@evilgenius151 Me too, i was just listening to some good music, then i was like OH SHIT NUJABES SAMPLED THIS i couldnt remember what song it was from though,
La musica come uno specchio... difficile mentire... Jamal è vero musicista perchè consapevole della grandezza e piccolezza umana. Grazie Ciao... Salvo
p.s....also caught him at the Sheldon Concert Hall a few years back w/Idris Muhammed and...damn, can't recall the bass player. Old heads. SWEEET! Hear me when I tell ya.
This cat is the reason I PLAYED jazz. Hear me? 14 year old classical pianist and this brotha with classical chops is droppin' it the way "I" hear it? I was done kid....DONE. Saw him at the La Casa club (Jefferson Ave., St. Louis) early eighties. Mid solo he starts riffin' phrases from Ravel's BOLERO. Like I said...DONE. Ahmad Jamal is a true treasure.
For those less familiar, check out Swahililand cut from "Jamal plays Jamal" LP. Steinway, Rhodes. Smooooth as silk! LOL!
@beeminor7th Great comments regarding Ahmad Jamal & the impact he made. I mentioned his 'Darn That Dream' YouTube performance to my sister just yesterday - suggested that she check it out - hands floating over the keys, finding all the right ones. 'Autumn Rain' is one of my favorites by Ahmad. My wife and I saw Ahmad at the EJ Thomas Hall in Akron, OH sometime in the 90's and he was excellent. I wonder what the great classical pianists would have thought of jazz. I'll check out Swahililand.
La sensibilité et le phrasé d'Ahmad Jamal sont remarquable. Magique cette interprétation du" Love Thème" de Kachaturian. Quand la musique est amour .... n'importe où dans le monde.
Wonderful piece of music. This is another cat I slept on. I'd only heard "Poinciana" by him on one of the "Giants Of Jazz" CD's from Time/Life up until today and the occasional song you'll hear on the music channels on satellite maybe. I'll definitely be checking out some more of his stuff though if this is any indication of the level of artistry he consistently displays.
Eclipse from Modal Soul samples the first few seconds of this version of the Spartacus Love Theme, and The Final View from Metaphorical Music samples the Yusuf Lateef version.
lol no its not. its using the "sample" from the original spartacus love theme. its been done by many people. funny thing is that all of them sound great but still unique. goes to show the power of music.
I saw him when he was in the Melbourne Jazz festival. He got an amazing improv skill with his band. After the concert me and my piano teacher talked to the band members, sadly Ahmad is not with them. They said they didn't train for their concerts, they just go for it live and raw. It's much better than the performances in usual jazz bars that plays rubish.

I agree, this is all about this beautiful music and wonderful musicians. But music helps get me through the day, in the foreground and in the background. Through the bad times and the good times. So I love to see those who sit down and listen intently and those who carry it through the day while the music carries them along. Different stroke for different folks, but the music is always "ear-ravishingly" beautiful.

@heraldojesus21 Wentto his concert in Perpignan. More than 30 years had gone by since the last time I heard him. I was amazed how far he had taken his music to this so rich sphere. Then shortly after the concert I heard he was not going on tour any more! Is this true?
I been listening to this all day (xmas day 2009). Real sentimental I guess, while going through a divorce, this song really touches me, it goes great with a cigar and scotch.
cuz Jesus really gives a shit about people's recreational activities on Christmas -its not like people are starving or there are wars are going on.... you're right Jesus is probably focusing all of his divine judgment towards scotch drinkers
@Domenicozzo Jesus Christ wasn't born in Nazareth, wasn't born 2009 ago, wasn't born on the 25th of December, but yes, the sound could have been there!
Historical Facts. Jesus was born during the census which did not take place in 0 A.D. The Bethlehem thing is in the Bible. The calculation of the birth day is related to the Pass Over.
Had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Jamal in concert twice in the space of 6 months a couple years back and it was a great experience. Truly an amazing musician.
Salaam: Many of the mature contemporary artists of the era comprehend what it means to actually take license with a theme, and then render or make tribute to it by carefully enhancing the original theme, as they improvise around- Yet, they are extremely maticulous, repectful, and artfully creative while centering on every thematic bridge, cord, harmonious melody, and base-line. They will never render a theme unrecognizable. They live within its components, thus their approach is always organic.
Wa alaikum: I must concur with your observation of Jamals creative intent. The God given love that Spartacus and Varinia shared and its predestined outcome is not lost in Jamals interpretation. One can at once feel the adversity, triumph, tragedy and hope that encompass their story. In fact, as one whose culture is more inclined to jazz, I can better follow the informal yet sophisticated conversation among his trio of musicians than the original orchestral or overly introspective versions.
I've listened to and was aware of Ahmad Jamal, since I was 8yrs. old and I am near 60 now. He elucidates the theme of "Spartacus" with the feeling it was intended to have, but in a jazz motif or rendition. I heard other renditions, too and the better ones use a balanced license to achieve the sentiments or complimentary originality of the theme. The theme is one of those poetically musical scores that will move you, if you listen with your heart, especially when you know the story line behind it.
This interpretation is genius..It is so different from the last one I just listened to, i mean there are a million more extra chords used...that made this piece so terrific. With GUSTO!!
Comparisons, futile as they may be, are quite inevitable when one artist records a different version of another´s established masterwork. Were Evans to record a version of "Poinciana" f.e. it would be automatically compared to Jamal´s version by all informed parties.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I am not an Informed Party member, but the difference between 2 musical pieces with respect to creative intent, wherein 1 piece is erroneously thought to be comparable to the other, inevitably leads to false analogies. We cant juxtapose Evans solo setting to Jamals trio, nor should we try. While apples & oranges are both fruit, comparable in terms of taste and ripeness, an apple cant be blamed for not making good orange juice. Can you assess Alex Norths orchestral sound track against Evans solo?
Sure. The movie score suppose to enhance dramatic content of the scene, while jazz improvisation on a given theme (whether with or without rhythm section) belong to the same category and therefore are in fact comparable (they both oranges, if you prefer to continue with the fruit theme).
As a photographer and jazz lover, I've had the pleasure of being 'torn' between listening devoutly to the lyricism of the AHMAD JAMAL trio, and capturing the JOY and sheer delight on the faces of the audience at Waterplace Park in Providence, RI. Less than a year later, I watched (and listened) BLISSFULLY as my friend pushed back tears while savoring AHMAD's rendition of MY FOOLISH HEART. The April set, at Boston's REGATTABar was her first opportunity to experience AHMAD LIVE.
Wow.... That took my breath away. I actually forgot to breathe!! The sound isn't harsh to my ears, like what I'm stuck listening to on the radio, and it's easy to get carried away in the music. I'm not a wicked expert in music (Like the other well constructed comments. I'm kind of intimidated... haha) but this song's so smooth, I can't help but lean back and forget to do my work. Haha
Was on his concert in Hollywood last year in Catalina Jazz Club ......... Heis teh coolest .......Manolo Badrena was on percussion crazy guy, love Manolo also ................
It is from Jamals gift for spacing the notes within a jazz modal framework that we have great albums like Kind of Blue and Maiden Voyage. McCoy Tyner and bassist Jimmy Garrison ingeniously utilized this approach to enrich the sheets of sound that flowed from the saxophone of their boss, John Coltrane. While Bill Evans, paused his notes with great emotional sophistication, none could measure up to Brother Ahmad. Thank you for revolutionizing the style of jazz music with such sober dignity.
i love bill evans. i don't think there is a better exponent of modal jazz, that element of spacing the notes and imbuing emotion in notes than evans. jamal was the pioneer. jamal's beauty is in his feel for a lyrical simplicity. he plays each note as a solitary exploration for meaning. if jazz could ever be defined in barthian terms, here is the death of the author and birth of beauty.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It was actually George Russell who pioneered the modal approach on the behest of Miles Davis, whos autobiography described Jamals modal command as a spirit that we can reach out to, but never touch. IMO, the charismatic swing of Jamals solos are more daring and inventive. Evans trio sounded like a trio, but Jamal made you hear a full orchestra. Also, he could reach into his soul and funk up the joint as he did with drummer Idris Muhammad. As with Pops and Bird, chops precede undeniable influence

Well put. Yes, the love theme is not lost in Jamal's interpretation.

This interpretation is genius..It is so different from the last one I just listened to, i mean there are a million more extra chords used...that made this piece so terrific. With GUSTO!!

Beatiful version, even if it doesn´t measure up to Bill Evans classic interpretation. This said, still worth hearing more than once.

Comparisons, futile as they may be, are quite inevitable when one artist records a different version of another´s established masterwork. Were Evans to record a version of "Poinciana" f.e. it would be automatically compared to Jamal´s version by all informed parties.

BilaalUSA 2 years ago
Sure. The movie score suppose to enhance dramatic content of the scene, while jazz improvisation on a given theme (whether with or without rhythm section) belong to the same category and therefore are in fact comparable (they both oranges, if you prefer to continue with the fruit theme).

I just played this, and I gotta say, apples and orange juice aside, Jamal's interpretation is waaaaay better than mine.

I agree, you can´t compare anybody with Bill Evans.
He was a genius and his version of SPARTACUS is out of this world.

Haha
