The following is an excerpt from a poem I wrote in tribute: His flesh became word And was spoken among us, Though we esteemed him not-- With nappy head And frog eyes; ...he spoke with the tongue of a fierce angel and his pen was a mighty, two-edged sword. He preached the truth, in love, of course, for how else could he have done it? But heard him, we did not, like so many of our prophets before him...
I haven't read any of Mr. Baldwin's novels. But I read his short story "Sonny's Blues" twice and highly recommend it. The story trans-sends race and history.
@ophuchew Mr. James Baldwin is the best writer to ever come out of the United States of America.
I trust his words. He tells it like it is. He always loved his brothers and sisters of color. He would never forsake us or betray us. Read every thing that he has written and you will see whay I am saying.
@rlcope45 --James Baldwin is African America's contribution to not only American but World Literature. Oh, I never said he would. But it's not only people of color that can experience humiliation and degradation but people that are over weight, talk funny and are a little slower than others. It's not just people of color that can identify with characters in Baldwins story's.
James Baldwin and I share the same birthday. I was born a year before he died. I'm also a writer of short stories and have every intention on becoming a novelist. I think I may have taken on some of his spirit, lol. I have to continue to write for my people.
I appreciate any documentation on the world renown author and poet James Baldwin. I am a Graduate theatre student at WVU, and in the process of working on my thesis performance, which is a one-man show centered around the life of James Baldwin during the Harlem Renaissance period. I also experienced the rare opportunity to meet James Baldwin in 1986, a year before he died, in Philadelphia PA. James Baldwin inspires me to greater levels of achievement as a black artist. Thank you.
James Baldwin showed what true revolution is all about. He could have just stood back at wrote novels and short stories for the rest of his life, but he understood the importance of speaking out against injustice no matter what financial or physical cost it could bring upon himself. Baldwin as other African Americans of that time moved to France where Black People were accepted and appreciated for their humanity and not have to live in a racist society in America where they were not.
Nice to see this tribute to such a great writer. But his most famous work wasn't called "Go Tell it TO the Mountain." It was called "Go Tell it ON the Mountain."
It is a pity and travesty that there are no videos on the tube, of James Baldwin speaking about his work or the civil rights movement. He was an articulate voice who was unintimidated by the social climate. James Baldwin and Richard Wright were two ex-patriots, that became international writers.
I agree. I'm constantly reading his work. He contributed a tremendous amount to the world and cared deeply about his fellow human beings. There will never be another like him. Your assessment is accurate.
Great video! He's so deeply missed. One of the most important African-American writers/Civil Rights activists the world has ever given us. There will never be another James Baldwin.
...and he was GAY as well.
