I can never hear my A string when I try to play this, and I can hear your's perfectly.... I wish I had the money to get one of those Wal basses... If you can find the time you should redo this one in HD
why is everyone shitting on this guy, he's really really good, he admitts this is not his best video, go watch his cover ov Jambi or schism the tell me hes not very good. if your gonna start shitting on someone who can play bass really well and have the guts to post online when you dicks probably cant play smoke on the water.
Its amazing to me that you figured this tune out almost a year after the record came out and Im sure it was by ear cause Tool barely has any official tabs.
Also I caught Tool this past summer and I was kind of taken a back by how bright Justins bass tone was live...i actually think ilike your tone better if that makes sense?
Song Length: 11 minutes- One of the longer tool songs. Third eye clocks in at 13 min but has far more ambient sections where the bass does not play.
Amount of Notes: The bass is plays triplet patterns for 7 minutes straight let alone the rest of the song. If you have ever done anything like Philip Glass, you know how difficult it is to remain consistent on the same pattern for long periods of time.
Speed: The speed isn't the difficult aspect of this song.
Rythym and Positional Complexity: There are decently challenging riffs later in the song when maynard is singing "Hey, oh, Hey, oh" or something to that effect. The counting isn't straight, but I don't remember the exact count. It's not terribly difficult, but again the song isn't difficult because of the speed or hand position.
Really the song is the most difficult tool song because of the concentration needed to maintain...
perfect tempo for well over 7 minutes playing the same arpeggio patterns. That requires a great deal of concentration and stamina. When you put other tool songs in perspective they may have harder bass parts in them, but not for anywhere nearly as long.
My cred: BA in Double Bass Performance- Crane School of Music. Peace and thanks for the question.
First of all, thanks so so much for the great job. You're my "Tool-bass-bible"! :-)
Anyway, as you said, this is the way JC plays this song live, but on the record it seems kinda different. In the starting riff, are you sure, the empty A string has to be played like that? Thanks again! :)
hey Brad, on your tab it says to use delay for the "its time now, my time now..." riffs but i cant hear it in this video. i notcied the delay settings for Rosetta Stoned are the same as Jambi, is it the same for this?
I just started learning this too, I put my ring and pinky on the underside of the pickup to get leverage, kind of like a tug bar on an old fender. don't know if it's bad technique or not but it helps me.
honestly bro there aren't any tricks, just keep at it, if you can't get the up and down at the same time, then just do the up putting the top string in every so often till it gets comfortable and practice the top on its own, I dunno some people have it come naturally and others have to work at it
My friend, I will admit that I don't play that well in the video. After all I always played bass with a pick. However you are incorrect. I highly suggest you check my tab out on tooltabs(dot)net. It is correct and you are incorrect. I sat 4th row in front of Justin at a concert and watched with with a perfect view. He even sits down to play it.
Great job. This is one of the most difficult songs on bass from Tool and you do it incredibly well. Also your tab is really well done. Thanks a bunch.
Sorry I didn't get back to this earlier: Difficulty can be expressed in several ways: Literally the amount of notes played (Stamina), Length of the Song (Stamina), Speed of the passage (Dexterity), Rythmic Complexity (how much subdividing do I have to count in my head) and Positional Complexity (Interval Leaps and Chord Positions)
@lemmenkainen I'll be honest, I don't even remember what my post was towards you much less when haha. But you've got a good explanation going on this song so I won't argue whatever it was
just a random question, but does Justin play this song on a fretless? I thought so due to the low to no fret noise in the song, but I'm not 100% sure.
This is a beautiful song, and you've helped me a lot with playing tool songs - both your videos which are clear and accurate, and your link to the tool tabbing site, which is also accurate and clear :)
I've played finger bass a bit before, but no more than two fingers at once - starting to learn this song has reminded me of the beauty of the bass. Thanks :)
I play this in different way ;p Soon I will add my version of this track so look at this if you don't mind :) That's very good! By ear or learned from tabs?
klutz14, your like the biggest asshole in the world. I use a pick to play tool! and brad is great and is trying to help people!!!!! he's helped me soooooo much! so unless your here to help bass players, get the fuck off youtube and get a life!
ok so I noticed your strumming changes throughout the intro. i know the 3rd part of the intro is hitting the strings individually. What about the other 2 parts? are you plucking the D/G at the same time after hitting the open A?
oh la la Julia!!! wait a min.. is Julia the one who cam running in at the end of the lost keys-Rosetta stoned video where cops came in?!?! lolololololololololol!!!
He's here for bassists like me. He's here to give a helping hand for those bassists who can't quite get a grip on certain songs, such as this one. I'm one of those bassists who look to this man here when I think I can't play it, and he helps me tremendously. It's little nit-picking pricks like you who ruin it for us.
yeah and i have a question for you, why do you get on youtube, watch videos only to pass a dim-witted comment? Why do you try to start shit over the internet, are you that much of a lonely, basement-dwelling virgin? Get a life and stop ridiculing people that have more talent than you could ever posses. And another question, why do you play bass? You're obv. not a musician if you critisize the work of others and have no respect for music and ellow bassists in general.
no prob. dude i HIGHLY respect what you do. Im not liek the other kiss asses on here either, Justin's my biggest insipiration on bass and watching what you do amazes me. I envy a lot of the shit you and Justin both posses. Keep postin vids man, you by far excel over any one of these idiots on here, there's a reason you are on the official band website. I use my finger on some music especially jazz. I was just making a statement when i said no one uses a pick. Btw your the newb stop giving tool a bad name....
lol..and how do I do that? By being nice enough to show people how to play the songs on bass? Seems pretty selfless to me.... for the record there is a big difference between "no one uses a pick" and "no jazz players use a pick". You weren't just making a statement dude that is a big statement that would piss a lot of great bassists off.
i think ur just too jealous that brad has a wal, and u dont, wat are they on ebay 2 to 4 thousand $, get a grip, and stfu, nothing wrong playing with a pick, wat would u say if i played with my fingers with a guitar not bass
You get the award for the most retarded comment ever. No one uses picks? Justin Chancellor from Tool uses a pick on every song except this one. There are many great bassists who play with a pick you friggen noob.
Lucai is also a much better finger style player than I am. However, Lucai's is not accurate....mine is. (Meaning how Justin plays it.) However, in my many discussions with Luke he has no intensions of trying to play accurate but like to improvise his stuff.
Swell job. This song is beautiful, which you know, and you did it justice. The practice you put in was well worth it and sometimes Tool's 11 minute songs need to be 45 minute ones.

NO KIDDING you use your fingers with jazz! Jazz sounds HORRIBLE with anything but a mellow fingered sound.
Musicians do what's necessary to make things sound right. FLEA USES A PICK SOMETIMES.
