There were all kinds of ways of doing colour animation in 1935 I believe, even if they were probably crude. However, from what I hear the answer is that he hand-painted the film. And that means exactly what it sounds like - he took a small brush or something similar and painted the film frame by frame. It's no wonder it can be jittery at times. :)
@publismanlio Nah colour film was common by the 1930s, and there were several colour films in the 20s. A Star is Born is the first colour film to be nominated for an Oscar.

I had to look this up. The music sounds like late 50's. Not a spectacular film but I always thought 'A Star Is Born" (1937) was the first color film.
