  • ...it SEEMS???

  • they treated black people so badly in States back then it seems.Thats just sad...

  • Very long reach

  • Like many I hated Sonny Liston for years. This video has given me a different perspective on the man. A truly sad story and a great great boxer. RIP Sonny.

  • RIP SONNY LISTON-3

  • Love you sonny rip man I almost cried when I saw this I understand you will forever be in our hearts people please post sum positive things about sonny on here

  • This guys allright beatin up pigs and taken their little pistol.Fuck all you cops u need to be fuckin locked up and spareyed with pig shit fuckin assholes

  • Calista I am a big Ali Fan and knew him personally yrs ago, never met Liston but know his nephew, Robert Dorris from growing around the corner from his home on west side of Chicago, He has many pictures of him and Sonny growing up as Sonny's oldest sister is his mother He will never admit that Ali beat Sonny because of family pride I feel but we had many debates on the subject but I feel that Sonny was definitely one of the best of all time I also feel that in Feb, 1964 to1 of best of all time

  • Joe Louis is the greatest, but sonny is just as great

  • Ali beat him with just a few punches

  • @xR1D1xful

lol yeah right. Sonny took a dive, he owed money.

  • Hey Calista2000 when is your book coming out? I've always been fascinated by Liston's boxing abilities and the extraordinary sadness and darkness of his life. I am very interested in reading what you have to say.

  • We have the police reports and the death certificate. The family is only allowed to have access to these things. My book will reveal this to the public. My grandmother's dying wish was to finally tell the truth about Sonny. She wrote "Night Train" that is now in the hands of Paramount Pictures. The fact that her name is not on the script is a travesty. I will tell the truth in my book so that my Grandmother Geraldine Liston will finally rest in peace. No one understood because he was the shadow.

  • That is exactly what I'm basing my book on. The fight had a political angle that has its core in racism. My book will focus on the issue of racism. These people who claim to know Sonny are only speculating. My grandmother Geraldine Liston and the Liston family have all the answers. My book will come out explaining everything. My name is Lynel Gardner and I'm in charge of the Liston Estate. My book will quiet the naysayers. And reveal the racism that persisted then and still persist today.

  • Floyd Patterson was one of the most descent men ever

  • @TA152H01 Get the d*cks out of your ears and listen. Carl Williams is a 2nd rate hack. If his jab was so great his record would be a lot better. Go find his crack pipe...

  • R.I.P Sonny. My favourite fighter, and i wasn't even alive when he died. Have a lot of respect for him, he could've easily been the best heavyweight ever. Shame he wasn't

  • @TA152H01 - regardless of who might have had the n'best' jab, it's patently obvious from the this footage that Liston had a great one. The fact that Ali was able to deal with it is a tribute to his great ability, not a reflection of lack of quality in Liston's jab.

  • @oshawaxpress Actually, that Ali could deal with it, was because of the slow speed of the jab, not Ali's great ability. He had problem with jabs his entire career, even not so great one. Norton's really bothered him.

Liston had a very hard jab, and it had good reach, but it lacked the speed to be effective against everyone. Think of him fighting Holmes. He'd never land it. But, against most guys, it was very effective, especially with his reach.

  • @TA152H01

As most people already know, Norton was a problem for Ali because of his famous crab defense, NOT his jab. One of the easiest things for a jabber to handle is another jab, you just work right around it with your own, especially if you're taller.

Ernie Terrell had an even better jab than Norton's and it was no problem for Ali.

  • @TA152H01

Norton's crab defense was an incredible tool for neutralizing the jab, and all work off of the jab. This was also why a Larry Holmes that was only 5 years into his career had to settle for a split decision against a Ken Norton who was 10 years into his career. The style was a major problem for Boxer punchers.

  • RIP there big guy

  • As great as he was, He only makes Ali look all the more greater

  • Damn, I almost cried watching this. R.I.P. Sonny Liston

  • r.i p sonny liston one of the greatest boxers ever long live the bear sonny

  • I never saw or heard this side of Liston. Seems to me like a good man, victim of racism. Most of the these big black men or nice in heart. Specially, Liston eyes look so sad. Great man

  • Sonny Liston definitely ranks top 5 or top 10 greatest HW of all time. No heavyweight has ever instilled fear on his opponents like Liston did. Liston was the guy no one wanted to fight because he was incredibly dangerous, they actually had difficulty in getting him fights because so many fighters avoided him.

  • Sonny Liston ran with mob dudes cuz they were the only ones who would put up serious money in his fights

  • Lollin' at the mental picture of Sonny Liston stuffing a cop into a trash can

  • @pnutbutrncrackers Shut up , fuck the police. Dumb pigs.

  • @Ant45078 What a stupid comment. Pathetic.

  • @pnutbutrncrackers Be quiet you fag.

  • damn...

  • Everyone talks about his glare, but his smile is really heartwarming. You can tell he loved kids. Really sad story.

  • I think it's like this, order of HW's: Ali Johnson Liston Louis Holmes Foreman Dempsey Marciano Frazier Tyson (higher if you look at just '88)
  • Comment removed

  • This is a really sad story about a man who was misunderstood by so many people. I often wonder if he had a friend in the world. There was so much more to come from him. I think he needed a kind word from someone or someone to put an arm around him and tell him i care about you.

  • All the poisonous Sports illustrated hacks who wrote articles attempting to stop Liston from getting his chance at the heavyweight title are here.

Now, after he's dead, they spew out their poison at him further.

And smirk as they do it.

    Disgusting.

  • Who gives a shit about cassius clay

  • @shotgunshawzy he put a whoopin on sonny

  • @shotgunshawzy Im with you but unfortunately alot of people do give a shit.

  • Does anyone know the SONG at the end?

  • Ali was awesome..........But Seeing this and remebering All the f ucked up things Ali said about him. On Tv . Um.across the room. mixed emotions. I guess It was part of his game plan.Ali in your head. All the name calling had to hurt Sonny. Maybe more than the Ko's. not to much pretty about boxing cept a ring girl or 2.

Hope Love is all around you Sonny L.

  • may Allah have mercy on his soul................this is a cold world

  • @premedog Ameen

  • why would anybody dislike this!? show some respect!

  • When you're a big guy, you're automatically a threat in people's minds. You can either play up to their expectations and go around doing stupid stuff, or you can conduct yourself like a gentleman. If Sonny Liston went around robbing gas stations (he was convicted only once - no telling how many times he got away before and after) and getting drunk in public it's nobody's fault but his.

His biggest problem was his own lack of good judment.

  • Its easy to just sum up his misfortunes like that, but what human being wouldn't have flaws being the 12th/13 kids with a father that literally beat him and used him as a plow mule and a mother that abandoned him. The man made a connection to the priest because it was the person that ever treated him like a human, the mob figures where the only people that cut him a break and gave him a shot at the title.

So when you say his lack of good judgment, what alternative did he have?

  • He has some big ass hands.

  • @scottyb453 biggest ever recorded in boxing it think and reach if im not mistaken

  • When you compare Liston's interviews with most modern athletes, he comes off as a polite, intelligent gentleman, but America wanted Liston be its bad guy, and did whatever it had to to make it happen that way.

  • @lazur1 Yup, as compared to a loudmouthed braggart like You-know-who. He was a lot smarter than he ever received cerdit for being. Sonny reminds one of a Joe Louis, both in demeanor and fighting skills, namely his punching power. Imagine a Sonny vs Tyson. I'd give Sonny the edge. Marciano was very lucky never to have fought Sonny.

  • poor guy

  • Liston's life was sad & tragic! He just wanted to be accepted by the world and he FULLY deserved it (taking himself from prison inmate to the Heaveyweight Champ of the World), yet sadly he was robbed of positive recognition. Ironically, the ONE time the public was "for" him, it was to knockout the best boxer EVER...Clay aka Muhammad Ali! And when Sonny couldn't deliver, no one cared again. Equally tragic was the suspicious circumstances of his death. RIP Sonny, hope you are in a better place.

  • what documentary was this

  • Floyd was the coolest.

  • "we have to pray for the poor bastard".....???

    condescending much?

  • he was one of the best boxer, having that tough life as well, plus at the age of 40 he faught ali, now anyone thats 40 and has enough balls to fight ali deserves respect, rip sonny

  • @Nathanb6424 its impossible to tell if he was 40 or not but i do agree he had alot of balls and was a great boxer

  • @australiafinest he was about 40 though, there was a documentary that i watched saying that he was in very old looking but roughly born in 1928 to 1932

then minus 1964 which was the fight from ali which = 38-40

  • @Nathanb6424 Investigations about how old he was when he passed determined that he was 38 when he passed and was born in 1932. So he was 32 when he fought Ali. I think Liston is in the top 5 heavies of all time.

  • liston was a beast and i love the movie of him phantom punch

  • Wow....what a sad story. This video changed the opinion that I have had of Sonny Liston for many many years. RIP Sonny.

  • @realdeal8471 It IS a sad story. Even when he had reached the ultimate top, people still called him an ugly animal and a stupid nigger, but he was the champion of the world... CHAMPION of the fucking WORLD....

  • @matthewmccall78 Liston was one of the greatest.

  • ali wins. even in listons prime ali would have one. thats why ali is considered the greatest of all time

  • @matthewmccall78 It's great how you make this accusations that Liston was a bum but have no evidence to back it up. Sonny had almost equal punching power to Foreman (according to Ali and Wepner) he also had the best jab in heavyweight history and was ducked for 9 WHOLE YEARS before he got a title shot. There is nothing to say this man is a bum, he would have beaten Joe Louis, Mike Tyson and both Klitschkos.

  • @MrBumboclart I'm with you on that one. Both Ali and Wepner said Liston punched harder that Foreman, even Foreman himself said Liston was the only man to ever back him up. So he definitely wasn't a bum. And no matter what these Ali obsessed pricks say, Liston was one of the best heavyweights in history.

  • @twiskins Even if he didn't hit as hard Liston was the better fighter, he had an awesome jab and was a more technical boxer than people give him credit, he could box or slug and was masterful and changing the whole style of a fight in the blink of an eye, such as the Williams fight, he tried to box until his corner told him to slug - and Williams was on his backside in no time.

  • @matthewmccall78 Ali beat him down? You're ignorant. Ali beat a past his prime, past 30yr old Liston who hadn't trained properly and was on his way out. As for the second fight even Jerry Izenburg and George Chuvalo knew it was a fix and you'd have to be Ali brainwashed not to see it. Liston is an ll time great, he would have beaten Tyson, Louis, Klitschkos and more. Do some research before you post stupid comments.

  • @MrBumboclart

     He's a Bum!

  • @matthewmccall78 You're a fucking bum, what have you done so great in life to call Sonny, the ex-heavyweight champion of the world who fought Ali twice, sparred with Foreman, knocked Patterson out twice in under one round a bum? He's accomplished more in his life than you ever could, that's why he's a Hall of Famer and you're dissing people on their own video to try and get enjoyment out of life. fuck you

  • Liston's voice came as a surprise!

  • @SAHBfan1 cont. they are Joe Louis,Jack Johnson,George Foreman and Mike Tyson just edging Jack Dempsey out.Now if you press to say who I think would win id say Joe Louis but with no certainty what so ever.

  • @SAHBfan1 very difficult question. As i said training techniques, nutritian and the increase in size of heavyweights over the decades make it very difficult to judge say a Joe Louis against say Lennox Lewis(even though I take Lerwis all day there) and is there enough quality footage to truly assess the galveston giant, Jack Johnson. That said in ideal world with all heavyweights in there prime in the same era i would pick 4 to fight a mini tournament to see who truly is the greatest

  • @dylan8176 Are you mentally ill? Dont even mention Lewis in the same sentence as Louis. Joe is by far a superior boxer.

  • @matthewmccall78 hes alot better than what would ever b

  • damn Sonny had such bad luck with the law

  • Another one of boxing's many sad stories

  • THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME ALL THE ALI-LOVERS ARE ALL BRINDLED BY THERE HATRED AND RACISM

  • THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME

  • Sonny the GREATEST OF ALL TIME NO DOUBT.

  • Sonny the GREATEST OF ALL TIME NO DOUBT

  • Cheated anyway

  • This is one of the saddest/depressing videos I have ever seen on youtube about a boxer.

  • He looks so sad, damn.

  • rest his soul

  • RIP. But you were still a cheater.

  • @PrkchpsNaplsaws No he wasnt wtf.

  • poor guy so much pain in his eyes. It hurts to see him so sad

  • 5:30

"Father Murphy was like a father to Sonny"

    hahahahaha had me in stitches

  • Ali, and Liston, fixed!

Fuck the Police in those days!

As a fighter you couldn't tell anyone that the fight was fixed unless you wanted to end up dead.

  • Ali, and Liston, fixed!

Fuck the Police in those days!

  • @duveimperial Fuck the police every day.

  • the dude had alot of demons it sounds like from being fucked with as a child

I heard he died of a heroin overdose but he was deathly afraid of needles. the mob had a hold of him also I heard & made him throw some fights but I didnt think either fight against ALI he threw & that phantom punch with ALI moving backwards it did land flush I think I mean I seen ANDERSON SILVA knock out FORREST GRIFFIN with almost the same punch but ofcourse with alot less padded gloves

  • @damocvc

There is no way Liston would of beat Ali in his prime, Liston was good in his day, maybe even in the top 5 heavyweights of all time, but the number 1 spot goes to Ali by a longshot.

  • @anglessol goes to joe louis G.O.A.T

  • @anglessol No Joe Louis.

  • @Ant45078 No doubt people who dont think Joe Louis was the greatest dont understand boxing

  • @15230 def not the greatest but Joe is up there

  • @anglessol Ali by a longshot are you kidding? Tyson and Foreman in there prime are both far superior boxers from modern times, let alone boxers throughout history who it is difficult to compare due to weights, footage, training methods etc..Speak to any true boxing historian/expert on who was the greatest all time boxer on pure boxing ability alone and Ali will top nobodys list.

  • @anglessol LISTON WAS 40 WHEN HE FAUGHT ALI

  • boxers have sum of tha sadist lives

  • I am distantly related to Sonny Liston

  • @cavendish44 me too, I believe we all originated from Africa

  • @cavendish44 sure u are, u taken your meds yet?

  • Check out Philadelphia Boxer Anthony Abbruzzese

  • Liston was underrated but in his era he was most feared in the ring

  • Back in October of 1974, many respected boxing historians and ex-world champions said that they believed that George Foreman was the strongest and hardest punching heavyweight champion in boxing history – something that is endorsed by many even to this day. Former heavyweight greats Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis, who both knew a thing or two about punching, agreed that Foreman was the most powerful heavyweight they had ever seen.

  • I hear you on that, he was underated

  • Sonny Liston, such a fascinating story, such a fascinating man!

  • what a sad story I feel sad for him in the same time sad about the system of america

  • Sonny was a victim of a wicked system. Used and abused by the mob. So they parked a Cadillac in his driveway. So What. He was a CASH COW to the Euro Negros. Nothing more....nothing less. I used to hate Liston until I read the Sonny Liston and learned what the brother went through. He REALLY got screwed by the italians. Yea, when Muhammad came along it ended the italians grip on the game. But, one trickster led to another. Here comes Don King. Geeze.

  • sonny was an underated success story, he went from prison to a proffesion and a good living.

  • Ali's arrogance was fuckin legendary as well as his provocative approach to opponents. So yes, to many a complete jerk and a promiscuous wannabe muslim

  • There's a movie that just came out about him called "Phantom Punch"

  • @trucho519 YUP

  • RIP SONNY

  • sonny you were a freind of mine rip

  • I don't blame Sonny for beating up that cop. I'd have done the same thing.

  • people will remember him for his losses to Ali

despite this, he is easily one of the top 10 heavyweights of all time IMO

Perfect left jab, great boxer with tremendous power especially left hook and not as slow as people think

his fights against cleveland williams and Floyd patterson remain the best

    RIP

  • how come they didnt put him in fight night round 4

  • @kingmiked13 they did

  • @PbxGriffin hmm really it must be a update then because since i bought it i havnt got an update for it so it has to be a update right

  • that docu makes ali looks like an ass hole and a prick

so watch it again..Foreman was the hardest puncher. your knowledge of boxing

    is just like an infant...

  • @ericssson i see you posted the comment without replying to mine because you were afraid that id see it and make you look like the fucking idiot you are...

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

man that's fucking hilarious, and look your comments dont even match up with mine it just you trying to copy what i said but you just sound so much more stupid. LOL please respond though you dumb shit, its hilarious to see these comments you post.

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane i dont know, u sound rather stupid yourself.dont sell yourself short!!

  • @ericssson As fondly remembered as Ali is try watching documentaries from fighters that received horrible verbal taunts from "The Greatest"-Joe Frazier still hates Ali to this day. Ali was, like everybody is at some stages in their lives, an ass.

  • chuck wepner said Liston hit harder than foreman easily, and keep in mind wepner fought an old Liston. Liston used to beat the hell out of foreman in their sparring sessions. need i say more? Liston was a fucking animal.

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane watch facing ali and than talk

  • @ericssson i did you fucking idiot. ive also watched countless other interviews because unlike you i am a boxing fan and fighter and my knowledge of boxing goes further than one documentary that was meant to cock ride ali.

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane

lol If Liston hit so much harder than Foreman then why did Wepner decide to take 7 more rounds of punishment from Liston then he did from Foreman.

Oh and Foreman was young when they sparred. I don't know who would have one in a match up though, Sonny had a technical edge while George had a slight edge in power.

  • @Aphoresis ok here are the facts.

    1) after liston fought wepner, wepner needed over 120 sutures in his face and was traumatized for weeks. Wepner even says that sonny hit the hardest by far.

    2) Sonny was old when he fought wepner, way past his prime, and still hit harder than a young george.

    3) yes foreman was in his 20s but its not like he wasnt a hard hitter back then and on top of that sonny was past 40.

    4) he also had a longer reach and was a much better boxer than foreman.

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane Wonderful observation Sherlock! Maybe that's why they called Chuck Wepner "the Bayonne Bleeder? Just throwing that out there, I could be wrong.

  • @lancer1868 so, foreman didnt nearly do as much damage as an old sonny did to him, wepner was traumatized for weeks because of what sonny did to him.

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane Foreman brutalized him in 3 rds where it Liston 10rds you have to watch the fight to appreciate the difference between Liston and Foreman. Liston did to Wepner what every other decent fighter did hence the name Bayonne Bleeder but don't think Wepner did not give a good account with Sonny. Foreman on the other hand was like a man beating and manhandling a boy Foreman was a far more destructive fighter.

  • @Richdanahuff lol and wepner even said that liston was the fighter to hit him the hardest. But i guess your the expert right, wepners just bullshiting i mean your opinion is so much more valuable. haha nuthuggers these days, your ignoring fucking facts.

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane And when Chuck talks about Foreman he says he is the hardest hitter etc...Ever been a fighter ?? so you have no idea how us fighters talk about fighters. There is no fact in a fighter opinion genius. Killing me with your idiocy if you watch the fights there is a huge difference. Liston had 39KOs in 54 fights wearing 6 oz gloves and Foreman was wearing 10-12oz gloves by the time he was champ. Got any brain or are you a woman ruled by your emotional desires.?

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane I am sure I have forgotten more than you know about the sport and its history. Liston was beating up small heavies that today would be small cruisers. Foreman was beating up real heavyweights with real heavyweight strength and power Sonny was not. The myth has grown far beyond reality myths have a way of growing bigger and bigger by people who love the idea of his myth or badassness.

  • @Richdanahuff lol your cockriding of foreman is HILARIOUS and you just try and go around the fact that wepner said foreman hit harder than liston. hahahahahahaha man your hilarious. I gave you one FACT and you just gave me blind bullshit in 2 comments to try and beat around the bush. try again. haha

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane How olod are you 25-30yrs old ?? victim of the media hype of today. Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon except for the fighters of the day. Noone was afraid of him he wasn't worth it noone cared about Liston so he wasn't worth fighting. His legend has gotten out of control from reality. In a few years some other blast from the past will be popular and you will jump on his nut also. Stupid kid

  • @Richdanahuff lol try again, your still going around the facts and bringing up bullshit points that dont have anything behind them. haha retard. Im jumping on someones nut? hahaha your the one denying facts to make your idol foreman look better. When in reality he is overrated. But keep denying facts, it just makes this more enjoyable for me. hahaha

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane What the hell are you talking about your low IQ or your desire to jump on a mans nuts?? There are no facts just opinions are really past the 3rd grade I am perplexed by your desire to boost Listons ability. If Liston was half the fighter idiots like you thought he was he would have been 54-0 with 54 KO's with those 15inch fists and 6 oz horse hair gloves.

  • @Richdanahuff lmao a typical example of when a dumbass gets angry. Copying my insults and coming up with bullshit facts. You still havent countered the one point i made. HILARIOUS. haha try again fagot.

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane Typical what?? I am a fan of Liston but you younger kids have no idea of what Sonny has been characterized as. His story is not that much different than alot of fighters of his generation. Rocky Marciano wanted to come out of retirement and fight him because he was unimpressed. Who did he beat that made him so impressive Johanson KO's him with 1 punch he was goos for his time.

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane Also he was big for his time the days of the under #200 heavies were ending and Floyd was one of the smaller ones. Foreman talks of Liston from the memories of an 18 yr old kid not the man who destroyed Wepner. Had Liston not been famous Chuck would barely mention him, had Liston stopped him like Foreman did you would never have heard of it. Wepner takes Listons best shots for 10 rds but cannot remember the Foreman destruction.

  • @Richdanahuff poor poor retard still cant come with a proper fact. keep trying. Johanson? sonny wrecked johanson. LMFAO i was going to bring this up when you brought a proper fact to the table but w.e ill bring it up now amos johanson said that sonny hit harder than foreman and remember the sonny that fought wepner and johanson was an old sonny. Keep trying with those B.S. facts though its pretty... worthless.

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane Alright I am lost reading your posts your info is out of context. I am dying to read your definition of facts. According to you an old fighter who took beatings from half his opponents one being Liston and he gets a little spotlight time talking about liston is factual.? I need to know the ground rules of what you accept as fact kid.

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane Did I mention that liston never fought Johanson curious where you heard they had fought. I know Rocky Marciano was so unimpressed he started training for a comeback to fight him he saw him as bully who fold in the face of a fighter who fought back and hit hard like little old 179 lb "I broke his jaw and whooped his ass" Marty Marshall the same guy who took him the distance in a 3rd fight losing a dec.

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane Funny you think a champ who had 11 of those skinny little blown up Lt Heavies go the distance would destroy a 220Lb pitbull in Tyson LOLOL. Look at what a fighter roughly the size of liston in his prime would be like watch the Marvis Frazier fight and see how a 210lb 6ft guy stands up to his strength What was liston 6 ft and 215 whoa what a difference. I am so impressed what did you graduate the 3rd grade today ? aren't you a big boy hooray

  • @thecrazyoftheinsane I think you make excellent points but there is the chance that Sonny never reached 40, depending on which birth date you believe, Sonny Liston may have only been 38 at the time of his death. R.I.P Sonny "A Man"

  • IMO if Tyson kept out the way of Liston's left jab, he'd maybe win (60/40) cos although Liston could hit hard, Mike was quick & the question mark was always his spirit. I'd say that this would be Tyson's greatest test though.

  • i feel like sonny at times...like nobody knows me at all...sad story here

  • What about Ali at 32 and Liston at 32? ahhh? Not so fast, think about it.

  • @TheChoice264

Ali would have lost for sure imo.

And Ali is my favorite fighter ever

  • Yeah, very interesting. One thing is for sure and that is there is NO WAY Ali could've used the rope-a-dope against Charles Sonny Liston. Not with that jab! Not to mention Ali would never employ that against Liston. There was only one way to beat him,ask Cassius Clay.

  • great point

  • @TheChoice264

Sonny Would've won imo.. sonny was a beast.

  • @TommyGun7111 Agree

  • @TommyGun7111 Agree

  • gives me the chills.

If I could go back in time, I would go to that airport with all my friends and family, and I would cheer him on as he walked off that plane.

  • but u didnt cuz u followed wat other did.

  • no, because I wasn't alive during this era, silly

  • oh yea my bad

  • @reznick8 But surely all 3 of you wouldn't make much of an impact
