I wonder how this compares to the floods of the early 1950's. My dad always told us stories about standing on the bluffs overlooking downtown Sioux City watching the Missouri River rise flooding the civic center and stockyards. I wish we could divert the Missouri to East Texas were I now live. The feral hogs aren't even coming out it is so dry.

I live east of Kansas City, Missouri and while I'm not in any danger of the flooding a home my family owns is. Its never had water but in the basement but this makes me wonder now.
@ss11s you are all right about the media blackout! try this here on you tube: 6/24/2011 - Nebraska - Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power plant -- Radiation Test #1 -- 48.4 CPM
Thanks for the info. I was born and raised in Onawa. I now live in south Missouri. I have some friends in Blenco, they notified me that they expect to flood. Havent heard a word from anybody the last few days. I am asumeing that they left. Do you have any info for that area? Not too many into youtubeing around there.
This flood wasn't caused by nature, its because some idiots in Montana either forgot to tell the rest of the dams to release water after the winter or they just didn't care, that's why the water was building up at Gavin's Point, if i can remember right, this winter i looked down at the Missouri from Veterans Bridge in Sioux City, and the Missouri was lower than i ever seen it before. I don't why its so hard to pick up a phone to tell the rest of the dams to pull a lever to release water.
You r truely an idiot. The dam has been releasing above normal amounts the last 2 years. Nature has everything 2 do w/ it. WY & MT have had record snowfall this last winter. As of July 1st, they still have about 10 ft of snow on the ground, plus they have had record rains. They have received a years worth of rain in less than 2 months. If u r such such an expert on rivers, answer this question. Who builds a planned community along a major river w/o a levee system?
@ems4urlife i'm not a fuckin expert but i know people who work at Gavin's Point, and that's exactly what they told me.don't be callin me an idiot because i am getting that information from people who know what the fuck is goin on.
@ems4urlife and about your other comment, i wasn't blaming Gavin's Point, i blaming that dam in Montana, you can't blame the last dam on the missouri river for something that happened north of the dam, and even if i was idiot, i would still have enough intelligence to know that all rivers (excluding The Nile) flow North to South.
Been doing some research and NOT ALL rivers run north to south. Some actually do run the other direction. Here is a list of them just here in the U.S.:
Bighorn Wyoming and Montana, USA, 336 miles
Deschutes Oregon, USA, 250 miles
Genesee New York, USA, 144 miles
Little Bighorn, Wyoming and Montana, USA, 80 miles
the last flood was back in 1952 and 1953 when the missouri and floyd river flooded. my dad remembers it like yesterday, he was around 4 years old then and remembers the water being up to the chimney of his house.
I usedc to live in South Sioux, The baseball fields i used to play on, completely under water, and i'm down in Alabama, but all my family lives in South Sioux or Sioux City.
Damn the Army Corp of Engineers anyway, had they not been swayed by political pressure to relocate the site of Gavins point dam to Yankton SD much of this would have been avoided. Stupid is as stupid does and the Corp was stupid in choosing that location. I wish all my friends in NE, IA, MO, SD the very best and hope they can all come together and get through this.
Im from that area but dont live there anymore. Hopefully everything works out for those people. and @mihividz you sound ignorant bad things happen no matter where you live, not just by a river.
I'm from Sioux City IA, I was born and raised here. I have never seen anything like this. Everyone needs to come together to help each other out. There should not be any kind of negative comments or fights because it's not right. People should not be calling each other names, no matter if they are in the flooded area or not.
people should CARE about people everywhere in hardship disasters. I'm 70 miles north of Omaha NE & 30 miles south of Sioux City Iowa, I live 7 miles from the MISSOURI flooding as we type, I'm scared for us ALL. I have friends in a dinky town of 197 population south of me who are sandbagging furiously as we type here, they are closer to the Missouri river & will possibly be flooded out. the devastation of them losing their hard built homes & 98% of them elderly no rebuilding.
no matter whats going on, everyone needs to come together and help each other out. im not on here to argue back and forth with people who dont even know me. im here to express my sympathy for everyone who is being affected by this, even if they chose to live on a sand bar. people make mistakes and learn from this. god bless everyone. i live in the morningside area in sioux city iowa so i wont be affected by this since im higher up, but i know some people who might be affected.
Council Bluffs and Omaha are going to be OK. Hell, Omaha is still planning to hold the College World series at their new ball field which is less than a mile from the river.
Those along the riverbank who DID get flooded however, well, thats what you get for being too close to the river, idiots.
@ninjajuliekins Since you like to post replies and then delete them, here's what you wrote to me, coward:
"who cares about omaha? i sure dont. they are farther down south. im talking about all the cities up here that are being affected by the flooding as of RIGHT NOW. end of story. "
Perhaps those cities "up here" should have have invested on a decent levee and water management system like Omaha/Council Bluffs did. We're ready for it "down here". Sorry if your leaders "up there" suck.
@MiHiVidz Just because you aren't in an affected area doesn't mean you have get to proclaim your beliefs about how this is just another flood. This is some of the worst flooding in the history of the area. Yes, there have been worse floods in New Orleans and other areas, but Omaha is not a basin, nor will it ever be affected by a tsunami or hurricane. So given the area, this is pretty bad flooding and just because it's not affecting Omaha that bad doesn't mean other areas aren't affected.
@coda623 Feel free to run around like a headless chicken all you want. I refuse to be a lemming.
The media has "cried wolf" so many times that I have been able to sort the facts from the BS hype.
First people were trying to say that Omaha was under imminent threat of being swamped, and then when the facts didn't show that, they fall back to saying that a few podunk towns got water, as if that justified their claims.
Hamburg had crap for flood control, and that's why they got wet.
@MiHiVidz It's not really the media's fault. They were reporting the information they were given. Maybe it'snot as bad because people have been sandbagging and putting up other flood control everywhere it was needed. I mean look at the water treatment plant. They added a 10-foot levee and that's why it's not underwater.
@MiHiVidz You are very ignorant. I hope your house gets destroyed by a tornado. Then we'll see how you like ACTUALLY BEING AFFECTED by a natural disaster. I'm guessing no one would care, especially victims of this flood, which in your eyes I'm guessing is just a little puddle.
@ninjajuliekins So are you suggesting the "engineer" should not release that much water and allow the water to spill over the top of the dam and risk a catastophic failure of the whole system? If you choose to live near the Missouri you should have a house on wheels so you can move it out of the way. If you believe some developer that tells you lies about living on an over priced sandbar then you are an idiot. And the Big Sioux is not flooding, its backed up because of the Missouri.

There are 3 rivers that I know of that flow east to west. They are:
The Colorado River
The Columbia River and
The Snake River.
They all flow to the west and empty into the Pacific Ocean.
