Diamanda is a total FAKE. Her recent behaviors are very contrary to the messages of compassion or acceptance that she claims her 'art' is inspired by, instead it is all self-glorification. Look at her homophobic rants, google her name with 'cyberstalking' or 'harassment' and you'll see all the proof you need, screenshots, e-mails, It's clear she hates everyone. What a pity.
Thanks so much for posting this!!! This was my first introduction to Diamanda, and I never thought I'd get to see this performance again. I loved the show "Night Music", I believe it was originally called "Sunday Night" because that's when it aired. David Sanborn, who happpens to be one of the greatest saxophonists of his generation is the man that announces her. I've thought about this performance for "literally" decades, so thanks for returning a great memory to me.
@errantcomponent Because although everyone and their mothers continue to chant the same shit about art being universal and unconditional to norms, it very well IS. Artists think they can shit on a canvas and call it the meaning of life and have 50 idiots gawking at it like it's something out of this world. It's stupid, sad, and ridiculous.
@CouncilofNine I guess I was commenting on why people would then gather 50 of their like-minded friends to gawk at the gawkers. I don't find that particularly useful or constructive. How about gathering those 50 friends and then creating a response to that ridiculous exhibit of fecal-art? Or going to a gallery or seeing a band you really enjoy. That's community-building; and then the artists in that group can be inspired and create their own art.
@CouncilofNine Really, no matter what you create, if it stirs up emotional responses, it's going to then get translated to cerebral deconstructions and intellectual critiques. In other words, you'll get your band of detractors and I suppose that's okay. It can create its own little group of "haters." hah With that said, Diamanda's art is far from "shit on canvas." It has form and context and obviously takes great discipline and talent to create. Passion and skill. Sounds yummy to me.
@Problembeing ... please... stick to alcohol,... stop using crack, cocaine, heroine, methanphetamines or all the shit togehter dude... please, just listen to Mozart, beethoven or vivlaldi... that is music.... this sounds like my saturdays at the bathroom ..... you like heavy shit???? dude listen to Morbid angel or carcass.... not this shit, please...... the world is suffering because of guys like you

I was lucky to be in the audience when this show was done. It was the first time I had heard Diamanda and it almost scared me. Also on this show (if I remember correctly) were Sonic Youth, Indigo Girls and Evan Lurie. during a great deal of the show, Daniel Lanois sat directly behind in the bleacher seating. It was an interesting night and a great way to end a week in NY for the AES Show.
She looks so formidable and scary, but I saw an interview with her recently and she was a very warm person. Highly intelligent, humorous, very open and honest. I don't think a lot of artists really live out their stage persona.
Yes! Thank You! I searched and found the lyrics by Gerard de Nerval thanks to You! But, on the CD "Divine Punishment" and "Saint of the PIt", the song (without text) is labeled as "The Thirteen Returns"- the first line in the poem. Hmmm. Perhaps she (DG) titled the textless track "The Thirteen Returns", but here, with text it is Artemis? Whatever the reasoning, I'm just glad o have the french text! Thanks, again!!

That's what I loved about Night Music. I don't know if a show like that would ever find an audience in this Britney-fied world of popular culture, but the late-80s, prior to the grunge/alternative explosion of '92, seemed to be a time when people were yearning for something different and this show introduced me to plenty of artists that fit the bill.
Yeah, this was pretty uncommercial. But I think the ultimate example would be Night Music's Conway Twitty/Residents team up. What could be less commercial than that?

Hmm...she tries too hard. No doubt she has a great voice, but she put too many affects upon it and "uglifies" it to create a "style. My objection is that "style" is not something you create. It exists in you, and the great artists can allow it to flow through them by simply getting out of the way. She sings and plays from a place of ego. Too bad. She's talented.
You're funny. I like Diamanda alot and in fact she'll be performing next week here in Chicago on Thur. and Sat. After awhile, I have to turn her off after I've had my fill of her.
I agree that she's a little difficult to take in large doses, but like a quality single-malt scotch, a fine cigar, or a particularily rich dessert, an occasional indulgence can bring untold rewards to a refined and informed palate. Let the masses have their Bud Lite culture. We'll savour the delicacies.
Smart ,Dark beauty of an avant-garde artist that average people would ignologe in 150 years!!I already love her for 2decades, and she is the...!!Brilliant!!We need more free minded smart artist ,in order to get rid of the cheese that is infecting our children as a good music!!That's right!!
I remember watching this program here in Portugal, I have it recorded somewhere in a VHS tape. David Sanborn used to mix his gests and I remember thinking how would he mix Diamanda with Sonic Youth, Evan Lurie Quintet, Indigo Girls or Daniel Lanois (the other gests on that show)... well, he went for a clean performance, and that was magnificent! Great post
ogm, i can't help loving this woman. i'd do anything to watch her in a show (i live in argentina, so it's impossible to see avant-garde artists here... people here just doesn't understand this music)
I understand perfectly what you mean, I live in Portugal and I feel exactly the same...this woman is a kind of genious ... she puts "a spell on me"...she's brilliant...I saw her live, just one time, in 2005 and I can't forget the magic moment it was ... her vocal capacity is something from another world ... so powerful, so hot, with so big extension ...her atitud absolutely energic ... a kind of surreal power on stage ...
Hello mad, that news doesn't help MOI much!!...being in Montreal lol. The closest she's coming my way this year is NYC in August, and YES I shall be there. I mustn't grumble though, I have seen her oh.....5x solo, and in Toronto touring Sporting Life with John Paul Jones. I do regret having missed her at the Knitting Factory!! NYC this past Valentines Day, that would have been spectacular, cheers.
Hi mad. The concert in Miami has been postponed-I get updates regularly. She will perform here in Chicago next week on Thur. and Sat. Saturday's sold out and I probably will call in sick from work(I work on PM's), if I can't find someone to switch with. She's performing at Chicago's Museum of contemporary Art.

Surely some of the most uncommercial stuff broadcast on a major American TV network within the last quarter-century?
freeform83 4 years ago 4

Thank you for your opinion. Can you support your case however?

You're funny. I like Diamanda alot and in fact she'll be performing next week here in Chicago on Thur. and Sat. After awhile, I have to turn her off after I've had my fill of her.

I agree that she's a little difficult to take in large doses, but like a quality single-malt scotch, a fine cigar, or a particularily rich dessert, an occasional indulgence can bring untold rewards to a refined and informed palate. Let the masses have their Bud Lite culture. We'll savour the delicacies.

What a freakish voice and performance. You either love this stuff or hate it. There's nothing in between...

The first track is 'Artemis' written by Gerard Nerval in 1854. This was part of her dedication to her brother.

Try to listen in my opinion her best album "Defixiones, will and testament" ... I have no words to express what I feel when I listen it...

Nice share!
Thanks for hanging onto that VHS tape and taking the trouble to convert it.
What a sadly missed show and what a dynamic performer she is. I saw her recently and it took a week for the goosebumps to disappear.

I just read on the official website that she'll be performing in Miami, FL next year on Feb. 28th!
madammelva 4 years ago
Hello mad, that news doesn't help MOI much!!...being in Montreal lol. The closest she's coming my way this year is NYC in August, and YES I shall be there. I mustn't grumble though, I have seen her oh.....5x solo, and in Toronto touring Sporting Life with John Paul Jones. I do regret having missed her at the Knitting Factory!! NYC this past Valentines Day, that would have been spectacular, cheers.

Well, I live all the way in Hudson, so it doesn't help me much either. I was just announcing the location in general. Oh well, my bad. :s
