If I am correct this movie was considered lost until the early eighties when it was rediscoverd (about the same time Bare Foot Gen was released).

Wonderful, Absolutely amazing the pioneering of anime in such a cute film, too bad i have no idea what they are say, but you can get the picture. beautiful
@KrossVixen I think the spider's trying to entice the ladybird into relaxing in his hammock, but it seems to me either she doesn't trust him (maybe a "don't talk to strangers" message here?) or else she can't fly that high. My money's on the former.
I guess this was never translated to English...only disappointed because I'm lousy with foreign languages, took Spanish for two years and can't remember half of what I learned. Oh well, I've got a friend who's a huge fan of Japan, Anime and culture and such, and she's studying Japanese so maybe she can translate it for me later. Either way, I believe she'd really like this cartoon. I think it's good even though I can't really understand it.
For everyone shouting "OMG that's spider's black!", no shit sherlock. Many spiders are black-colored. Not only that, I believe that it plays on a common theme in old cartoons.
If you look at villains in old cartoons, many of them are wearing all black or are black-colored (not race). Same goes for this spider. It indicates that he's the antagonist. Many villains also have deep voices.
Plus, the spider is the most charming character in this cartoon!
It's a Masterful piece, everything goes together so well. The characters are memorable and easily identifiable as the role had envisioned. Casting is so perfect, the voice arrangements so well composed and coupled with such whimsical and at the right moments thrilling musical backings. The seemingly childlike perception this piece offers is both universal in language and in audience appeal, as it really offers a naturalistic fairy tale that anyone could understand progressively. Youtube treasure
13:02 is awesome, that shot/part and attention to detail for just one second of the film.. I mean, I know that's what makes great animation, but .. it looks so good!

This cartoon is famous, and was, in fact, made in 1943, at the height of the war.
I guess Director Kenzo Masaoka, still just wanted to entertain children with a cute little story.
This apparently angered the Japanese military authorities, precisely because it was the only film produced during the war years that was NOT a propaganda piece. (Good for you, Mr. Masaoka. RIP)
This just doesn't look like something made during the war. It's kinda cute, and animation style is cruder (yet prettier) than the stuff from the war years.
Seems to be more the early to mid-30s era. (IMHO)
I'd have to agree with "drakkonami's" assessment of the spider. (Maybe an Al Jolson parody?) The difference being the racist depiction of blacks in the US was most often as silly "minstrel clowns" as opposed to their being truly evil.
I see a lot of comments about the spider, and I have to admit the depiction is at the very least promoting xenophobia. Just because many Japanese hadn't come into contact with black people at the time doesn't mean that these sorts of depictions wouldn't influence cultural encounters in the future, and I think they have. Granted, this is to a great extent the fault of American racism and cultural colonialism. With these stipulations I've enjoyed the beauty that was indeed there...

i thought that the cartoon was rascist was first cuz the spider was black but then at the end, the bee, fly, or whatever it was was also black so i guess not. anyhoo, great cartoon for children.
Surely one must realize that Cybord 009 featured a similar approach when depicting the black member. Also, there are a lot of borderline black face characters still being made. I often wonder how the Japanese view blacks today.
The ladybug is adorable. Too bad the visuals are so poor that I was not able to take a snapshot of her. And yep, that spider looked like Al Jolson...interesting. Nice singing voice though.^^)

I believe the implicit themes were probably more explicit in the eyes of Japanese citizens during WWII. It's similar to the way a political cartoon published in your daily newspaper uses symbolism (although frankly those cartoonists are a lot clumsier at it). Propaganda can use symbolism the way this cartoon did if it is understood by the target audience.
Though I suppose you would have to be native of Japan living in 1943 to be absolutely sure of this cartoon's intentions.

I've seen this video about four times now. I believe it is a propaganda film. Every time I see that spider, it reminds me of a black caricature of Bing Crosby, hat and pipe included. Also, note the singing style of spider definitely non oriental style. The lady bug is a cute little character. Her hairstyle is definitely America mid 20s though. Overall, a nicely drawn cartoon. Thank you for a very interesting, to say the least, post.
can someone please help? when i was in japan in a film museum, i saw a film about an origami fox and mole singing their way to a house. it was in colour. does anyone know this cartoon?
Is it a little kid or a woman singing the ladybird's lines? Where exactly did Japan get their plethora of talented singing children in the 1940's (thinking this, Momotaro Umi no Shinpei, even back into the 30's with Fox and Badger)
I like this short it shows alot of work in the early stages of the film, panning to the right or leftfocus out of focus all things you would expect to find in a real life action film. The fact that it is an animation is very thrilling. Something else that should be noted, this film reminds me of fantasa, watch it agian and ask yourself did ol'walt plagerize?????
No question that the spider symbolises a black man, the hands did that clear for me. However, I don't give a shit they can make whatever cartoons they like fuck this global policestateworld.
Masaoka was one of the giants of early Japanese animation, and this is probably his greatest work. Setting aside the racist portrayal (which was a direct Western import that had no profound meaning in Japan), one remarkable aspect of this film that set it apart from other animation of the same period is that there isn't even a hint of war propaganda. Thanks to miniTAIYAKI for posting it. (If you like this, you can see more old anime on my channel.)
Japanese old anime had a great deal of atmosphere.beautidul song,a look,a sense of season etc. I'm glad that nowadays japanese anime is popular whole world, though these anime lack of something.
Exactly, and if I were Chinese, Japanese, or Indian, I'd be pissed off too.
And, "Harmless Stereotyping"?
Harmless?
HARMLESS!!!?
There have been tons and tons of issues over a race of people being drawn stereotypically.
For example, Jynx (from Pokemon), those Japanese people in that Bugs Bunny cartoon, Mr. Popo (from Dragonball, although I didn't mind him that much). You just don't know how it feels because your.....uh....nah, I won't go there.
Ha, well if I were white, I'd be offended. My only guess for white people being fine with it, is because they've treated other races so badly for some many years, I guess it's pay back or something. I could be wrong. Still, if I were white and some black guy called me a cracker, I'd be offended. I guess that's just how I am...
WHOA WHOA WHOA!!! You're white and you called a black guy a nigger?? Are you ok? Did they beat you up? Are they gonna beat you up? When you're walking home, I'd be careful if I were you. Because you might get jumped...
Haha, are you serious? No, they were pussies and talkers, all of them, they're not cool, only hiphop gangster wannabes, the black punkrocker I know he has more guts than them.
This producer does not have the intention of the racial discrimination.
However, as for these cartoon, it was not got the recommendation of the Education Ministry because the then Japanese Government thought about the same thing.
For those interested, I did a quick capture of the soundtrack and split it up into 7 mp3s. I'm sharing it on soulseek right now. Just search "Kumo to churippu".
I find it amusing that so many comments are based purely on conjecture.
You people are assuming up the wazoo!
No one will ever know what it was truly based on
Get off your damn soap boxes people!

For Japanese, theirs enemy was U.S. and U.K. white men. The war was a battle between white people's world and Japan.
Also, In 1943, the number of black people fighting in Pacific Battlefront was very little.
Black people was not enemy but not friend.
If director had wanted to express his enemy, he would have used a charactor with red or pink face.
But he didn't.
That black color spider is just a symbol of baddie.
(Even today, some baddies are wearing with dark color costume.)

Also, note the singing style of spider definitely non oriental style. The lady bug is a cute little character. Her hairstyle is definitely America mid 20s though. Overall, a nicely drawn cartoon. Thank you for a very interesting, to say the least, post.

Was the black spider related to some anti-American propaganda?
7omnia7 3 years ago
Probably. The popular image of an American in the Fascist countries was that of a stereotypical black man.

Is it a little kid or a woman singing the ladybird's lines? Where exactly did Japan get their plethora of talented singing children in the 1940's (thinking this, Momotaro Umi no Shinpei, even back into the 30's with Fox and Badger)
JFMello1116 3 years ago
The spider wearing a blackface, interesting.
Elvuz 3 years ago
The bee that saves the ladybird in the end is black. And it has even the same exaggerated spider's big-lips, hasn't it?

I like this short it shows alot of work in the early stages of the film, panning to the right or leftfocus out of focus all things you would expect to find in a real life action film. The fact that it is an animation is very thrilling. Something else that should be noted, this film reminds me of fantasa, watch it agian and ask yourself did ol'walt plagerize?????
heathersmelody 3 years ago
Fantasia was released in 1940 (three years before this cartoon), so...no?

No question that the spider symbolises a black man, the hands did that clear for me. However, I don't give a shit they can make whatever cartoons they like fuck this global policestateworld.

this, vs steamboat willie. I think this wins by a mile, even if i only understand about a quarter of it.

I'm glad that nowadays japanese anime is popular whole world, though these anime lack of something.

pulzar:
This cartoon is racist and is 'of its time'. But, racism has not gone away its just as bad, with a subtler approach.
When you deny someone work, education or a promotion based on their colour, they can't punch you in the face. The law protects you.
'Political correctness' is to protect good ppl, against having to punch u in the face!
We need 'political correctness', because there are, still, many ppl who genuinely believe that paler skin confers an intrinsic superiority.

Because it's racist...
KirbyPhelpsPK 3 years ago
So black people playing the bad guys in modern action movies is racist as well ?
It would have been fine for the spider to be any other race accept for black ?
People take political correctness way too far...
Pulzar 3 years ago 8
No I'm talking about the way he looks. Big eyes, huge lips, overly dark skin, that nose. Ever heard of "black face"?
KirbyPhelpsPK 3 years ago
They also do this with chinese people and indians in modern american cartoons, never heard anyone complain about those.
Big nose, narrow eyes... it's just some harmless stereotyping.
Pulzar 3 years ago
Exactly, and if I were Chinese, Japanese, or Indian, I'd be pissed off too.
And, "Harmless Stereotyping"?
Harmless?
HARMLESS!!!?
There have been tons and tons of issues over a race of people being drawn stereotypically.
For example, Jynx (from Pokemon), those Japanese people in that Bugs Bunny cartoon, Mr. Popo (from Dragonball, although I didn't mind him that much). You just don't know how it feels because your.....uh....nah, I won't go there.
KirbyPhelpsPK 3 years ago
Asians and black people also portray caucasians in a stereotypical way, I for one don't give a living shit.
Black people call white people crackers, the chinese world for white man literaly means "longnose". Why should I be offended by that ?
Pulzar 3 years ago 4
Ha, well if I were white, I'd be offended. My only guess for white people being fine with it, is because they've treated other races so badly for some many years, I guess it's pay back or something. I could be wrong. Still, if I were white and some black guy called me a cracker, I'd be offended. I guess that's just how I am...
KirbyPhelpsPK 3 years ago
I'd be ofended too, I call every black man calling me cracker nigger, they had it coming, themselves to blame.
Imhornydadcomeinside 3 years ago
WHOA WHOA WHOA!!! You're white and you called a black guy a nigger?? Are you ok? Did they beat you up? Are they gonna beat you up? When you're walking home, I'd be careful if I were you. Because you might get jumped...
KirbyPhelpsPK 3 years ago
Haha, are you serious? No, they were pussies and talkers, all of them, they're not cool, only hiphop gangster wannabes, the black punkrocker I know he has more guts than them.
Imhornydadcomeinside 3 years ago 2
This producer does not have the intention of the racial discrimination.
However, as for these cartoon, it was not got the recommendation of the Education Ministry because the then Japanese Government thought about the same thing.
yamahaelectone 3 years ago
For those interested, I did a quick capture of the soundtrack and split it up into 7 mp3s. I'm sharing it on soulseek right now. Just search "Kumo to churippu".

I love this cartoon. The great thing is, I'm in Japan right now. Day six of 35. First flight out of Canada.
By the way, this cannot be war propaganda. The war ended in 1945 August. This cartoon was made in 1947 as the title states.
