I wouldn't say they created it, but I think they did have some small influence on emo at least. A lot of emo bands grew up listening to the Cure. They're much better than emo though, both lyrically and musically. Plus look at the video - they look like they're having fun! =].

When the Cure started in the late 70's, they were a New Wave act.. Their Albums 'Pornography' and 'Faith' are at least making the way for Gothic, if not Gothic itself, similar to Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie etc. at the time.

Later, the Cure recorded "happier" songs and albums, like this one from '87, but on the two albums mentioned above there isn't one single song that is not dark or gothic and they are probably their most artistic ones.

I've never seen this video before, but I love it. The idea of playing the song under palm trees on a freezing cold day with snow is the best juxtaposition, and the snowball fight at the end, after such a poignant song, is endearing.
