F1 is ok, but they should loosen up the rules a little bit, this should make things just a little more interesting:-) Sportscar/endurance/GT racing used to be the best of them all - real roadcars(well, yes, supercars actually:-) ).
The main problem with LMP cars today is that Audi and Peugeot have managed to lobby better rules(less restrictions) for diesel cars.

Dario won two seasons in a row, only he had a break in between. He'd have won one way or another. He has a huge chance to win his third championship this year. His year of NASCAR didn't have any difference in that except for him winning one less championship.
There are many skills that each series have, Nascar is mainly drafting, and being able to move best in traffic. You have the F1 series that has drafting, not as much traffic as for the cars usually do a single file line through the corners, and the skill to do the best line possible through out the corners. With the you have multiple techniques used for overtaking and such. Nascar would only be better if you could do it yourself. F1 you would need massive training but is more fun to watch.

When was the last time you saw any of those you listed on TV? How hard do those sanctioning bodies work on promoting those series you mentioned? No really. The reason 'stock car' racing is called stock car is because once those 'stock cars' were very close to being stock. The technology they used on the track made its way to the street. Today the australians and europeans have their version of true stock car racing. American auto manufacurers have to go overseas. To hell with F1, Indy, etc.

Great job Leo, this was a really fantastic episode it's great to see you on for more than a minute or so especially explaining the technical aspects of racing in a way that isn't drawling. question: what is that "T" shaped thing that sits above the air intake above the drivers head in an F1 car? i've been wondering for some time.
I too had trouble finding info. But, I think / recall the T is the Camera Mount every car has to carry because in early camera days, Benetton [I think] discovered an aero advantage. So, F1 standardized it for all to carry.
Same with the nose mounts, every car should have those little black winglets up front. New postion for 2010.
Also, the roll bar T is color-coded [red for number 1 driver, yellow for the 2 guy]. Time to see if Rosberg is red or yellow [Y, right?].
I love NASCAR but I've always wanted to see them actually race stock cars and not race cars... I mean, their cars don't even look like the cars they're supposed to represent. They also need to race in road races and circuits.
Let's hope they can make NASCAR into something with appeal, right now it's just pack racing & does nothing for me. If they take a page out of Aussie V8 Supercars, that will prick some ears up. Throw some right turns into the mix too, what the hey!

Indy Cars and F1 Cars look very much alike to me. But like Leo said it is the details that matter and make the difference. It is too bad that when the cars fly by you at 150+MPH that you cannot see those details and in the blur and an Indy car looks like an F1 Car.

Oh no, by "underpowered crap" I wasn't referring to small cars.
I meant big cars with small engines, like the later Chevrolet Impalas and Pontiac Grand Prix (I own a 6th gen GP, and I love it to pieces, but it's so SLOW!).
No, I think Nascar moving towards four bangers wouldn't be a bad idea at all, as long as they were using real production cars. It'd be awesome to see the Cobalt SS going head to head with the Dodge Caliber S/T.

I could still go for a couple of circle races for heritage but I'm just saying mix it up and I'll start watching Nascar I actually like watching 70s and 80s Nascar because they are built on real cars.

Great job Leo, this was a really fantastic episode it's great to see you on for more than a minute or so especially explaining the technical aspects of racing in a way that isn't drawling. question: what is that "T" shaped thing that sits above the air intake above the drivers head in an F1 car? i've been wondering for some time.

I too had trouble finding info. But, I think / recall the T is the Camera Mount every car has to carry because in early camera days, Benetton [I think] discovered an aero advantage. So, F1 standardized it for all to carry.
Same with the nose mounts, every car should have those little black winglets up front. New postion for 2010.
Also, the roll bar T is color-coded [red for number 1 driver, yellow for the 2 guy]. Time to see if Rosberg is red or yellow [Y, right?].

I love NASCAR but I've always wanted to see them actually race stock cars and not race cars... I mean, their cars don't even look like the cars they're supposed to represent. They also need to race in road races and circuits.

Let's hope they can make NASCAR into something with appeal, right now it's just pack racing & does nothing for me. If they take a page out of Aussie V8 Supercars, that will prick some ears up. Throw some right turns into the mix too, what the hey!
Great info on the F1 details, BTW. The diffuser news is interesting. Used to subscribe to RaceCar Engineering but the overseas subscription was way pricey. Good rag though - but I prefer Leo's S.D. highlights nowadays.

Indy Cars and F1 Cars look very much alike to me. But like Leo said it is the details that matter and make the difference. It is too bad that when the cars fly by you at 150+MPH that you cannot see those details and in the blur and an Indy car looks like an F1 Car.

There needs to be more open wheeled racers with no front or rear wings, the look is much better, and it sorta harkens back to the days of the "cigar" style bodied open wheelers.
