  • My seven year old son wanted to know why they showed tanks and wars "and stuff" in the 2008 political campaign ads. I said, they've always done it, but today they're more sneaky about how they scare people into voting for a candidate. Then I showed him this -- he was aghast! (But, we talked after viewing this so he's not "scarred"!) But it's good for kids to be aware of the past so they can compare with today. We want our kids to QUESTION what politicians say and do. THANKS for posting this.

  • What's amazing is how effective it is even today. I knew about the ad for years but this is the first time I've actually seen it. It has a very shocking effect indeed. I can't imagine what it must have been like back in '64.

  • This commercial does not shock me in one bit.

I've seen people getting there heads blown off and jumping out of 100 story buildings in real life. Nothing shocks me anymore...not after you witness enough violence in the world, but that is just my opinion.

  • Hey genius, it got a president elected. It doesn't matter what you think today, the video had a historical impact. The average person in America did not see war, or images of war, so this was shocking to them.

Vietnam was the first visual war, which had an extreme importance to why it was received so negatively among the public. You can have your opinion as of today's society, but at least show respect for what is a fact and what the situation was at the time.

  • The GOP totally ripped that one off in '06.

  • Great ad, too bad LBJ did not survive Vietnam, the terrible war he attempted to win without success. He may have used the threat of nuclear war to become elected, but could not save himself form the price he payed for continuing JFK's Vietnam.

  • hahahahah

  • It did run only once, that is to say Johnson only paid for it to be ran once. It ran afterwards on news shows and on other TV programs because people were so shocked. it's a great example of getting free publicity for a campaign.

  • You said it only ran one time, my U.S. Politics professor showed this clip to us and said it ran constantly for 3 days before it was taken off the air because it was kind of controversial. Not sure if he's right, just lettin' ya know what I heard.

  • No, it ran once, on a Sunday night before the election. That is partially what made it so effective.

  • Great version. Others on youtube are too pixlated.

  • what an effective ad. Lanslide Lyndon, who earned that nicjname by stealing an election in Texas, shows that he is not beneath any dirty trick to win.

  • lol damn!
