I recently finished Oracle Bones. It is really a captivating tale containing multiple threads of stories. It amazes me that Hessler was able to cover so much about China in just one book, but not lose the reader along the way. Great stuff!
you are a great writer. i read about 3 hours every day. i live in oakland california. email me next time you are nearby and i will take you out to lunch. autobill2000@yahoo.com
I have been reading "River Town" since this afternoon till this very moment. It is really a great surprise and enjoyment to see author himself speaking from youtube and google(I have been imagine what the author would look like ) and puzzled that how an American would be mistook as Uighur in China.
Peter, you're brilliant and introduced me to the China I wanted to meet. Thank you for 'Rivertown' And today I hear of your book "Oracle". My Chinese journey does not have to end!
Hi Peter, I have read your book and realy enjoy it. We a publisher in Brazil specialized in books on China. I was born in china , grow up in China and spend additional ten years in china from 1993 - 2003. In search for books with insights, I have found yours as one of my favorite. Please reply. Thank you.
I am a native from Fuling, China. When I read 'River Town', the precise description of my hometown and people there made me really homesick. Very good author indeed.
I'm a filmmaker, photographer and teacher of high school film and photography..recently retired and doing film full time. I loved watching you on video and absolutely hated the camera work w/ three bald heads in the foreground and an empty screen in the background. It is truly a testament to your appeal as a speaker that pulled that off. Any plans to visit Ann Arbor for your next book tour? Or is that wishful thinking? Pam LeBlanc
Peter- I've been trying to find whatever you wrote re the Earthquake, yet afraid that it might have struck too close to your Peace Corps Assignment.Today I came across your Youtube piece. I teared up when I saw that it has impacted your community in Fulong. I'm a great fan of yours. I'm also glad to see that the "toothbrush" reference is still alive. I was in Peace Corps 1967-70, in Borneo. I feel we may have had similar experiences. Please keep in touch w/ those students. Pam LeBlanc
Wow I didn't know this was here! I just finished River Town and I'm already very fond of Mr. Hessler's writing. I can't wait to read Oracle Bones and I'm glad to have this insight on Chinese culture and lives! He is a very frank and often humorous writer who understands the world around him and relates to both the subjects in his book and the readers. This video was a good find!
Have not read the second book, but I've read 'River Town'. What a great book. He's an excellent writer and he gives you the foreigner's perspective, on how frustrating it can be sometimes, but also, how funny it can be, while living abroad. Overall, he has that rare ability to not take himself too seriously, but is passionate about the details and the journey. Anyway, I look forward to reading it. Peace!
Oracle Bones sounds like an interesting read. I have good things about "River Town", his first book.
