I've never been a huge fan of her Rose's turn, but someone posted her entire performance up here a few years back and I watched it and fell in love with it. It's not great when you isolate it scene by scene, but as a whole, you can really see what she did with the character. She was warm, funny, scary, and heartbreaking. I wish whoever it was that posted the show would re-post for everyone to see. It was phenomenal!
Tyne Daly is honestly my least favorite Rose...everything about her performance rubs me the wrong way.
Her lack of stage presence (she just doesn't command the stage the way Rose needs to), her delivery, her gestures and her overall persona just don't work for me (her 'singing' doesn't do her any favors either).
@boynamedalexxx The idea of her characterization is a good one, as she does somewhat embody a Rose that would live near the railroad tracks, but she just doesn't cut it. I never feel her performance, not for a second.
Midler looks good by comparison (and she was horribly over the top in the film...)
I understand that a lot of people like Daly in the role (heck, she, somehow, won a Tony for it), but I just can't bring myself to enjoy this Rose.
Neither do I. What is that perpindicular bisector thing she does with her arms every once in a while ( :23, 1:06 )? Very odd choice. Definitely not my favorite, but still entertaining
Haaaa the "perpendicular bisector thing"? Hysterical!
At first, I didn't like Tyne at all because I thought that this wasn't enough of a "dramatic delivery." Now, I think she's great in her own way: A selfish stage mother, tough as nails. She sells that image better than Merman, who merely illustrated and indicated emotion.
She doesn't seem hurt and bitter enough. This whole song is about Rose confronting who she really is, and it seems more like this is Rose goofing around.
It's an interesting take but I don't think it's what Styne and Sondheim had in mind when they wrote it.
love her as an actress, love patti more...weren't you scared &^%$less that she'd stop the show and yell at you like patti did when somebody had a camera in the theater? your'e brave!
i saw her do this on broadway, my fav show, thot she was amazing !

I think Tyne Daly delivers a very respectable, polished and palatteable delivery as Madam Rose.

I was lucky enough to have seen Tyne as Mama Rose. She was wonderful. She gave her character a true humanity-both the good and bad of it .
