Darren, Nick, and Dan were all surprisingly good, and I'm pretty harsh with my criticism. I was pleasantly surprised, especially considering how awfully Nick did in Les Miserables, and well, let's face it, who thought Potter would be training for the ballet?
I love all 3 finchs in there own but in how to succeed so far im loving dan the best.. but probbably cause one, i saw it 3 times with him, im used to his voice and energy, darren sounsd amazing though! and nick i havent yet to see yet but the clips i have are just okay. i think each put there own into the character. each different.
I love Darren Criss, I mean I was a huge starkid before he was famous, and in reality he has a better singing voice than Dan. However, in all honesty, I would much rather see Dan in this show than Darren. While I love Darren, it's Daniel Fucking Radcliffe. He's a legend, and he stole my heart all the way back in 01.
I have respect for both Darren Criss and Nick Jonas. Both are wonderful as Finch! Beau Bridges is good as J.B. In my opinion, Dan and John are the best and perfect cast for these roles!! No one can top them! :)
There are so many comments about Darren and Daniel in this video, but I figured I'd put my 2 cents into this. Darren had 2 weeks of rehearsal. That's it. Call him weak, call him horrendous. I would say he did one hell of a job. We all know Darren can vary his range, so the fact that he didn't do it this ONE night, doesn't mean he sucks. I saw him on his second to last show. HE KILLED IT. He can dance, sing and act. Period. Good job baby
I wish Daniel or Darren would bring this to the West End already. Broadway got to see Dan in Equus after he'd been doing it here, so why can't we have him in How to Succeed? If it comes over here and has neither of them in it I'll be really annoyed.
For the amount of time Darren had for this role I think he KILLED IT! his energy and excitement for each role he has just makes his acting and singing amazing to behold. His enthusiasm is absolutely contagious. I honestly believe that Darren took his strengths and played them in the best way possible. If you don't agree? Is it just me, or is he a LITTLE underwhelming... I loved him in that Harry Potter musical, but his vibrato is almost not present, he's sliding up and down to hit notes, he's pushing and not phonating completely... His dancing is fine, though. I'm sorry "How To Succeed", you can't just throw somebody in a role because they'll sell tickets. These teens from Glee might be good in their imaginary high school, but seriously, how can Blaine and Nick Jonas be compared to Matthew Broderick!?
I really like his energy, and his dancing is pretty good. He seems to be losing his breath, and he's doing a lot of scooping which is inappropriate for the matieral and doesn't sound pleasing to the ear. Thats the musical directors fault though for not telling him to hit each pitch acurately, and helping him figure out where to breath. All the music on GLEE is pre recorded and even though he has done live theater before you can tell he was under rehearsed.
Darren seems to be having more fun than Daniel did. He does lose his voice a little which tells me he's either sick or a little out of shape. I think he is enjoying himself more which, to me, makes his acting better!
If people are going to hate on videos, they should really just keep their comments to themselves.
I think Darren was amazing. He used to be a theatre boy before, and so what if he isn't like Daniel? I agree Daniel was magnificent, but I think Darren was magnificent in his own way. He did his own take. Maybe it's not traditional broadway, but can't people be more open-minded?

@JRWinters95 - I hear you. I love Darren, too, and I'm sure he did his best with only two weeks of rehearsal. He wouldn't be right for Oklahoma, as he himself admits, but he was fine in this. There's something interesting about Darren Criss and it's that quality that transcends his work, whether that work is good or bad.
This was not at all his strongest performance. He had much better, I saw him on the 21st, the day before the show closed, and it was absolutely incredible. He is definitely ready for broadway, he just had less rehearsal time than Dan and Nick, and it's amazing that he was able to develop the character as well as he did in just 3 weeks. He doesn't have a traditional broadway voice, but that doesn't mean he wasn't fabulous.
wow, surprisingly weak. Really a feeble vocal. I saw Radcliffe twice, and I have to say, Daniel SMOKED Darren Criss on the vocals. I thought he would have been much better. Perhaps he was sick, but I agree - if this is his real singing Criss is not ready for Broadway. I also noticed that Criss does not do the same choreograpy when the secretary does her obligato and the "bell swings". Radcliffe does the bell swings, Criss does not. Color me disappointed.

I'm well aware that if he wasn't in glee he wouldn't have been as famous and might not have gotten the role but that is not the point of my post. I suppose what my point is is that Darren picking up the unfortunate habit on not belting notes because he's used to the studio gives me another reason to greatly dislike glee.
Many of you say that Daniel was stronger voiced. Compared to this single performance (which is the only one I can see) I grudgingly agree. However I want to see a different performance AND Darren being on Broadway a few months before I will fully decide on the better Finch.
Next, the way Darren made the song poppy? Not good I guess and I know Darren sang pop songs before but... I blame Glee for this unfortunate habit of Darren's. They autotune the shit out of everyone's voice!
Darren and Nick are my two top boys I LOVE THEM SOOOOO MUCH!!! And I love Daniel too because of Harry Potter!!! So the fact that they all played the same role and killed it makes me happy! <3
1. I never quite understood why people watch videos of things they don't like. Shouldn't you be spending your time watching things you like.
2. Darren's amazing. His voice is heavenly. He may not be the best dancer out there, but something about his dance style has me constantly watching. I mean he is sex on a stick and sings like a dream ; )
@CANEPPATV He had less time to settle into the role than Radcliffe, and Radcliffe had voice lessons and dance lessons for a year before getting into the part, while Criss is used to an entirely different style of singing. I only saw Criss live, and his acting was more than passable,his vocal issues could be overlooked; it's just that his entire schedule; rehearsal, performances, andall, just seemed to be shoe-horned in a narrow window of time, while Daniel had months playing the part.
Having seen Radcliffe and then this video, I've got to say I really do think Radcliffe did a better job. I understand that Radcliffe had a lot more time in the role, but even still, Radcliffe's take on the role just felt better for the play.
What people don't realize is that this was one of his first performances. I went to one of his last shows and he did an amazing job! He was a little off in this song, but when I went his voice was flawless.
Plus, Daniel Radcliffe had more time to get into the swing of things, whereas Darren had two weeks of rehearsals and was only in the play for three weeks.

Im watchin darren and nick and daniel and to be honest....nick is best vocally he can dance to....i think daniel dance to... i think they are all super talented tho. Darren voice is kinda gettin lost in all of it. Im very proud of nick tho...he has never been comfortable dancing haha. but darren was great too. I cant wait to go see this show
I really like Darren, the problem that I have, is that it sounds too trained, I preferred Darren's Starkid performance where his voice was raw and pure. Daniel's performance was outstanding and reaches the higher notes easier than Darren does which is surprising as Darren's a counter tenor....
@roxford13 I kind of assumed Darren was a counter tenor because he can reach high notes with Starkid and with Glee with pretty good ease which is normal for a counter tenor...maybe he is somewhere in between!
I really love Darren and I think he did great in this song but I've seen Dan do it so many times that i kind of like him better in it. Maybe i could make a better decision if i had seen them both do the whole show...?
@redsteelchair i totally agree..i was totally disappointed when i heard this because i am a huge darren criss fan, but his vocal performance was awful in this production. he was very nasal and couldn't hit half the notes :[

I saw this on the 20th and Darren was very good, the best and most charismatic performer in the show in spite of some occasional softness in volume. Speaking as someone who's been going to Bway for the last 30 years, he's got great raw stage abilities - plenty of talent, energy and genuine charm. He's no David Morse but neither is ANYONE else, and this production is rather flatly earnest than dry, zany or satiric, and that was the director's choice. Great bit: Darren imitating Wally Womper.
Does anyone also notice that they aren't sending Darren back in forth on the table like they did with Dan and Bigley's secretary? Do you think he's too big????? :)

Very weak singing and he just didn't capture the character. Robert Morse originated the role on Broadway and starred in the movie, see youtubes of his performance in the movie- fantastic, funny and just fun! This is not even close. Even the choreography here seems off, it's not funny like the movie choreography.
how to succeed in broadway without really trying is really what darren is doing. he is stunning, his performance was amazing, we will see him on broadway again :)
Being a fan of Darren for many years now I am incredibly impressed with how well he blended onto the Broadway stage. He really knows what he's doing of course there's always room from improvement but for two weeks of rehearsal he did fantastic! I think he really knows how to put on a good show!

So proud of Darren and how far he has come since playing Harry Freaking Potter in AVPM. I love how he still tries to be a part of Starkid despite his uber busy Glee schedual. So wishing I lived in NY so I could have seen Darren in this. Considering his short rehearsal time Darren gives such a great performance and you can hear the audience loves him!
i noticed a change in choreography. when danielle whent on the table he would be flung from side to side by actors on either side of him as they where doing with the woman, however, darren is alot taller then daniell so he kinda did his own little thing by himself. lol

He sings the song too much like he is in choir, and less like a showtune. I was expecting way better from what I saw of him in AVPM. Also, his dancing sucks ass for such great choreography. I wish they would put someone who deserves the part in this show because it really is spectacular and deserves better.
Look at all those dance moves, the stage actions AND not to mention the words he had to learn. Darren can barely ever remember the words to his own songs, and considering he only had 2 weeks to learn it all. I think he did a pretty awesome job, so proud of Darren.
I saw this in August, when Daniel was still Finch, and I must say that Darren really does the part justice. For all of you saying that it doesn't sound that good, 1) it isn't a professional recording. you're not allowed to record/take pictures, so this person was probably trying not to get caught and it messed with the sound quality, 2) Darren has always had a more pop voice. We all know this. Still love him no matter what (:!

Ok I am a die hard starkid and I love Darren but this isn't that great:/ Obviously I can't judge how good he is at this part just by a YouTube video. I know he isn't trained for musical theatre but I really hope he got better over the different show because he seemed to be struggling a few times...
@lifeisastage1 You can't judge anything by a bootleg video, that is not what they are for. You'd need a professional recording to get a real feeling of how he sounds and even then it is not the same as being in the theatre.

I suppose what my point is is that Darren picking up the unfortunate habit on not belting notes because he's used to the studio gives me another reason to greatly dislike glee.

OK a few things.
Many of you say that Daniel was stronger voiced. Compared to this single performance (which is the only one I can see) I grudgingly agree. However I want to see a different performance AND Darren being on Broadway a few months before I will fully decide on the better Finch.
Next, the way Darren made the song poppy? Not good I guess and I know Darren sang pop songs before but... I blame Glee for this unfortunate habit of Darren's. They autotune the shit out of everyone's voice!

1. I never quite understood why people watch videos of things they don't like. Shouldn't you be spending your time watching things you like.
2. Darren's amazing. His voice is heavenly. He may not be the best dancer out there, but something about his dance style has me constantly watching. I mean he is sex on a stick and sings like a dream ; )

@CANEPPATV He had less time to settle into the role than Radcliffe, and Radcliffe had voice lessons and dance lessons for a year before getting into the part, while Criss is used to an entirely different style of singing. I only saw Criss live, and his acting was more than passable,his vocal issues could be overlooked; it's just that his entire schedule; rehearsal, performances, andall, just seemed to be shoe-horned in a narrow window of time, while Daniel had months playing the part.

Having seen Radcliffe and then this video, I've got to say I really do think Radcliffe did a better job. I understand that Radcliffe had a lot more time in the role, but even still, Radcliffe's take on the role just felt better for the play.

What people don't realize is that this was one of his first performances. I went to one of his last shows and he did an amazing job! He was a little off in this song, but when I went his voice was flawless.
Plus, Daniel Radcliffe had more time to get into the swing of things, whereas Darren had two weeks of rehearsals and was only in the play for three weeks.
Overall, I think that Darren exquisite.

Im watchin darren and nick and daniel and to be honest....nick is best vocally he can dance to....i think daniel dance to... i think they are all super talented tho. Darren voice is kinda gettin lost in all of it. Im very proud of nick tho...he has never been comfortable dancing haha. but darren was great too. I cant wait to go see this show

I really like Darren, the problem that I have, is that it sounds too trained, I preferred Darren's Starkid performance where his voice was raw and pure. Daniel's performance was outstanding and reaches the higher notes easier than Darren does which is surprising as Darren's a counter tenor....

I saw this on the 20th and Darren was very good, the best and most charismatic performer in the show in spite of some occasional softness in volume. Speaking as someone who's been going to Bway for the last 30 years, he's got great raw stage abilities - plenty of talent, energy and genuine charm. He's no David Morse but neither is ANYONE else, and this production is rather flatly earnest than dry, zany or satiric, and that was the director's choice. Great bit: Darren imitating Wally Womper.

Very weak singing and he just didn't capture the character. Robert Morse originated the role on Broadway and starred in the movie, see youtubes of his performance in the movie- fantastic, funny and just fun! This is not even close. Even the choreography here seems off, it's not funny like the movie choreography.

Being a fan of Darren for many years now I am incredibly impressed with how well he blended onto the Broadway stage. He really knows what he's doing of course there's always room from improvement but for two weeks of rehearsal he did fantastic! I think he really knows how to put on a good show!

So proud of Darren and how far he has come since playing Harry Freaking Potter in AVPM. I love how he still tries to be a part of Starkid despite his uber busy Glee schedual. So wishing I lived in NY so I could have seen Darren in this. Considering his short rehearsal time Darren gives such a great performance and you can hear the audience loves him!

i noticed a change in choreography. when danielle whent on the table he would be flung from side to side by actors on either side of him as they where doing with the woman, however, darren is alot taller then daniell so he kinda did his own little thing by himself. lol

He sings the song too much like he is in choir, and less like a showtune. I was expecting way better from what I saw of him in AVPM. Also, his dancing sucks ass for such great choreography. I wish they would put someone who deserves the part in this show because it really is spectacular and deserves better.

Look at all those dance moves, the stage actions AND not to mention the words he had to learn. Darren can barely ever remember the words to his own songs, and considering he only had 2 weeks to learn it all. I think he did a pretty awesome job, so proud of Darren.

I saw this in August, when Daniel was still Finch, and I must say that Darren really does the part justice. For all of you saying that it doesn't sound that good, 1) it isn't a professional recording. you're not allowed to record/take pictures, so this person was probably trying not to get caught and it messed with the sound quality, 2) Darren has always had a more pop voice. We all know this. Still love him no matter what (:!

Ok I am a die hard starkid and I love Darren but this isn't that great:/ Obviously I can't judge how good he is at this part just by a YouTube video. I know he isn't trained for musical theatre but I really hope he got better over the different show because he seemed to be struggling a few times...

@lifeisastage1 You can't judge anything by a bootleg video, that is not what they are for. You'd need a professional recording to get a real feeling of how he sounds and even then it is not the same as being in the theatre.
