  • I needed my glasses to watch this, it literally strained my eyes!

  • woo hoo, art, cigs

  • The animation makes me think of Animal Collective.

  • SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES!

  • how exactly did this guy make a color animation in 1935?

  • @BunnaySango

There were all kinds of ways of doing colour animation in 1935 I believe, even if they were probably crude. However, from what I hear the answer is that he hand-painted the film. And that means exactly what it sounds like - he took a small brush or something similar and painted the film frame by frame. It's no wonder it can be jittery at times. :)

  • CooLnesS.

  • I had to look this up. The music sounds like late 50's. Not a spectacular film but I always thought 'A Star Is Born" (1937) was the first color film.

  • @publismanlio Nah colour film was common by the 1930s, and there were several colour films in the 20s. A Star is Born is the first colour film to be nominated for an Oscar.

  • Yeah, the concept used to be the art first, crass commercialism later... How we have progressed...

  • Unbelievably amazing!

  • Amazing that a cigarette maker would sponsor something like this...the ad flashes a few times in the last third of the reel.

  • @RatPfink66 I think he took used film and scratched onto it. Another one of his works is on an old Post Office Training Film.

  • Thanks for putting this up. It's fantastic!
