GW2 will have better of both.

@MrRakah Why would I spend my time explaining GW's mechanics to a WoW fanboy who hates Guild Wars, no matter what. Besides, you wouldn't understand it. Just watch the video, it'll explain at least something though it's not a gameplay video (it's an observe mode). You'll see that the spikes kill the target in about half a second, and the monks will have to protect him before he dies. Basically the protection monk has to predict who they will spike and protect him in advance to counter the spike.
@MrRakah When I watch WoW PvP videos, all I see is some 1 vs. 1 fights where they're taking turns beating each other. The only thing you'll have to pay attention to is spamming skills on your target. It requires no skill.
@Precedentxx Eotn is the newest but is an expansion pack what means you need another campaign to have it. Prophecies, Nightfall and Factions are those campaigns. I recommend you to have factions, because it includes competitive missions wich are fun, and if you want another campaign you can buy nightfall, wich brings lots of fun too, Prophecies isn't that fun and has less professions Nightfall and Factions, wich both brings 2 professions each.
Im SIKED for guild wars 2. Played GW1 since it was released in 2005 and loved its close knit community. I hope it doesnt get too mainstream like wow and swtor. I mainly pvped and could name nearly every person in the heroes ascent. good times

damn i remember when Virtual Dragons and Rebels Rising dominated the GvG scene. where there was only the original GANK-Kamikaze Tactics guild and Lazy the biggest PvE alliance was. good times. best game ever played. i hope GW2 can at least reach the bar this awesome game set.
@me4ever15 Guild Wars 2 will be different. Most of the tactics played in Gw1 will not be playable in GW2. This can be seen as good or as bad. But I have honestly no idea how GvG will look like without any healing profession. Anyway, I´m not quite sure if I´m going to play GW2 since there is too much stuff that is annoing in my opinion. But it is always a question of preference i guess.

I forgot the name since I do not play active anymore but I think you know what i mean. You were fighting with more then 5 people there but this "capture and hold" system was also realized in HA and HB. It does not replace GvG really well, thats what I think. But of course everyone has to choose on his own. Also the VoD System from before 2008
@DerTeke Yup, VoD was fantastic and i play always prot/infuse, so i'd like some support profession like monk in gw2. Oh, they are Alliance Battles, they are 12v12 but never nearly as interesting as GvG.
@sventato Alliance battles were absolutly boring. Anyway, without a REAL GvG as a tactical 6on6/5on5 or 8on8 arena system I will not play guild wars 2. Those so called "tactical" maps with capture the flag or king of the hill were boring as hell which is the reason that i never played HA a lot and even prefered the first 3 maps without the pseudo-tactics.
those squares only appear in observer mode. In game mode only damage numbers do. (unless they added an option to add those.) You have your damage squares on a side bar. The numbers pop up in most mmo games, or appear in chat (which i find more annoying for PUG PvP).
GW PvP is only long in high end matches, If you want short games join Random Arenas. GvG used to last much muuuuch longer, before the Guild Lords ran out.
@kyuhan5000 There are many forms of PvP in Guild Wars and this one usually takes the longest (up to 28 minutes). Heroes' Ascent can last quite long too, but Random Arenas matches usually last about 3 minutes or so. Trust me,the PvP is just awesome, though it will take a LOT of time to learn to play the game properly. And by the way,only the damage you do on enemies and the damage you take will pop up in-game. The "squares" are skill icons so you know what's hitting you.I hope you'll buy the game

It sure is. But you kinda need all of them (Prophecies, Factions, Nighftfall and Eye of the North) to make it count for gw2. In EotN you can fill in your Hall of Monuments and get nice bonusses for gw2 (see Hall of Monument Reward calculater on the gw2 site).
@damerli If you want to get some GW2 goodies, populating your Hall of Monuments will certainly help. However, that begs the question if it's worth it to you to do this in order to get some yet-undefined perks for the sequel.
@Feliexxxxxxxx Spacebar is the auto-attack key. You can customize controls though. and yes, skills can be cast by clicking it, but it's quite slow so just use keys 1-8. If your point is trying to ask if this game's too simple, it is not. This is propably one of the hardest games there is; I've played like 1600+ hours and still learning.

@Creznour Sure its that easy walk threw 8 players that Dont want their "NPC" to die. And then start killing their "NPC" when they attack you to try and stop you do nothing to defend your self and go right after their "NPC" yep.....
The info on wiki said rawr played a very defensive spike, now I am no expert but that seems pretty damn offensive to me, I didn't really realize how offensive. They use all the biggest damage dealing skills, eviscerate, and executioners axe were two I noticed on the axe, as opposed to dismember and Body Blow. And Burning arrow ranger? Defiantly the most damage a ranger can deal, as opposed to cripshot which would be a more defensive play style. So what do they mean by the phrase defensive spike?
@xMadSkillzx It's a defensive spike because they have very few dedicated offensive characters while the rest are supports with some low offensive power. Their Me/E only has 2 skills that do damage (with some burning), the Rit has 2 skills that do damage and a Rend, and the Rit Flag capper only has 2 skills that do damage, the rest of their bars are all support/utility. Combined with the two wars and BA Ranger, they can create a big spike of damage while being a brick wall.
It is easy to see from this why they in top 200 GvG guild nowadays means nothing :P I knew RAWR were good but WOW that is insane! It seems like they spike two targets almost simultaneously. On a side note Euros are Best! :P

@lonelyman467 you were probrably playing Rebel Rising and Friends. They are the version of [rawr] open to cape leechers. There probrably wasnt any real [rawr] players in there. Just cape leechers.
I don't understand, why doesnt half of the team go after the monks? Then go and rape the others... I noticed that most of the time the Monks weren't getting hurt back there, everyone was focused on the Warriors lol
@Xentric55 monks are the most watched and best protted targets. if u just try to slay them and afterwards the other team u will wipe as ur dmg is reduced substantially while hitting fullprotted monks (with def-stances on rawr) and the other team just has to spike ur wars or ur midline. if they get this (and they will cause u arent stop them from do so as ur hitting the monks) they won as u cant spike nor pressure.
@Xentric55 schlikbolt explained one part of it. The other part is that if you advance towards their monks, who ARE in the backline if they know what to do, your whole front and midline is gone. They are not protecting their own monks anymore, which means the other team can take them out. and while the team that would charge at the monks is doing that, the others are attacking. so as a rule of basis, people try to gain terrain before taking down monks, which is not that easy in the end ;)
@DoranDark no most people can understand this without having to GvG look at HA.. WoW is a different story but it is true that when you become a high level that's where you can actally GvG in good fights

I remember I bought this when it launched.. I only got to rank 5, but it was very fun. There was no tournaments back then, only GvG and HoH with people like ThePowerOfMyRangers (or something like that) owning it all.

@rsboomboom333 Just wait for Guild Wars 2. Starting at this point is really kind of pointless seeing as GW's prime is long over. But yes, Lvl cap is 20. There are also 3 expansions released which you should seriously consider if you start playing this game.
i used to play GW back when it was first released and i stopped playing after a couple of months to play WoW. Gotta say, dumbest decision of my life, i want to make a return to GW now to play a REAL game. There are so many more perks in playing GW over WoW anyday especially in the subject of PvP.

It's 8 players vs 8 players and you have 100+ skills before the game starts to pick 8 from. The object is to kill their guild lord while maintaining position and flags on the map. That gives you 64 skills vs 64 skills. I don't see why you would need anymore when you understand the object of the game. Other games; Dota, CS, SC:BW, etc. have less. Real sports, get a ball + body + 1item.

@CoolMcCully high level PvP means GvG and HA, TA and RA don't count I'm sorry. Although last I played, HA was going down the drain. What you just described is Random or Team Arenas PvP. The Spike metagame was a lot more intricate and so was the Balanced team (3 monk backline, rit or ele flagrunner, ele or mes hard rezzers, etc). You've missed the peak of Guildwars PvP my good sir

2nd. the pvp feels to be endless! omg i would fall asleep... damn, looks fun tho but takes too much time.

@Alexon88 Oh no, I believe you misunderstand. The game itself doesn't go slow-motion, it's just what I did with the video editing.
Yes, if the game constantly slow-motioned it would probably get pretty obnoxious lol

It sure is. But you kinda need all of them (Prophecies, Factions, Nighftfall and Eye of the North) to make it count for gw2. In EotN you can fill in your Hall of Monuments and get nice bonusses for gw2 (see Hall of Monument Reward calculater on the gw2 site).

@Feliexxxxxxxx Spacebar is the auto-attack key. You can customize controls though. and yes, skills can be cast by clicking it, but it's quite slow so just use keys 1-8. If your point is trying to ask if this game's too simple, it is not. This is propably one of the hardest games there is; I've played like 1600+ hours and still learning.

The info on wiki said rawr played a very defensive spike, now I am no expert but that seems pretty damn offensive to me, I didn't really realize how offensive. They use all the biggest damage dealing skills, eviscerate, and executioners axe were two I noticed on the axe, as opposed to dismember and Body Blow. And Burning arrow ranger? Defiantly the most damage a ranger can deal, as opposed to cripshot which would be a more defensive play style. So what do they mean by the phrase defensive spike?

@xMadSkillzx It's a defensive spike because they have very few dedicated offensive characters while the rest are supports with some low offensive power. Their Me/E only has 2 skills that do damage (with some burning), the Rit has 2 skills that do damage and a Rend, and the Rit Flag capper only has 2 skills that do damage, the rest of their bars are all support/utility. Combined with the two wars and BA Ranger, they can create a big spike of damage while being a brick wall.

It is easy to see from this why they in top 200 GvG guild nowadays means nothing :P I knew RAWR were good but WOW that is insane! It seems like they spike two targets almost simultaneously. On a side note Euros are Best! :P

I don't understand, why doesnt half of the team go after the monks? Then go and rape the others... I noticed that most of the time the Monks weren't getting hurt back there, everyone was focused on the Warriors lol

@Xentric55 monks are the most watched and best protted targets. if u just try to slay them and afterwards the other team u will wipe as ur dmg is reduced substantially while hitting fullprotted monks (with def-stances on rawr) and the other team just has to spike ur wars or ur midline. if they get this (and they will cause u arent stop them from do so as ur hitting the monks) they won as u cant spike nor pressure.

@Xentric55 schlikbolt explained one part of it. The other part is that if you advance towards their monks, who ARE in the backline if they know what to do, your whole front and midline is gone. They are not protecting their own monks anymore, which means the other team can take them out. and while the team that would charge at the monks is doing that, the others are attacking. so as a rule of basis, people try to gain terrain before taking down monks, which is not that easy in the end ;)

I remember I bought this when it launched.. I only got to rank 5, but it was very fun. There was no tournaments back then, only GvG and HoH with people like ThePowerOfMyRangers (or something like that) owning it all.
good ol' days.. too bad it took like an hour just to get a team to do HoH, too much waste of time.

@rsboomboom333 Just wait for Guild Wars 2. Starting at this point is really kind of pointless seeing as GW's prime is long over. But yes, Lvl cap is 20. There are also 3 expansions released which you should seriously consider if you start playing this game.

i used to play GW back when it was first released and i stopped playing after a couple of months to play WoW. Gotta say, dumbest decision of my life, i want to make a return to GW now to play a REAL game. There are so many more perks in playing GW over WoW anyday especially in the subject of PvP.

@kkev1n Actually I'm afraid you do not understand, the game doesn't make complexities; in-fact GW PvP is incredibly basic, It's the players which create dominate tactic over the opposition. And unfortunately people tend to approach games which try to make PVP seem complex like WoW when infact they're less than acceptable and need balancing, which of course IZZY the [rawr] pig has never officially done so.

@CoolMcCully All your comment shows is that you have a basic understanding in both language and the game itself. It's 8 players vs 8 players and you have 100+ skills before the game starts to pick 8 from. The object is to kill their guild lord while maintaining position and flags on the map. That gives you 64 skills vs 64 skills. I don't see why you would need anymore when you understand the object of the game. Other games; Dota, CS, SC:BW, etc. have less. Real sports, get a ball + body + 1item.

@CoolMcCully Not basic at all. Obviously you haven't played high level PvP in this game. Building a team build and executing the necessary tasks are a lot harder than what you just pointed out. I haven't played in a long time but Guildwars PvP is definitely a highly complex and unique experience.

@CoolMcCully high level PvP means GvG and HA, TA and RA don't count I'm sorry. Although last I played, HA was going down the drain. What you just described is Random or Team Arenas PvP. The Spike metagame was a lot more intricate and so was the Balanced team (3 monk backline, rit or ele flagrunner, ele or mes hard rezzers, etc). You've missed the peak of Guildwars PvP my good sir
