists in the world (Pletnev) on the podium. I just hope once in my lifetime I will hear live the orchestra and soloist finish in perfect syncronization. This is probably the most difficult of the standard repertoire concertos to do this--invariably the last ten chords between them are off at some point. Only Cliburn manages to do it.
This last movement, Alla breve is just...a combination of all themes...and its truly fantastic..could be soundtrack for any major film in cinema industry.. Just...Just...nothing is perfect, but this conccerto, is perfect
At the end, Hae-Sun Paik is really trying to milk the theme for all it's worth in terms of subtle expressive rubato. Unfortunately, she was obviously never able to get Pletnev to go along with it. But see how she makes the piano "sing" at 13:06 as she instinctively provides vibrato with her right hand, which of course is impossible. It shows how her mind conceives the soaring Rachmaninov melody as if for soprano voice, a beautiful expression of her imagination in her technique.
@DarwinIsInCharge She plenty of balls, if you must use such a sexist anachronism, not least of all for playing the entire 3rd movement when so many pianists settle for half or less of it...
You'll know you're practicing it correctly when you break a piano string or when your nails start bleeding. Just read up on Anton Rubinstein's advice on Russian piano. Perhaps it's me, but even the climax felt weak.
@tchykovsky I understand the importance of practice and the intensity of most Russian piano, but doesn't breaking a piano string seem a bit extreme? I've had pains during practices, but can't imagine actually damaging a piano by it O.o
Yeah, her fingers are too rigid and tight. That's why the piano is barely getting any sound out. You can tell Mr. Pletnev wasn't happy. All the Russian passion felt so lost... *sigh*
@spactick No. I'm not joking. It's a Russian National Orchestra and they go to tour Korea. They probably wanted the Korean artist to play to gather more attention and audience members to make money. Better question would be, why is Mikhail Pletnev not playing and conducting? He plays a much more spectacular Rachmaninoff. Pletnev looking happy would be him giving the pianist a huge hug.

@3NZZ0GRI3F Listen to Horowitz playing Rachmaninoff Sonata No. 2 or listen to Rachmaninoff playing. There is a huge dynamic contrast.
