You can find their Debut Album on iTunes. You won't regret it!
I hate when people give thumbs down to insightful comments. I totally agree and although I love DT and MV, I think they could both benefit from better singers. Drumming is top-notch, though ;-)
yes. thank u. james labrie is a good singer. a much much better choice than dominici. but im sad to say he was at his best before the food poisoning incident. granted he does has very good moments and performances still. like the score dvd. i think they could maybe benefit from a better singer. both this band and dream theater have very very good musicians though.
Being human is trial and error, everyone on this planet makes mistakes regardless of what propaganda tells you, regardless of what religion tells you. So instead of being a critic, take a step back and appreciate this dudes voice for what it is, a masterful work of art, and a spectacular addition to music.
Cedric's a really talented singer. He has a somewhat limited range, not a huge reserve of power and an annoying tendency to hit the pitches a bit flat sometimes, but all things considered he's pretty fantastic, and this performance in particular is a great job on his part.
@obdandzigzag If he cant sing this song for real, then dont write it with such high vocals. He sounds fucking awful. This is why he rarely sings high on Octahedron. He's getting older now, mid-30s I think, it just gets harder to sing high as you get older.
Cedric treats his voice like another instrument which rules so much in this band because it just goes to show you that vocals truly aren't everything sometimes.
Yeah If you think it's pitch shifted you were obviously dropped when you were a baby. All the typical effects you would expect a professional mixer to use, no "Pitch Shifting" or "Auto tune" here fools.
dude i went to their concerts and i saw all their equipment, sound board, audio programs the works. I love Mars volta as much as the next guy but they definitely fuck with his voice live too.
well, if by "fuck with his voice" you mean "add chorus, delay, reverb, occasionally phaser, flanger and ring modulation to his voice," then you would be correct. BUT, those do not shift the pitch of his voice. You can tell it's his real voice because of the honest mistakes he makes, which are an okay thing, since he's a human being too.

The fourteen second pause during the beginning was kinda lame considering there was no more than two consecutive seconds of silence and not a single word spoken by the band last time I saw them.
more....so yeah... i dont like a lot of other culture's music..i hate country and rap .. i'd rather listen to rap but i give country a lot more respect though because rap takes no talent.. so i stick to classic rock and metal.. and once in awhile the occasional in my eyes "good" guitar riff in some new songs now a-days..
remember.. im 14 .. one of the few now that tries to keep that music alive.
When I said "cultures" I was implying traditional music from other countries, perhaps in their native language. I'm not arguing against Led Zeppelin being a good band (even though they have been accused of stealing some of their material from blues guitarists), just that there is a whole musical world out there for you to discover. You shouldn't limit yourself to a single genre. The Mars Volta has built up a very solid fanbase over the years that include Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.
i dont understand much other language.. just some spanish.... and zeppelin only stole a few bass lines but completely changed everything else. dazed and confused... u forget.. page also wrote MANY other riffs for other bands including the rolling stones while he was a session artist.. they also wrote MANY other GREAT songs by themselves
You don't have to understand the language to appreciate the music and the talent musicians around the world have. Not knowing what the vocalist is saying doesn't prevent you from hearing their tone, the mood they're trying to set, or the feeling that comes from their words. Not understanding the language can almost be an advantage as it allows you to focus less on words and more on the music itself.
Because you can't truly appreciate a band and its music until you know what they're saying? chill bro. I'm more interested in the passion and expression that they bring out in singing and playing. And that is mostly done through tone.
i've never even heard of this bad until a guitar center catalog had a biography of thomas the drummer...i dont think they'll have that big of an impact when they're done.

There is way more good music available other than classic rock, that includes artists from different genres, cultures, and languages (past and present). Echoplex - Great
Amsterdam - Great
Milan - Great
Berlin - Great
Dallas - Great
St. Louis - Great
I've just listed a few shows from this tour. Look into them.
Have to say - LOVE mars volta - Thats said, they kinda suck live. I saw them in miami a few weeks ago and they are definitely a better studio band than live. Thomas saved/made the performance entirely.
I've seen them a few times live, most recently a few weeks ago, and they are definitely one of the best live bands around. If you aren't a fan of a chaotic live show (their punk rock influence/background) then you will never be a fan of their live shows...because they don't stand around and focus on perfection. Imperfections are what make a live show memorable and truly great. If you want lifeless perfection then you're better off attending a Dream Theater concert.
Haha, it's funny cause it's really true. Both great bands but the Volta definitely brings more energy to their shows (about a million times more). I saw them live and loved it, they put on the best concert I've ever been too. Sadly I think it could have been better in a different venue with better acoustics, it was at times really difficult to make anything out at all. Not "chaotic" just muddy. Still knowing every song by heart probably helped me figure out what was going most of the time.
I love how in every Mars Volta thread I read on here, the fans have real discussions, not just the same old "they rock","they suck","you're a fag" etc...That says something positive about their fanbase.
I just cant bring myself to like prig and the new mars volta, I like a few songs off goliath, but some parts seem just a bit to avant garde for me... which is odd, beacause I love that stuff. I tried to keep an open mind with prig but I saw them live and it was not so great, it was all real sped up and most of the music was inaudible compared to pridgen's wailing crash cymbals, plus I hate the sound of his bass drum, hes got that whole joey jordinson click thing going on. yuck.
Thomas Pridgen is an AMAZING drummer! It's hard to believe that anyone can keep the tempo perfectly without a metronome but if he can, that's fucking insane.
Thomas has impeccable rhythm. i recorded him when we were at Berklee together and he would call a tempo then play it without a metronome. this dude has such control that you probably just can't keep up.
i didnt mean theore sucks, or even that he isnt mind bogglingingly good, all i said was that comparatively, pridgen has a more original, abstract style. Theodore was absolutely amazing, but as TMV is becoming more progressive and experimental than ever before, pridgen is a better match for their sound. and yes, theodore does play more like one would in a regular band(coventional), but TMV so out there now, that his style of drumming just wouldn't work as perfectly as Pridgens
ya. i actually just saw them live and i was so surprised. cedric hit every thing perfect and had ridiculous tonal quality. for some reason shitty mics kill his voice more than the other instruments. but honeslty live instruments sound so amazing as well. recordings really ruin everything.
its nice to come to a video were finaly, everyone seems to think the same way i do, that pridgen is better than theodore. Theodore was far more conventional and limited.
About the singing, its impossible to capture his voice, for real. Ive been to 3 TMV shows, and his voice was just fantastic, and ive seen many many videos here on youtube(some from the same concerts, such as the UCI concert two weeks ago) even on professional quality cameras, and it SIGNIFIGANTLY downplays his voice
no the audio is horribly done, if you seen the dvd that comes with their new cd, you would see that it does sound good live. Plus ive seen them live and they are amazing Omar and Pridgen are machines they never get tired
Cedric's live voice is a lot different than what goes on the cds. His voice is still powerful but not exactly pleasant but the musics not about that eh?
And now I know why I had trouble following the drumming on "Bedlam." O geez.
I saw them at Soma for their album release show and their drummer had about a 5 minute solo..he's fucking insane I don't tihnk he ever stopped once during the 2-3 hour show...
and this CD is amazing the on;y thing that could be considered to be a downside or flaw is the lack of buildup to stuff...gone is the slow wind downs and build ups..something that was sucha big thing in Ampethechure
I absolutly love this band!!! All their records have completly blown me away. And dont get me wrong, I love Jon Theadore but Thomas Pridgen is the shit!!!
I don't know that I've ever heard or seen a drummer with more energy as Pridgen. Theodore was a really good drummer but this guy belongs in this band for sure.
whoever hates on this album is completely retarted. this album begs sooo many questions to be answered! deloused or this one? jon theadore or this guy thomas pridgen? and tons more! it makes me proud to be a mars volta fan alllll over again
cedric and omar on several occasions have expressed their constantly evolving tastes and ambitions in music. pridgen will fit in quite nicely and will influence greatly on the musical output until cedric and omar gets bored and finds another drummer. as far as im concerned, i have the first half of 'bedlam' on repeat because its so freakin awesome. ill get to the second half one of these days.
I don't think it's about who uses double pedals or who is more technical, what it comes down 2is the Music. It's also about makin' the artist feel comfortable bout doin what he or she is doin, so what ever thomas is doin fits for the music, and what ever Jon did fit for the music at that time. But keep in mind, none of us are paying thomas so maybe when we get enuf musical vocab, or money then we can give input, but 4me...have a coke an a smile, kick back, an enjoy what u wish u could do. I am
I just find Thomas' drumming incredibly boring and unoriginal, despite being technically accomplished as he clearly is. Haven't bought the album yet, but if this is how he plays on every track then I'll find it hard to sit through it all. Plus the ending on this was awful. Theodore knew when to use doubles on the bass drum; Pridgen doesn't know when to stop.
Loved TMV ever since Tremulant. EP was great, De-Loused was good, real refreshing given the time, Frances untopable, Amputecture was good but my least fav, seems kinda thrown together, maybe cuz de loused and frances had a central theme, so was really worried about this release esp. since jon is gone. They delivered, possibly my new fav.

Thomas Pridgen...talk about overplaying. He's got talent...but he'll mature and stop overplaying. The overdone fills at the start of the song are really unnecessary.
although, it is mars volta so everything's gotta bet over the top.
Thomas is much better than buddy rich, but buddy still gets respect for being innovative and influential for the time.
age has nothing to do with this.
personally, i like thomas pridgen more than billy cobham. his fills are more musical rather than lightning fast. but the real question is, without billy cobham, would there be a pridgen or even theodore?
way better than buddy rich dude. Buddy rich couldn't play any of this shit. what do you think no one will ever play better than him its been like fifty years, of course there are better drummers out there
From a purely technical standpoint-NO He is NOT better than buddy rich. You're right, buddy rich probably couldn't play this because you know why? He(probably) wouldn't want to!And same goes for T.P.He probably wouldn't want to play "west side story", regarded as one of the most difficult pieces of contemporary music to pull off in ANY genre(aside from classical)EVER!!Listen dude, mars volta is great.T.P is great. But technically and musically B.R owns.Let's stop the argument. And just enjoy music!
I think you are just over assessing. You don't look at a mediocre drummer and point out the lack of variation in their styles. Don't forget most of Theodore's fills were single stroke rolls...
Hey, this is impressive. Great cohesion between the musicians. The Bass and Drums are as one. Cedric's got one of the greatest voices in Rock today. And Omar's Guitar is spectacular. Good sound for a live recording, too. (BTW, Pridgen's a great addition to the band. Enough with the neophobia.)
The guitar Omar is using in this clip is an left handed Ibanez jetking II with a single Seymour Duncan JB JR pickup in the bridge position and a Ibanez artist neck, that's why the head stock is different, also the black body and purple tortoise pick guard isn't a stock standard thing either.
That intro fuckin goes...

Thomas is one of my new favorite drummers!
casey62865 3 years ago 2
Thomas has impeccable rhythm. i recorded him when we were at Berklee together and he would call a tempo then play it without a metronome. this dude has such control that you probably just can't keep up.
TTwigmoney 3 years ago
i love how people say pridgen can't hold a beat, listen to these tracks, these beats are hard as hell in some spots, and he doesn't miss one note.

snoman2204 3 years ago
i love the whole "four way co-ordination" both the mars volta drummers had going on.
both could be playing a complex triplet pattern with snare and bass, while still keeping a 4/4 timing on the hi hat pedal. i LOVE it.

what a shame rival gang members of thomas want to kill him. he shouldn't have gotten himself into that mess.

TargetBomber 3 years ago
what are you talking about sir?
grawny 3 years ago 2
i didnt mean theore sucks, or even that he isnt mind bogglingingly good, all i said was that comparatively, pridgen has a more original, abstract style. Theodore was absolutely amazing, but as TMV is becoming more progressive and experimental than ever before, pridgen is a better match for their sound. and yes, theodore does play more like one would in a regular band(coventional), but TMV so out there now, that his style of drumming just wouldn't work as perfectly as Pridgens
jewgler 4 years ago
ya. i actually just saw them live and i was so surprised. cedric hit every thing perfect and had ridiculous tonal quality. for some reason shitty mics kill his voice more than the other instruments. but honeslty live instruments sound so amazing as well. recordings really ruin everything.
smokeyandcraig 4 years ago
its nice to come to a video were finaly, everyone seems to think the same way i do, that pridgen is better than theodore.

StrikerJme 4 years ago
Cedric's live voice is a lot different than what goes on the cds. His voice is still powerful but not exactly pleasant but the musics not about that eh?
And now I know why I had trouble following the drumming on "Bedlam." O geez.

I saw them at Soma for their album release show and their drummer had about a 5 minute solo..he's fucking insane I don't tihnk he ever stopped once during the 2-3 hour show...
and this CD is amazing the on;y thing that could be considered to be a downside or flaw is the lack of buildup to stuff...gone is the slow wind downs and build ups..something that was sucha big thing in Ampethechure
ramonisdumb 4 years ago

whoever hates on this album is completely retarted. this album begs sooo many questions to be answered! deloused or this one? jon theadore or this guy thomas pridgen? and tons more! it makes me proud to be a mars volta fan alllll over again
shoeshifter 4 years ago
cedric and omar on several occasions have expressed their constantly evolving tastes and ambitions in music. pridgen will fit in quite nicely and will influence greatly on the musical output until cedric and omar gets bored and finds another drummer. as far as im concerned, i have the first half of 'bedlam' on repeat because its so freakin awesome. ill get to the second half one of these days.
nnfiction 4 years ago
I don't think it's about who uses double pedals or who is more technical, what it comes down 2is the Music. It's also about makin' the artist feel comfortable bout doin what he or she is doin, so what ever thomas is doin fits for the music, and what ever Jon did fit for the music at that time. But keep in mind, none of us are paying thomas so maybe when we get enuf musical vocab, or money then we can give input, but 4me...have a coke an a smile, kick back, an enjoy what u wish u could do. I am
ntrakit6 4 years ago

The overdone fills at the start of the song are really unnecessary.
although, it is mars volta so everything's gotta bet over the top.

the 2 front cymbals Thomas are using, sounds like a 19' a custom to the right, and the one 2 the left is the 21' Armand zildjian ride

i used to think buddy rich was the best, but now i question
erectedweiner21 4 years ago
Best is a matter of opinion. This guy's great. But a better than buddy rich?
No.Not hardly.He's still young.
Sound's like he's doing his best billy cobham on this, who Mr.pridgen just can't mess with. But yeah he's great.
misterpoopypants29 4 years ago
Thomas is much better than buddy rich, but buddy still gets respect for being innovative and influential for the time.
age has nothing to do with this.
personally, i like thomas pridgen more than billy cobham. his fills are more musical rather than lightning fast. but the real question is, without billy cobham, would there be a pridgen or even theodore?
supinator 4 years ago
way better than buddy rich dude. Buddy rich couldn't play any of this shit. what do you think no one will ever play better than him its been like fifty years, of course there are better drummers out there
pearldrums91 4 years ago
From a purely technical standpoint-NO He is NOT better than buddy rich. You're right, buddy rich probably couldn't play this because you know why? He(probably) wouldn't want to!And same goes for T.P.He probably wouldn't want to play "west side story", regarded as one of the most difficult pieces of contemporary music to pull off in ANY genre(aside from classical)EVER!!Listen dude, mars volta is great.T.P is great. But technically and musically B.R owns.Let's stop the argument. And just enjoy music!
Themdm29 4 years ago 3

except he plays the same fuckin thing all the time whether in songs or solos
-stick clicking solo
-sub-par rim and snare work with some tom
-wiping forehand while playing jazz beat
iheartmom 3 years ago
