  • @dustbowel20 Hey Roger;

    They work very well and are an excellent product for renos.

    Any questions....drop me a line and I will help as much as I can.

    Thanks for commenting and all the best in 2012!!! Al

  • I'm going to be replacing a shower that drains into cast iron piping. I want to use a PVC drain for the new shower and connect it to the existing cast iron system. Is this the type of product I would use? Thanks!

  • @brewcabbage Hello there;

    A fernco coupling or an MJ coupling will work as well. I have used both although I prefer a fernco. This will do exactly what you are looking to do on your installation. Excellent product!

    Thanks for commenting and Happy New Year!!! Al

  • How durable are those fittings for underground permanent applications for main sewer lines ? Are the seals tight enough to prevent tree roots from coming in ? Will the clamps rust overtime ?

  • @Dicofole Hello;

    These fittings have been around for sometime now. The clamps are stainless steel and the rubber is a neoprene. Excellent product. As far as roots go;you should have no trouble especially if the clamps are tight and the pipe is well supported underneath. You could also look at MJ Couplings as well for underground that have a stainless steel band that covers the entire coupling. I have used 100's of them underground.

    Hope this helps! Tks for commenting! Al

  • nice

  • By the way...I replaced a 4" underground pipe to a 4x3 wye with a 4" slip fernco....man it was on tough sob to get it to fit right. You have any suggestions so i dont have to use wd and a screw driver?

  • @chaotic719playa Hello Patricio;You actually should use 2 ferncos if you are replacing or installing a fitting or changing a piece of pipe underground as you have no movement in any direction for the pipe to move. If you cut out that section, place a fernco on either end, drop your fitting with a piece of pipe glued in either end and then drop it in place and slide your ferncos over the new pipe. Thanks for commenting and have a great day!!! Al

  • @TheOldkid888 I appreciate the info and will keep that in mind next time Al...Have a great one too! Patrick

  • I use wd-40 cuz i never have soap on hand lol great video again! Glad to know you still teaching

  • Great video. I was wondering if these couplings can be painted?

  • @sundaybighouse Hello there; I know they can be painted for sure, but if there is a lot of expansion and contraction the paint will crack. If you intend on painting them I would use an oil base paint diluted with varisol and you should not have any problems. Thanks for commenting and have a grand day!!! Al

  • @TheOldkid888 Thank you for the reply, much appreciated.

  • @TheOldkid888 Hi again, I used one of these to fix my soil stack and it's working very well. I now have a similar problem with my bathroom sink waste. The gap between the 2 copper pipes is 8cm(around 3 inches) with 30mm (about 1inch and 1/5) internal diameter pipes. Is there a suitable coupling for this?

    Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • @sundaybighouse Hello there; Fernco couplings are made in many different sizes. the smallest being 1 1/4". It actually fits snug on a piece of 1 1/2" copper pipe. It sounds to me that you could use 2 trap adaptors and glue a short piece of plastic pipe between the 2 adaptors. The trap adaptors just have to be tightened once you have your piece is glued in place. I will in box you with a video of the adaptors that i made. Thanks for commenting! Al

  • @TheOldkid888 Believe it or not, I went to my local plumbing merchants and they told me exactly what you said. The 11/4" was 3 inches long, it was just a tad too short so I bought two and a piece of 30mm solvent-weld waste pipe. The only thing is I didn't use glue. Thanks I would like to see the video to see if I've done it correctly or not.

  • @sundaybighouse hello there; You don't need to glue these fernco couplings; just a simple tightening with a screw driver or nut driver will be suffice. In the message I sent you that was in regards to using 2-1 1/4 trap adaptors and a small piece of pipe. You should be all set now. Thanks for commenting, good luck with the project and have a great day!!! Al

  • @TheOldkid888 Ah sorry I misread it, I understand now. Thanks again.

  • I wish they came in white as well though! All my guttering is all white pvc.

  • great video thank you

  • White PVC requires both primer and glue as well; where ABS can be put together with glue only.White PVC is also made for waterlines and comes in both threaded and glued fittings.Fernco couplings are strictly used for drainage systems only.Thanks for your comment and have a great day.

  • The black pipe in this video is actually called ABS.Where I live white pvc is not used for drainage inside homes.Grey PVC is used in apartment buildings and commercial applications.ABS is strictly used in homes because of the fire rating where as grey PVC has a much better fire rating.White PVC pipe is used in other parts of the country.White PVC pipe is used to run sewer mains into homes underground and is called SDR28;has a very thin wall thickness.A sleeve adaptor converts it to ABS inside.

  • what is the differance of using black pvc and white pvc?

  • oky thank you

  • Another way to reduce down in size from 3" to 1/2" is to use a 3" by 1 1/2" fernco reducing coupling and a 11/2' by 1/2" abs reducer.It comes in a 1/2" barbed or 1/2" female end;so it is just a matter of sliding the 11/2" end into the reducing coupling and tightening the clamp.Good luck and I hope that helped.

  • 1/2 " to 3" is quite a difference in pipe size.You can use a 3 by 11/2 reducing coupling, then use 11/2 by 11/4. You are going to need a dishwasher connection that will bring you down to 1/2".You will need a piece of pipe between the 2 couplings.One piece of 11/2 pipe for the first coupling and a piece of 11/4 for the second coupling to the dishwasher coupling that has 4 different sizes on it as it reduces down to 1/2 inch.Check at the store to see if it can reduce any easier.I don't think so.GL

  • hi i would like to join a 1/2'' pipe to 3'' pipe can help me plz can it be done with couplings good work. thank you
