  • Excellent video. Thank you.

  • any dirt will work like poting soil

    thats what i was told

  • How much did those plug sheets cost? Great video!

  • Thank you so much! I had tomato plants grow this year from tomatoes that I had just let rot on the ground (actually pot) last year. I didn't bother cleaning the falling tomatoes and didn't think anything of it. Well, they are doing so well that next year I'm going to do it the proper way. I feel terrible tossing out little clusters of sprouts that are STILL poping out. I tried separating them but they are so delicate and too tightly packed together. Thank you for your video!!

  • @nevroth If you want to try and save some of them. Dig up a small cluster then cut off the weaker plants right at the soil level. Then just replant the 1 plant left you want to keep. Should work! :-)

  • Pot bound? I am pot bound. Plants usually get root bound.

  • agh! miracle gro,blasphemy!

have you looked at Soil block makers ? no need for plastic seed cells or sanitizing etc. the roots air-prune and obviously cannot get pot-bound. im loving them

  • @tribalwind LOL, yes that was the first and only time I used miracle gro soil. :-P I haven't tried soil blocks yet. Did you buy a block maker or make one?

  • @HomesteadAcres yes i bought the 3/4" and 2" blockers. they were $25 and $30 . the 4" blocker is $150 or some crazy amount, i decided to make one the other day,it works fine!

sooo happy i bought those little ones, such a joy to use and work Great! i went with the dude at pottingblocks . com

  • you guys are awesome! i have a question i live onthe outskirts of Vancouver and i want to get the trays you have for starting seeds... now my question is since i do not have a greenhouse would the seeds grow if i hung a bunch of trays inside infront of my living room window?? thanks :)

  • @renagade12 Sorry for the very late reply! Yes they will grow if you have a bright window. But if you can use grow lights the plants would do better. I used to start mine in just a sunny window to.

  • @HomesteadAcres

Oh great! No need to apologize just really appreciate the info, thank you :)

    stay safe

    Vaughn

  • Its December 31st 2009...and after watching your video Im starting to get the itch to start some seeds...LOL...just need to wait awhile I guess....I plan to have my greenhouse up by Febuary 1st...I hope

  • You have to do whatever works for you and use whatever you can find. I get my containers from a friend of mine who runs a landscaping company all the flates and trays and large 5 gallon contains I want for free. There are MANY good recipes for seed starter mixes there easy enough to make. Again whatever works for you.

  • if you can find vermiculite it is in my opinion the best seed starter medium. It is very light and holds moisture very well! Try it if you have some.

  • ya, my hardening didn't do very well this year, had to buy plants :(

  • Great Info! What zone are you in? 3? How many weeks before your last frost date do your start your tomtatoes seeds?

    Looks great!!!

  • Thanks! We're in zone 5. Our last frost date is May 24th. But we can have frosts into early June. Last year our tomatoes were hit with a hard frost a week or two after planting out side. We had them covered really well but it still got them. They died back to the ground. Luckily they came back just fine from the root stock. It set them back in time but we still got a harvest.

Normally I would start my seeds 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date. I'm about 3 weeks late this year.

  • I bought a bag of Jiffy Organic seed starter last week at KMart. I guess I better go back and see if they have more.

Funny thing is, I haven't shopped at KMart in years. There was an accident that blocked my path to another store....hmmm.

  • Could not find seed starter at all this year. I did find a kit of "Jiffy pellets" so I started my seeds in that. When they got too big for the pellets, I used plain potting soil, and peat pots, to re-pot them. They are doing really well, and I'll be planting them in the garden soon.

  • Guys, I'm betting it was hard to find the seed starter mix because EVERYBODY is gardening this year. I've heard/read garden seed sales are up 30% this year.

  • I did read that about down there. I think it's great that more people are starting gardens!

I'm not sure if its the same thing up here though...I haven't been able to find any stats for Canada. We've noticed that all the stores/garden centers seem to be running 3 to 4 weeks behind "normal". Empty shelves, no stock. I went to one of the largest greenhouses in the area last week and they only had a 1/4 of the plants they normally would. Just some flowers, wouldn't have more in for a week.

  • Last year was very different. ALL the garden centers were busier then normal. One local bulk store sold out of all it's seed potatoes in just a few days. They couldn't get more in either. Everyone went garden nuts up here. lol All the dealers said tillers were selling great to.

So far this year the garden centers seem to be dead...Might just be our crazy spring that has things behind. Or stores worried about not being able to sell the stock...

  • A++++++

  • great tips! We are going to start our garden soon now that we moved to a new home. Ill be sure to watch this again before I start!
