little inverter cannot produces 450V from single 1.5V. I bet the transformer must did the major voltage multiplication.

I've tried to make the inverter stage from a disposable camera, but getting any transistor to switch with 1.5V is nearly impossible. The original transistor used in the camera was a 2SD879, which is as rare as water in a desert. How did you get the dc pulser element of it working?

@ConnorXV an inverter that takes 1,5v dc to 230 ac, then to a 18 stage cockcroft-walton multiplier (requires 40 400v film capacitors and 40 diodes, like the 1N4007. Plasmana has an instructable on this. however, be ware that he miscalculated the ammount of caps an diodes for the multiplier, you will need double the amount that he says, (therse 2 caps and 2 diodes per stage, he calculated it with 1 per stage, half output :S) otherwise, greate ible he made

@ jeffddow the Marx generator allows you to charge the capacitors in parallel to full capacitance, then discharge in series so you get the added total voltage of all capacitors giving you themed current output and max voltage output! The resistors wont allow the capacitors to discharge in parallel, they are bypassed using the spark gaps so you get a series circuit output. You need to see the circuit diagram and to have a reasonable knowledge On capacitors in circuits.

@ jeffddow capacitors in parallel will charge only to their peak voltage (450v in this case) but if they are in series the voltage can go up to the sum of all the voltage ratings (450+450+...) if you charge in series the capacitance (and current output) goes well below what it coul be if charged in parallel...

@jeffddow It's quite simple, the resistors(1MO) are needed to let the capacitors charge up, but they don't let the capacitors to get discharged in paralell. Since the 1-2 mm long plasma arc has a lower resistance than the resistor, the capcacitors discharge in series.
