Living a chapagne life on a beer budget! - Now that finacially and socially things have gotten so bad many people are looking to live in places like Chiang Mai and other Southeast Asian countries. I have lived in Southeast Asia for 12 years and after returning recently back to my home country I realized just how important it is to show people what options they have to be able to live a champagne life on a beer budget. I have videos about the costs of rent, food and entertainment.
I currently live in America and thinking of moving to Thailand later because I just fell in love with the culture three years ago. I am currently in college so does anyone know what should I study so that I would find a job once I move to Thailand? =)
I'm an American thinking of leaving America and relocating to Thailand. I've heard good things about Chiang Mai, but wondering if there are also other good places to live? I'd rather live a quiet and peaceful life in the suburbs, or even country, instead of living in the busy city. I'll also be looking for a nice, educated, loyal Thai girl to marry.
Any advice on the best places to live, and to find a nice Thai wife?
"MyThailand" Chiang Mai culture is derived from Lao, most of it's inhabitants are descendants of Laos which was colonized by the French, alot of the architect you see is similar to that in Laos which fancies many of it's structures after the French. But don't tell that to the ppl there.
@Aviatortothesea chiang mai culture based on Laos? what crack have you been smoking. Chiang Mai is Lanna, not Lao. Both belong to Tai. And no, the french had nothing to do with chiang mai, only in Laos :)
didn't know this was a white person's channel, unless you were born and raised in Thailand you won't ever get it, just another white man's view...........wasted my time.
I mean passa "Meung" and passa "Isaan" use the same words but different dialects. For example: don't know Chiang Mai: bo hoo Lao: bo hoo Thai: mai roo older brother Chiang Mai: ai Lao:ai Thai: pei you Chiang Mai:chao Lao:chao Thai:khun, tua Chaing Mai:bai sai Lao:bai sai Thai:bai nai
The dialect in Chiang Mai is closely related to Lao language and is actually a Lao dialect, not Thai. The culture itself is more closer to Lao, the reason Thai ppl do not dismiss Chiang Mai like Isaan is because Chiang Mai culture is considered more proper than Isaan. It's annoying to see Thai ppl claim Chiang Mai but consider Isaan as Lao culture.
I have lived here for 6 years and every year the months of February, March and April border on an environemntal disaster. Masny people leave here to go to the beach for clean air. The Airports in Chiang Rai and Mae Hon Song have to shut because the pollution is so thick the pilots cannot see the runway. The pollution is from the farmers burning their fields but where ever it comes from it is still pollution, and slash and burn farming techniques are very primitive.
Victoryiyn, that makes no sense are you saying that the slah and burn technique does not create pollution? Why does Chiang Mai have such a problem with respiratory illlness? Why do schools not allow children in Chiang Mai to play outside at break time in the months of March and April? Check the air quality, it reachees over 200 parts per million sometimes over 300, in Europe anything over 50 is considered and environmental hazard.
Chiang Mai is a lovely place but for March and April when it becomes one of the dirtiest most polluted cities in the world. Look at this video and ask "where is the blue sky?"
I'm not too sure about, "...the opportunities for self improvement are many". For a very large proportion of the population there are very few good opportunities. Those who do break out of their lives and succeed are the exception, and it's only because their numbers are few that they succeed. Success requires belief in the possibility of success, and that is all too lacking for too many Thais outside of the big cities.
not exactly. U have to look at the mentality of the local population. If they are contented with what they have and don't make progress, they can't be very rich. What i noticed is that thai chinese are generally well-off in thailand. They are smart and willing to work hard. That's the difference.. Opportunities are all around, u just have to look for it and work hard.
"Success requires belief in the possibility of success, and that is all too lacking for too many Thais outside of the big cities." The Chinese Thais have this belief, in addition to having links with the Chinese community which drives so much business in Thailand. And their numbers are few enough to succeed.
Thailand is magical, i falled in love with the country and with my long distance girlfriend, I was living and working in Thai country 9 months too, I be forced to come back my homecountry but I hope to come back to live in Chiang Mai with the woman who owns my heart. Love you Yui!
Yui is probably a bar girl. From my experience as just a tourist tuk tuk are dishonest. I was checking the area on my vacation because I was thinking about making the move, but to see how the average person lives, you get the sense you will either be extortted for money by officials or always looked at like a "farang". I would rather move to Germany.
Not a bar girl, she work as QA supervisor in a factory. You are right it is a shame the average people live too bad, with bad salaries. That is the problem we will be watched like the farangs if we move to live Thailand.
I lived in Chaing Mai for many many years begining in the 80s and ending in the late 90s. The city sure has changed, some for the better much for the worse. There was no part of Thailand as beautiful as Chian Mai back in the day. A tourist trap if you don't know where to look. Western enough to make tourists comfortable, Thai enough to be exotic. When I left the city was quite crouded and polluted, but still the beautiful gem of northern Thailand.
I left my heart in chiang mai.I'm moving back soon, but not soon enough. Just stepping out of the US, more specifically PENNSYLVANIA, and everything seems more beautiful. I only live 6 months in the land of smile and I am a victim of its glorious splendor
Great video. I am off to chiang mai on the 16th May on a painting trip really cant wait to soak it up. I have 6 months there to enjoy. Thanks for posting love it
i was there 2 weeks, falled in love with culture people and the lifestyle, gosh im already feeling i miss my HOME and i was only there for 3 weeks:( at least in 2 years i will move there for ever
Ooh, I miss Chiang Mai so much. Beautifull city! One thing is not so nich about the city. Every year it grows bigger and bigger. It's look like the Bangkok of the north. At lest they have the Doi Suthep. I'm planning to buy a house in Thailand, and I think in Ciang Mai.
sad song..it's like i'm walking in the streets of chiangmai looking for a place to live..a nice place so that i can hang out with thai guys! lol and be with a cute thai guy for the rest of my life.i love thailand..
Victoryjyn -- Totally have to agree with you -- lived in Thailand for the past 16 years with the last 12 up here in Chiang Mai -- wouldn't leave it unless I absolutely had to.
Ok I need to know more people in Thailand. Good video. I lived in Thailand for a year last year doing my internship at Bangkok. I'm from the Netherlands, Europe and I desperately like to go back to Thailand to start working or something. I just love the culture, people and everything.
Can we get in touch that we somehow can exchange ideas or whatever since you already live in Thailand so you long. :) Thank you very much.
Sorry to say, I've never had the opportunity to visit Italy, but through TV, magazines and what I have read; I'm in agreement with you and in a lot of the information I've read here in Thailand, Chiang Mai has been patterned after some of the cities in Italy. Throughout Thailand there are a number of cities that implement a cannel system, similar to Venice.

Chiang Mai is not that polluted my friend. Don't mistake the burning season for pollution. The city is surrounded by farms.

I have lived in Thailand since March 2000 - in Chiangmai for the last 7 years.
Whilst the video shows a fair cros-section of houses, it shows none of the warmth and smiles I see daily from the Thai people.
Dirty? - a little.... Poor?- certainly...
Dangerous?..... I hardly think so - unless you mean the hazards to pedestrians or the heat in April....
Chok dee na khrap to you all :o)

Danger.... where?? in Thailand???? I'm from Holland and it's a pretty safe country but in my view Thailand is nearly as safe.
The only thing is the traffic but one must just be able 2 handle that...
