TCM has shown this in the US a number of times. Wonderfully filmed, although the symbolism (such as here - sexual tension from a man attacking a woman with his dangerous sword) seems really heavy handed. It's lovely to watch.
A wonderful film. Julie Christie truly marked the arrival of the sixties in film; in Billy Liar, swinging her handbag, walking down the high street of a grimy northern town. Also, of course, a John Schlesinger film.
Thomas Hardy (and Dorset) are gifts to cinematographers. Despite the period in which he set his novels, he was truly a modern a writer of modern sensibilities, long before DH Lawrence.
This clip is stylised and camp, but is one of those cinematic memories which remains forever.
I have just watched the region one version of Far From the Madding Crowd on my DLP projector. Apart from being a little soft focus in places, I give Warner 9/10 for their effort in re creating this wonderful 60s classic. At last, in it's original ratio and complete with play in, intermission and play in for second half. The DVD also has a 5.1 Dolby track. It's taken years of waiting but was it worth it, the answer in YES.
This film is so atmosperic and beautiful to look at. I remember seeing it and feeling that Terence Stamp seemed a bit silly in this scene, but awkwardness and silliness happens in real life, and too much slickness can give a manufatured feel, so the slight geekiness, does not take away from the film's impact. Anyway Bathsheba's in love at this point so is seeing Sergeant Troy through "rose tinted spectacles".
I saw this in a movie theatre when it first came out. I was thirteen and it made a big impression on me. Forty years later, Julie Christie still looks great but Terence Stamp less so.
I saw this beautifully haunting film at the Metropole Victoria cinema in London on a huge 70mm screen on it's release in 1967. What a shame the DVD was sub standard with picture grain and mono sound. Come on MGM, how about a remastered version in the correct ratio and 5.1 Dolby surround. There must be a 70mm neg out there somewhere.
I agree. I love the film as a whole, but Schlesinger's direction here is not good, and Stamp looks more camp than Bold Grenadier (he's actually a Sergeant). It was noted though, that director and actor did not get on, which may make explain the abberation to the film as a whole.
Terence is cute & all, but too much of a batshit bastard in this film. Alan Bates deserves Bathsheba's love, not the sword happy Troy. Thanks for posting & is there any way you could post that beauty of a song played during the rain? "Oh soldier, oh soldier, will you marry me" (the lyric goes)
aww, this seems worthwhile seeing. i wonder if it's available on DVD outside UK.. also didn't stamp & christie had an affair during the shooting of this film? anyways, they seem to possess certain chemistry. and stamp is hot even with the mustache.
Stamp had briefly dated Julie Christie a few years earlier, but during the time of filming he was totaly smitten by Vogue model Jean Shrimpton and at the end of each weeks filming in Dorset would drive home to London at top speed to be with her.
I want the DVD,but all i can find is a boxed set of 4 featuring Julie Christie. But apparently it has been cut,key scenes are not there, its in mono, and something is amiss with the size.(TCM website forum.Very helpful)I want to d/load it,cant find it anywhere.Wish it was on telly,i could tape it.Thanks for getting back.Any more ideas?
Great film, great scene. Julie Christie is such a babe - she looked even more beautiful in her thirties, and is still so, without having gone under the knife. This scene probably put her off all that.
Yes, ladies he was dashing, however, that flash in the pan was irresponsible and unfit for commitment. Do not miss Hardy's point that the common "every day sort of man", the hard workin farm hand, was the unassuming hero in this movie. The rich man and soldier were ambitious, indulgent, and reckless, whereas, the farmer displayed the attributes of faith, dignity, and moderation. It is the latter, not the former values that eudamonics is dependent on.

I really disliked this version. The 1997 version with Nathaniel Parker, Paloma Baeza, Nigel Terry, and Jonathan Firth is SO much better.
The problem is, it is not on DVD in America/Region 1 so fans have to rely on old videotapes. It is, however, well worth it.

I haven't seen this movie in a while; but I recognize those words being from a song titled 'A Bold Grenadier'.
British composer John Rutter conducted a performance of it by the London symphony and the Cambridge Singers.
