how much binder and how did you granulate? ive fired 3 inch with 3-5 mm corned bp no binder, sorted by hand before i had suitable screens it was still burning after the shell came out. was this bjv's silver streamer stars, lovely looking shell : )
The problem is not the size of the granulation. The BP is just to slow. mill it longer or use softwood charcoal. You can use 10mm granules to lift shells or 2mm granules. Both will work with good blackpowder. ;)
Damn that sucks-.- I let mine dry for 1 day in the sun or 100°C in the oven. Pre heat to 100°, shut the power off and then put your bp in. stir it every 20min and it will dry really fast.
@pyrochemieNET not true. small shells require smaller granulation than larger shells even sub standard bp can be used if the granulation is smaller than normal for the bore, this was 5mm granules the powder was not consumed fast enough to be used effectively
my bp is willow it is fast, no problem getting them up i use 8% b/w but too large and it is not used by the time the shell leaves the mortar this size lift is suited to a higher volume mortar or a tighter fitting shell for more pressure
I don't know about the BJV streamer, but here's the formula:
KClO3 - 50
Bright Al - 20,8
KNO3 - 8,3
Al variations** - 8,3
Dextrin - 8,3
Red gum (I think it can be substituted with phenolic resin) - 4,3
** Al variations mean different Al particle sizes - my favourite combo is 30% Al 15-30 mesh flake flitter, 30% atomized Al, 30% of my homemade flake 30-175 mesh and 10% 20-175 mesh MgAl.
The formula needs wheat paste to bind, otherwise it doesn't hold well.
very nice shell, next time some harder break, use a booster like some slow flash coated over the rice hulls or 2gr 7:3 in the middle. When its possible please give me the formula-> PM.
the problem is not the granulation , a 5 mm bp is stronger than 2 mm , it's your lift , it's not fast

Wrong - the bigger the granules, the slower the burning.

@pyrochemieNET
I'm an idiot, I found out my black powder wasn't completely dried.
Safety remark to all - don't be fooled when BP looks and feels dry, let it dry more than needed.
