Actually, this kind of imagery comes from one of the most famous ghost stories in Japan called Yotsuya Kaidan if I remember correctly. Oiwa, the wronged female who becomes yurei, is the originator of the expression "Urameshiya".

But yes, you are correct, it lives on in movies like Juon, Ringu, etc.

Kind of, but with the neko gesture your fingers bend upwards at the third joint and then curl under at the knuckle and slightly open, it's playful looking. With the ghost gesture, it's more like fingers held together and bent at the wrist downwards. Kind of a stiff gesture.

TIt is complicated. You can look up and read on the internet for the story of Lady Oiwa. It is a kabuki play about a ronin named Iyemon who murders Lady Oiwa's father in order to marry her(her father knew he was no good). She doesn't know that though and agrees to marry him. They have a son but soon he takes notice of a well to do younger woman who is in love with him. The young woman's grandfather gives Iyemon some poison to kill Oiwa so he can marry his grandaughter. Lady Oiwa has delicate

health and so he tells her it is a medicine to fortify her health. She takes the poison but it does not immediately kill her, instead it disfigures her once beautiful face. Oiwa learns then of her husband's treachery from an old masseur and she dies not of the poison and her illness, but her powerful emotions. Iyemon then kills him as well and throws his and Oiwa's bodies in the river. The marriage to the new girl takes place but when Iyemon sees her face under the veil it is the face of Oiwa.

He then in fear cuts off Oiwa's head only to find he has just cut off the head of his new bride. He also ends up killing her grandfather. He is finally driven mad by Oiwa's ghost showing up everywhere he goes, he even sees her face in such common things as a lantern. She gives him no rest, neither does his conscience. He is eventually killed by his brother in law for the murders he committed.
