The straightsword is supposed to be a bit more flexible, since only a few inches above the hilt is stiff for blocking. The tip is flexible and sharp for striking. My sifu (who only teaches traditional kung fu) told me that in the past they had straightswords you could wrap around ur waist for concealment, but obviously this is the extreme and most straightswords are more rigid than that. Secondly this is probably just a practice sword.
