  • this is a genre all on it's own, completly fuckin original.. wow... just stumbled on this

  • WONDERFUL! Haven't seen this since it was broadcast. Fuck the critics and fuck the haters. Galas rules my world.

  • good

  • /watch?v=tXKHjQ07QDs

  • Thanks so much for posting this!!! This was my first introduction to Diamanda, and I never thought I'd get to see this performance again. I loved the show "Night Music", I believe it was originally called "Sunday Night" because that's when it aired. David Sanborn, who happpens to be one of the greatest saxophonists of his generation is the man that announces her. I've thought about this performance for "literally" decades, so thanks for returning a great memory to me.

  • holy fuck

  • MERAVIGLIOSA SUPERBA <3

  • Great video from a forgotten great tv show.

  • MARVELOUS! I would love the video file from the VHS dub. It's "low quality" but I'm just happy this still can be seen today!

  • I sent my own rave review of her best album PLAGUE MASS to the Punk Globe so I'm hoping they will publish it for the New Year! Can't wait!

  • Apparently so is your English.

  • Shes so amazing :D

  • Her talent for music is apprecated. I LOVE IT.

  • She scares me but I love it.

  • Diamanda Galas is one hell of an extraordinary artist.

Ignorance and stupidity dwell in the minds of those who judge and degrade something they are just not capable of understanding.

  • Ah? Far more interesting to me is why people continue to police what art is/can be.

  • those who can't do, they just talk.

  • @errantcomponent Because although everyone and their mothers continue to chant the same shit about art being universal and unconditional to norms, it very well IS. Artists think they can shit on a canvas and call it the meaning of life and have 50 idiots gawking at it like it's something out of this world. It's stupid, sad, and ridiculous.

  • @CouncilofNine I guess I was commenting on why people would then gather 50 of their like-minded friends to gawk at the gawkers. I don't find that particularly useful or constructive. How about gathering those 50 friends and then creating a response to that ridiculous exhibit of fecal-art? Or going to a gallery or seeing a band you really enjoy. That's community-building; and then the artists in that group can be inspired and create their own art.

  • @CouncilofNine Really, no matter what you create, if it stirs up emotional responses, it's going to then get translated to cerebral deconstructions and intellectual critiques. In other words, you'll get your band of detractors and I suppose that's okay. It can create its own little group of "haters." hah With that said, Diamanda's art is far from "shit on canvas." It has form and context and obviously takes great discipline and talent to create. Passion and skill. Sounds yummy to me.

  • She's in the top5 of artists I would like to see play on my funeral :]

  • It's enough for most musical genii(?) to play either one of those instruments as well as Diamanda does... but two!?!

  • yeye diamanda gals

  • Fantastic. Having followed her for so many years, i really grow more and more fond of it. You are a part of my life, Diamanda

  • THank you for posting. Amazing!

  • Beautiful!

  • Fucking creepy stuff. Galas is an amazing performer.

  • kill yourself

  • Intolerance is evidence of impotence

  • I like it. You don't. So what?

  • I lost count on how many times i've watched this.

    fucking amazing.

  • She walks the keyboard like a spider

  • godess

  • Tout simplement Sublime...

  • diamanda is no.1!!!666

  • This woman should be consecrated as a saint.

  • @Problembeing ... please... stick to alcohol,... stop using crack, cocaine, heroine, methanphetamines or all the shit togehter dude... please, just listen to Mozart, beethoven or vivlaldi... that is music.... this sounds like my saturdays at the bathroom ..... you like heavy shit???? dude listen to Morbid angel or carcass.... not this shit, please...... the world is suffering because of guys like you

  • @chelas36 Erm... What? You're a crazy person. I do listen to Mozart, Beethoven, etc. You are an presumptuous jumped up little prick, aren't you. You have no idea what you're talking about. I do own a Carcass album as it goes, and I like all manner of good music, and Diamanda is not only an exception pianist, she has a 3 and a half octave range, and she doesn't sing like anyone else. What IS your problem, idiot boy?

  • @Problembeing *exceptional

  • i'm in love!

  • This is quite a hair raising performance. I saw this and Diamanda with John Paul Jones on the John Stewart show when they originally aired. Talk about hair raising! Check out that video also. It's truly alarming. These videos are really good seen back to back. Unforgettable stuff.

  • RETRASA

  • como tu abuela!

  • jodete, ve a ver modelitos a otra párte entonces

  • Genial!

  • I think her attitude toward idiots probably would keep her away from reacting on their comments.

  • I LOVE YOU DIAMANDA!!!!

  • I first saw her when she was promoting her album Schrei X,it was 45 minuts of her glasolalic screaming...I was mesmerized...woman is Legend!

  • I was lucky to be in the audience when this show was done. It was the first time I had heard Diamanda and it almost scared me. Also on this show (if I remember correctly) were Sonic Youth, Indigo Girls and Evan Lurie. during a great deal of the show, Daniel Lanois sat directly behind in the bleacher seating. It was an interesting night and a great way to end a week in NY for the AES Show.

  • Holy...! Never knew she appeared on Night Music! I remember she appeared w/ John Paul Jones on John Stewart's old nighttime talk show.

  • She looks so formidable and scary, but I saw an interview with her recently and she was a very warm person. Highly intelligent, humorous, very open and honest. I don't think a lot of artists really live out their stage persona.

  • Okay... but she's no Billy Joel...

    :P Psych

She's so lovely, but I appreciate that she looks so frightening/imposing on her album covers. You know she's not using her beauty to sell records!

  • when was this recorded? thanks for posting

  • soulfull a language beyond

  • the name of this song is : let my people go

  • Anyone know the name of the first song?? Please!!??

  • First song is "La Treizieme revient" ("The thirteenth returns") from "Saint Of the Pit".

  • Thank You for the the info!!!

  • actually its Artémis. :) One of my favourate diamanda tracks.

  • Yes! Thank You! I searched and found the lyrics by Gerard de Nerval thanks to You! But, on the CD "Divine Punishment" and "Saint of the PIt", the song (without text) is labeled as "The Thirteen Returns"- the first line in the poem. Hmmm. Perhaps she (DG) titled the textless track "The Thirteen Returns", but here, with text it is Artemis? Whatever the reasoning, I'm just glad o have the french text! Thanks, again!!

  • Pure passion, pure genius. Thank you thank you thank you for posting.

  • Grandiosa....Ho visto che viene a Roma il 15 maggio, all'auditorium!

    Qualcuno ci va?

Io a 20 euro ci vado volentieri....fatemi sapere che così facciamo gruppo!

  • omg what a woman.

her play the piano is just genius!

    her voice is the best

  • Thank You. She's brilliant.

Saw her in '92 in Boston. She came out screaming w/ naked tits covered in blood, steak knife in hand. Still get chills today.

Excellent "Fair Use" statement as well.

    Cheers,

    Elvis Diablo

  • I also know she wouldn't appreciate you not understanding her "Angry Women" perspective. You should do a little more research, it makes you sound "shallow"...

  • Comment removed

  • I was referring to her long interview in the book "Angry Women" by V. Vale, a cult classic. Maybe you should focus more on her words in interviews than your interpertation of her lyrics.. Thought you would have known about it.. Good luck

  • one of the best clips up on youtube. I freaking love that voice. piano is breathtaking in the first piece..... she is amazing, what can I say.

  • Dear god I love her so much. A hand over my heart in love with her voice.

  • Oh thank you so much for posting this.. THANK YOU SO MUCH, genuinely.

  • OMG she's brilliant :)

  • the begining of that song is soooo damn great... does anyone knows were can i get a partiture? on the net

  • In 2 weeks I get to see her live for the first time. I can't wait! :D

  • ...and she was AWESOME!! :D

  • Yes she was!

  • Ah, since every singer is termed a "diva" today it is so refreshing to see an iconoclastic woman like Diamanda actually embody that role. She is a diamond. From "Artemis" to a spiritual...that's a woman! Got to get that Terrorizer magazine!

  • She is a genius. See you in March again Diamanda!! xx

  • Diamanda Galas is so gorgeous on the cover of Terrorizer! Its their best cover ever. She is so beautiful!

  • One of my favorite performances by her.None of the cheesy opera house-from-Hell pyrotechnics-just the woman and her acoustic piano.Truly haunting and extraordinary.

  • 2:55 is one of the most electric moments of music EVER...am seeing her on March 20th, am SO excited!

  • Ahh, you were there too? Wasn't it brilliant? My first concert of hers; did not disappoint. There were some middle-aged ladies sitting next to me who I think were a little unprepared, hehe. But we weren't even five minutes in and I swear my whole head was vibrating with the power of her voice (was right up front) and I knew from then on it was going to be great night. :)

  • ..this performance is even mistical..amazing

  • I forgot about David Sanborn's Night Music. A short lived show on Sunday Evenings. Too good to last. A great performance! Diamanda is a genius.

  • Gorgeous! Thanks for uploading!

  • Menuda voz :O es impresionante!!

  • you're a numbard.

  • one of my favorite ladies doing my very favorite nerval poem. incredible...

  • she scares the hell out of me, but I adore her

  • Thank you for adding this! Without Galas, the world would be a britneyer place...

  • anyone knows if exist some dvd o video where i can buy this program. Because there so many bands that have been on this show.

  • and like me

  • right...because talent is measured in sales.

tell your ears to get fucked.

  • exactly she dosent give a FUCK for sales!! now go listen some britney spears, spice girls or if you prefer some bee gees

  • Soft Machine-We Know What You Mean Joy Division - Love will tear us apart Tom Waits - Hold On Wolfsheim - The Sparrows and the Nightingales LEGENDARY PINK DOTS - Belladonna let me introduce you to the end -"gods above god" The Black Heart Procession - The Letter Current 93 - Since Yesterday Death in June - Little Black Angel Controlled Bleeding - "1138" Rosetta Stone - Adrenaline
  • She's actually a big copyleft and fair use and thought Metallica's lawsuit was bullshit. She's totally indie, keeps most of her cash (instead of record co's) makes her money on shows and merchandise and has stated that she's not totally opposed to giving her music away on the Internet because of her touring and loyal fan base.

  • This is excellent, thank you for adding!!

  • Love her. always and forever.

  • I love Diamanda Galas. Such power, such strength.

    She shines with such inspiration.

    I lack the words.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. She is probably the best singer ever. (Or at leats that I know of. ;)

  • Beautifull! a true artist

  • umm.. yeah..

  • good lord she is amazing.

  • Top of the top!!!

  • It's funny, I've always loved Diamanda's voice but not what she does with it. Or should I say, her choice in music and song writing.

Amazing talent. Will there be another?

  • esto me traslada a otra dimension...

    es fenomenal diamanda galas

  • You fools!!! you understand nothing of what she does. She a TRUE artist. No bounds. No even wanting you to understand or like her. She's a goddess!

  • Surely some of the most uncommercial stuff broadcast on a major American TV network within the last quarter-century?

  • That's what I loved about Night Music. I don't know if a show like that would ever find an audience in this Britney-fied world of popular culture, but the late-80s, prior to the grunge/alternative explosion of '92, seemed to be a time when people were yearning for something different and this show introduced me to plenty of artists that fit the bill.

  • Yeah, this was pretty uncommercial. But I think the ultimate example would be Night Music's Conway Twitty/Residents team up. What could be less commercial than that?

  • Thank you for your opinion. Can you support your case however?

  • You're funny. I like Diamanda alot and in fact she'll be performing next week here in Chicago on Thur. and Sat. After awhile, I have to turn her off after I've had my fill of her.

  • I agree that she's a little difficult to take in large doses, but like a quality single-malt scotch, a fine cigar, or a particularily rich dessert, an occasional indulgence can bring untold rewards to a refined and informed palate. Let the masses have their Bud Lite culture. We'll savour the delicacies.

  • Absolutely Fucking Brilliant. I can't wait to see her live!

  • What a freakish voice and performance. You either love this stuff or hate it. There's nothing in between...

  • The first track is 'Artemis' written by Gerard Nerval in 1854. This was part of her dedication to her brother.

  • Smart ,Dark beauty of an avant-garde artist that average people would ignologe in 150 years!!I already love her for 2decades, and she is the...!!Brilliant!!We need more free minded smart artist ,in order to get rid of the cheese that is infecting our children as a good music!!That's right!!

  • I remember watching this program here in Portugal, I have it recorded somewhere in a VHS tape. David Sanborn used to mix his gests and I remember thinking how would he mix Diamanda with Sonic Youth, Evan Lurie Quintet, Indigo Girls or Daniel Lanois (the other gests on that show)... well, he went for a clean performance, and that was magnificent! Great post

  • ogm, i can't help loving this woman. i'd do anything to watch her in a show (i live in argentina, so it's impossible to see avant-garde artists here... people here just doesn't understand this music)

  • I understand perfectly what you mean, I live in Portugal and I feel exactly the same...this woman is a kind of genious ... she puts "a spell on me"...she's brilliant...I saw her live, just one time, in 2005 and I can't forget the magic moment it was ... her vocal capacity is something from another world ... so powerful, so hot, with so big extension ...her atitud absolutely energic ... a kind of surreal power on stage ...

  • Try to listen in my opinion her best album "Defixiones, will and testament" ... I have no words to express what I feel when I listen it...

    please...listen

  • Nice share!

Thanks for hanging onto that VHS tape and taking the trouble to convert it.

What a sadly missed show and what a dynamic performer she is. I saw her recently and it took a week for the goosebumps to disappear.

  • Words cannot describe the dark beauty of Diamanda's talents.

  • yes...words are totally insuficient, she's unique, a talent's enigma

  • The most compelling female performer to grace a stage.

  • I just read on the official website that she'll be performing in Miami, FL next year on Feb. 28th!

  • Hello mad, that news doesn't help MOI much!!...being in Montreal lol. The closest she's coming my way this year is NYC in August, and YES I shall be there. I mustn't grumble though, I have seen her oh.....5x solo, and in Toronto touring Sporting Life with John Paul Jones. I do regret having missed her at the Knitting Factory!! NYC this past Valentines Day, that would have been spectacular, cheers.

  • Well, I live all the way in Hudson, so it doesn't help me much either. I was just announcing the location in general. Oh well, my bad. :s

  • Hi mad. The concert in Miami has been postponed-I get updates regularly. She will perform here in Chicago next week on Thur. and Sat. Saturday's sold out and I probably will call in sick from work(I work on PM's), if I can't find someone to switch with. She's performing at Chicago's Museum of contemporary Art.

  • Thank you for posting this! *love her*

  • totally in love with her

  • What's the first song?

  • The song is Artemis.

  • Thanks.Isn't she great?Well maybe someone of you could help me find a very old song called "Song from the blood of those murdered".I will wait.

  • No, the first song in "La Treizieme revient" and the second is "Let my people go"

  • thank you so much for posting this! we need all the diamanda that is in the world on fucking youtube. she is a genius.
