I have a setup a lot like that, as a prefilter in our patio pond--have had it set up since October, and it seems to be working well so far. You might also want to try putting some filter wool on top of the rocks, to filter out some of the particles and keep the rocks' pores from clogging up as quickly. The clam would probably do well on top of that.
Gorgeous fish, btw! :) I'm guessing they come indoors over the winter?
i have used a very similar set up for 7 yrs now they work well in the smaller ponds

yes they do. except this ear they will be too big to take indoors. :(
