Hi there, yeah, I really rate this guitar for the money. It sets up great, has very good pickups (Texas Specials), and produces some lovely tones (clean tones especially). This is the guitar I take when I go to the practice studio to play with my friends, because it's so versatile. A great workhorse.

I'm using just a Boss GT-pro and recording through an M-Audio Firewire solo interface into an apple imac. If you want to record direct you'll need something that has an amp simulator otherwise you'll need to mic up an amp or something. Recording direct from just effects gives pretty harsh/poor results.

Definitely John Petrucci. He's got some unique phrasing and note choice. Not all people like him, but he's my favorite. Check out "Wishful Thinking" and "Glasgow Kiss" from his solo album, then try some of his Dream Theater stuff.

Not using any dist/overdrive from the effects section of the GT pro. All distortion comes from the pre-amp section. The pre-amp model I'm using is a model of a MESA/Boogie Dual Rectifier. Gain turned way up.

May I ask exactly how you hardtailed this? I have the exact same guitar and have 3 teem springs in but have the claw screwed in enough so the bridge sits almost flush with the body. Should I add more springs?

I added an extra 2 springs (taking it to 5). I use quite light strings so the bridge is right back on the body and doesn't move at all. I would add the extra springs, it's an easy way to shut down the trem.

No worries, comments are always welcome. This guitar keeps impressing me too. The pickups are really chunky and powerful. On this vid I held back on the delay and reverb, as a result you can really hear the punch that the pickups have.

Many thanks, good question! The strat I'm playing in the vid was the first maple neck guitar I'd ever played or owned since I started playing guitar at age 12, in 1989. I have to say that I do prefer maple. I find other fretboards totally fine to play on though. Just, maple has a bit of an edge for me.
