This made me cry. I am sure this hurt her but gold wouldn't be enough for what she is worth. If they ever come up with the platinum medal they can be sure that no matter what Michelle does she is worthy of being the first to recieve it. Do you guys know that Michelle's Chinese name is a very pretty one? It has a beautiful sound (like Guan Ying Shann)if read in Chinese. Guan is her family name(which she translates into Kwan), Ying basically means "intelligent, bright, or brilliant" and Shann means beauty or the elegant posture of a young lady. It's actually a rather feminine name for girls.
I'm really not a fan of Michelle Kwan at all but this video is really sad. And I have to agree with whoever said this before but the Olympics shouldn't define how good of a skater you are. Like Sasha Cohen (IMO, the best skater) didn't get gold in Torino, that doesn't mean she's not good enough. Sure, she hasn't gotten as many medals as Michelle, but she is known for her grace, beauty, elegance, and determination. And IMO, THATS what someone should be remembered for. Not what medals they got.
Part--2 It's more than a passion. And people love her for it. She was the happiest person EVER to win the Silver in the Olympics. She thought that nancy deserved the chance to go to Nationals. And the Olympics. Michelle is a fantastic skater IMO, anybody else thinks otherwise. YOU'RE A LOSER!

When they gave her a free pass to be on the team this year, it was hard to understand. And tonight, she's officially dropping out due to old age/injuries. Good choice. Good riddance.

I think withdrawing from the Olympics is Michelle's way of getting back to the Olympics. It eluded her twice already, so maybe this time she's the one eluding it. I think her plan is to prove that she can still qualify for the Olympics, withdraw from the competition, and then beat the Olympic gold medallist in the World's. :-)

It's so sad. I've watched Michelle Kwan since like '97 and it definitely feels like the end of an era and the beginnning of a new one. But, Michelle leaves a wondeful legacy. It's sad that we probably won't see her in the Olympics again but she had a good run. She should be proud. I know the rest of America is, including me. =)
Not all of America! Peggy Fleming is right..in all likely hood no one will ever match Kwan's medal count..with the new cop the skaters actually have to extend themselves and will be unable to keep at the level required now. Kwan had the advantage of being held up by the judges since judging was so objective and she didn't do anything athletic so she COULD hang on and on. At the Olympics she actually had to compete and even her best wasn't good enough for GOLD and she got flat out CREAMED!
i have to admit that as the years went by there were definitely other girls (like sasha cohen) who were on better than michelle kwan but either way, she did once have something...something good. i saw her on youtube skatin when she was just a lil kid and she was truly remarkable. if she could do that at that young age...u can't deny that she had/has talent. i definitely think she does and i'm sure most of america agrees.

Penguin - How can you even call her selfish for wanting to pursue her own dreams of gold!? It takes courage to try and achieve her goals even though she had that injury. If Emily Hughes was really meant to go to the opening ceremony then she should have improved her own skills to make sure she had a spot on the Olympics team instead of just being back up. You should listen to yourself before you blabber your ignorance.

Because she knew she wouldn't have a good shot as she could going to the Olympics with a injury. Emily Hughes, a perfectly good HEALTHY skater was left behind after her teammate basically said "Im going to go instead of you, you aren't as good as me." Emily would have and if Kwan had used a pen instead of skates to shove her in...She wasn't just back up until Kwan cheated her way in with the blessing of the usfska..I agree with you Penguin..

What a joke..Kwan skates the same boring program over and over..leg out..big grin and didn't bother improving HER skills..just counted on the judges to 'give her the Gold..NOT AT THE OLYMPICS'! Mediocre at best and a pathetic crybaby whose career ended as a joke at Emily's expense!

Laugh away..especially at KWAN..her fiasco in Torino was SO SO funny..sob, snivel, I have an 'owie'..I wudda won the 'GOLD' but owie..my hand hurts from penning my way in..SHE MADE A JOKE OF FS AND THE OLYMPIC CREED AND MOST OF ALL HERSELF! Emily is class act..what COULD she say? I enjoyed the whole spectacle..yet another entertaining evening courtesy of ME ME ME CHELLE KWAN!

I think withdrawing from the Olympics is Michelle's way of getting back to the Olympics. It eluded her twice already, so maybe this time she's the one eluding it. I think her plan is to prove that she can still qualify for the Olympics, withdraw from the competition, and then beat the Olympic gold medallist in the World's. :-)

Well, it could be that despite all the hype she is just a mediocre skater who loves the hype..she has so many unearned titles, but at the Olympics she had to actually compete with the best and the judges didn't HOLD HER UP..so she lost..Sasha should have taken bronze in SLC..in any case she's a L O S E R and a disgrace to the Olympic Creed!

It's so sad. I've watched Michelle Kwan since like '97 and it definitely feels like the end of an era and the beginnning of a new one. But, Michelle leaves a wondeful legacy. It's sad that we probably won't see her in the Olympics again but she had a good run. She should be proud. I know the rest of America is, including me. =)

Not all of America! Peggy Fleming is right..in all likely hood no one will ever match Kwan's medal count..with the new cop the skaters actually have to extend themselves and will be unable to keep at the level required now. Kwan had the advantage of being held up by the judges since judging was so objective and she didn't do anything athletic so she COULD hang on and on. At the Olympics she actually had to compete and even her best wasn't good enough for GOLD and she got flat out CREAMED!

i have to admit that as the years went by there were definitely other girls (like sasha cohen) who were on better than michelle kwan but either way, she did once have something...something good. i saw her on youtube skatin when she was just a lil kid and she was truly remarkable. if she could do that at that young age...u can't deny that she had/has talent. i definitely think she does and i'm sure most of america agrees.

First of all, I dont know how she only got silver in the last two olympics. I mean.. nine national championships.. 5 world championships.. only to get beat by 2 14 year olds? Tara Lipinski and Sarah Hughes? What kind of CRAP is that.. seriousy.

Michelle Kwan is SOOO Selfish, I mean, she was already getting over an injury, and decided to go to the Olympics, and not very long after the opening cerimonys, she quits. Now, Emily Hughes will never get the experience in participating in the Opening Cerimonies at the 2006 Olympics.

oh man. Even though I never loved Michelle Kwan, I felt horrible with this event. This video makes me cry every freakin' time I watch it! I have a whole new respect for her.
