Love fish sauce, and I think every Vietnamese loves fish sauce. It's like soy sauce to Chinese, shrimp sauce to Thai, ketchup to Americans....Love its smell (not recommend for Westerners to smell it ) :)!

this is one of the most interesting episodes when he went to Vietnam. I enjoyed watching them make fish sauce. so informative. Asians love fish sauce. a lot of westerners use to make fun because of the smell but now after tasting it, they like it too. such a simple sauce but so popular all over the world.

Go to Saigon if you want to eat good foods in Vietnam, and best fish sauce isn't Cat Hai. The best fish sauce in Vietnam are Phú Quốc fish sauce, it's made in Phú Quốc island. and second is Phan Thiết and it's made in Phan Thiết

The good thing about VN is that you normally pay less for the better. Come with a native, you will see what I mean.

cat hai is called patis here in philippines...the unstrained permented fish is called "bagoong isda" here...very delicious when sauteed with garlic and onions..very good with fried fish, steamed green leaves, green mangoes, tomatoes and rice...yum yum! ^_^

there are two types of Nuoc Mam, the kind thats use for flavoring and the kind thats used for everything. The dark one is for flavoring and the chilly and pink colored one is for dipping and eating with noodles

@daoquynh29 it's cleaner than cutting animals up and eating it raw which this guy does a lot of. fish sauce is popular not just in Vietnam but in most other Asian countries too. it's been filtered clean and the saltiness prevents spoilage. last long time at room temperature.

That's one place you do NOT want to go to is the fish sauce factory it smells like fish and it smells really bad. The Sauce taste good and all but don't go to the factory because then you'll lose your appetite and wouldn't want to eat fish sauce ever again.

Think of Fish sauce as a pickel it takes time to furment but dosen't really smell that good but it tast good when you eat it with something.

It's amazing to me how they fill the bottles and close them by hand. I'm a finicky guy who doesn't try anything new but I bet that fish sauce must taste really good. In my experience, anything made in smaller quantities or by hand usually tastes better.
