wow, to be honest the only exposure i have had to reason has been reason adapted plugin for protools. i cant be bothered to use it as a RTAS rewire, and i am a little sick of protools arduous workflow. hopefully this can integrate music production tools for a more seamless production environment, encouraging creativity.
thank from france for this record innovative program , exactly what i was waiting for.i used reason with cubase in rewire and it was boring , long time to complete a song, it allows to have a faster result, the real better innovation is the work with "block" in sequencer , real progresse , i was redesigned my home studio in all vst , now i doubt , it seem very intuitive , it lets place to creation more than other soft , where you spent to much time troubleshoot , here you only think music
If I wanted to quiuckly set up for a band or with a large amount of inputs to record studio or live with different bands how quickly can this be set up to record? Is there a limit to the number of inputs to record @ 1 time? I was looking into the new Presonus firestudio with optical into the digi max. What are your thoughts on this or a different interface with 24 channels? B Nice if you or someone could show a video on how quickly you could set up for a live recording with several inputs
One downfall I will never get used to in reason/record...that pretty much every other program has: The ability to cut/copy past midi/waves files while playing the song in arrange mode or otherwise. I think it's ridiculous and a creative buzz kill supreme that you have to stop.....line up the marker, which always seems to default wrong location...then paste in loops...then hit play again....this is weak. When you use ableton, etc. you get used to this flow...it's a killer using reason to arrange.
its not really that hard to arrange in reason at all...in fact its much more easier to arrange in reason than anywhere else when you understand how to.
Say after your done making your loop or creating your riff you can copy whatever the region is and then continually paste it and as often as you want to and you can use the same region that you copied onto other instruments. you dont have to use the L and the R to do that either. just click the region...copy and paste as much as you want.
Trust me, "I understand how to" I am not a Reason hater or new to it, I have been using it for many years, tutoring others in it, a beta tester. I know the shorts. I love and will always support it (flaws and all). BUT no offence or pretence here, it sounds a bit like you have not tried much else, try Pro Tools or Ableton Live, then we can talk creative workflow, ease of use, etc. Did you read my comment really? Pros accept reason-isms to a point...then end up in rewire.
well no offence either but you wouldnt know what other programs ive used without asking...speaking of other programs i do use logic primarily and i have played around with ableton (good for people who like to incorperate hardware with software but i dont have much hardware so im all software). Ive also used Pro Tools VERY often to mix sessions and such (ive found its more bad than good at times).
Getting back to the topic at hand Reason IS much easier to arrange with...continuing
You mean sort of like when you did not ask for clarification based on my comment right? You missed "while playing the song" part. Check it. Pro Tools LE? Yeah it is, I run HD. What you are saying is opinion, all have different styles and workflow. I like some arcane hardware that others hate. Simply stating it IS much easier is rather academic, no? Site examples on its vast superiority! I can't live in Reason entirely, no VST, etc. It get's relegated to soft synth status, I am far from alone.
I didnt miss the "while playing the song part" which is exactly why i said "just click the region..copy and paste as much as you want" lol.
Also it doesnt take too much clarification to understand when you typed "its a killer using reason to arrange" which is what im disagreeing with.
Though the feature that your talking about might not be in reason (not having it hasnt shortened my work flow) doesnt necessarily mean "its a killer to arrange in reason"
Perhaps it required me to say: "it's a killer to arrange without hearing the song in real time...to me." I thought that was um implied with "me" writing it. You CAN'T copy paste without stopping. So point you are making is Reason is cool and easy to arrange in? I agree on both. I appreciate you are defending a program you like, I like it too. TO ME this kinda kills it next to others, where you can copy and paste while rocking out effortlessly and then bang in that prearranged kickass chorus. Yay
@psychalysis absolutely relevant, thanks very much for that shortcut, just bumped up the flow in reason for me big time, never got this to work until I tried it again.
Regarding VST's...I dont know what your purpose is for using them or what kind you use but you dont need them for certain things in reason as far as synthesis and FX is concerned...There are combinators that are especially made for FX and you can open up your own combinator and throw as many synths as you want in there and play around with them. if your dealing recording (vox, instruments..etc) then I find it understandable ro use external plugins, Vst's and even rewire but thats just me.
I think you site some huge strengths of reason there and why it jumps up in my workspace constantly. But just a note on the VST's, yes I work heavily with voice and recorded live instruments, so it is almost required. But dude...you must have heard some of the high end VST's? I mean reason combinators and effects are great, but....uh let's not kid ourselves. I won't even go into outboard gear those awesome VST's are emulating. Call me a purest, snob whatever, but the proof is in the sonics. :)
The Layout in Reason is much more easier to work with and with the tool window it makes things much more accessible...the things you have to go through to get an arpeggiator in logic is silly...meanwhile if i go to the tool window i can double click or drag it in the rack with ease making my work flow faster.
As someone who produces music with it...I havent found the need to use rewire. I substitute plugins for combinators but in any event where i need something...i just rewire to logic :)
BTW I hear you on Logic, honestly have least experience with it, but what I have done feels clunky (yes opinion). I am talking about comparisons with Ableton? Pro Tools HD primarily, which it sounds like you have just messed around (not dug as deep) with Live because you are not a hardware guy? Which I get. I am a hardware guy, processing, effects, controllers, etc.
Clunky as in good or bad? Logic is very powerful as far as mixing is concerned Ive pulled off some nice solid mixes with it without having to deal with certain griefs that you have in pro tools with processing and such...you know...too much plugins and stuff. I didnt have to do much tweaking with plugins in logic either which is a plus. My friend is a DJ and he actually uses both Logic and ableton together which is pretty cool. Id be more of a hardware guy if i had more XD.
Logic is clunky to me because I don't use it enough...actually it's easy! I am used to clunky (pro tools) so the inverse is...wierd. All this yakking about sound....a good set of ears will yield a kickass rocking mix, with a 4track cassete recorder, a couple sm-57's and a cheap compressor and cheesey reverb. Heck it's where i (and many others) started making good and terrible mixes! You know this ; ) Now look where we are...mouse and keyboard wasteland.
I just still dont believe any real seasoned engineer would use this for polished radio-ready songs...especially as opposed to using the pro gear/plugins they already have. This is CLEARY for the bedroom, beat making reason-using producers and engineers....I've tried it and it has that same "thin" sound that Reason always had ( i luv Reason btw) and i just cant get with it...it is a cool program though but again in my opinion its geared more toward the "bedroom" guys...my 2 cents
I've been messing with reason ever since it was Rebirth back in 99. It's not that there aren't good things in it, like the arpeg, matrix, masterer, reverb, vocoder and Thor, though the maelstrom and subtractor basically blow. THe biggest problem with Reason is its stinking sequencer, and I dont see that has changed. Its 3-4 mouse clicks for every one in ableton. The up/down flow is annoying as hell. Record needs a giant monitor. I'm sick of exporting out of Reason to Ableton, but no choice.
So, this kinda appeals to me; I've had Reason 3.0 for around 2 years or so now, although I got it for free from my old guitar teacher so it's not exactly...legit. So if I wanted to upgrade, I'd probably go with the best package available; the record/reason duo sounds cool to me, but is it worth it? Or should I just get Reason 4? I may or may not use record for actual audio recording, so...is this a big, easy step up from Reason 3 or should I stick to what I got? :O
I actually like the idea behind record. If i want to record a vocal, or bassline, i can do it right then and there and still work in reason. COOL. Ill take it
may i use line 6 virtual pod in real time to record my guitar, like ableton live 8 with guitar plug in like amplitube? may i use vocoder in real time to?
well well ... i am NOT impressed at all ... but i hope the reason to use record will be turning out the same like the reason to use reason: stability and less cpu ... that are the only facts making me use propellerheads software on my notebook - AND the support from many midi controllers of course ... i never would use propellerheads software if they hadn't outstanding support from midi controller manufacturers like m-audio and novation ...
Okay this is not the end of Propellerhead. Once they start to network with Euphonix's System 5-MC its a total fucking wrap up seriously. The guys at Propellerhead are massively smart and I love how they played their ultimate trump card and took the game by storm!!
Yeh its great they are smart but its such a hassle (for us users) when u know they could have done it perhaps 2 years back....but thats business for u same with pro tools i love using it but the digidesign hw is so restricted to use when it comes to other DAWS. !! (grr)
I'm still interested in getting this (simplicity, stability and THAT mixer), despite not ever having used Reason. I'm not interested in Reason and doubt I ever will be. Which makes me think I maybe shouldn't get Record, seeing how aimed towards the current Reason userbase it seems to be. Hmm.
Hmmm... Reminds me when I went to the Ford dealer, I'm really interested in the 5.0 302 Engine despite never having drove a Ford. I'm not interested in Ford and doubt I ever will be. Which makes me think I shouldn't get a 302, seeing how aimed towards Mustangs they seem to be. Hmmm
That slightly puzzling analogy wasn't patronising at all! Well done! So, basically, you're saying I definitely should be interested and familiar with Reason in order to fully appreciate Record and what it can do? As, despite it being a standalone program for musicians and home recording, I wouldn't appreciate it as I'm not already a Reason user? Is that what you're saying? Or are you just being facetious?
Thank God you can still use the sounds in Reason 4 on this...but only time will tell when they realize how important VST's are to a Digital Producer. sure I wanna play a guitar or anything I can hook up to it. but after seeing East West Quantum Leap Ministry of Rock and Prominy SC Electric Guitar VST's...who wants to spend thousands of dollars tryna find the right Guitar when I could use a VST? just think it over and put VST support into this Program "Record" and you won't regret it
xlingk - These guys know what they doing. They gonna build the program in such way so we wont need any of vst stuff. VST sometimes is a little bugy. Propellerhead creates the most stable programs even if you run it on windows - pc.
